I'm getting a Card Whiz! Post #14 in topic

Posted over 10 years ago by Rat_Tomago – in EM Pinball Hangout ‐ Last reply over 10 years ago

If you do a search on MSN for images of Royal Flush / Card Whiz you will see most without and some with the sticker. My only consensus on that is that they ran out of the doors they were using and ended up using different doors with that circle on the front (right around the time Columbia Pictures bought them out in 1977) They made like 15,500 of these machines and I am guessing they were in production from May of 1976 and then most likely well into 1977.

You should play more competitive pinball. Nah, he should do what makes him happy, and so should you. It's great that you like competitive pinball and EMs. It's fine that he doesn't. I love my Card Whiz EM, and it isn't because it's a good competitive game. It's because I find it fun to play, especially when I want to relax. When I want to read about MMr, I come here. When I want to read debates about whether EMs are fun, I go elsewhere. :stop:

Putting too much emphasis on your score can keep you from having fun, and it can cause you to play poorly. Start forcing shots, and most games will punish you. I'm guilty of this myself. Having a game that is low stress also helps in times when you feel like nothing is going right. For me that game is Card Whiz. Even though it is difficult, the slower pace has a calming effect. You will get better. You will have ups and downs. Just try to roll with it.

Posted over 11 years ago by herg – in All Pinball ‐ Last reply over 11 years ago

The #1 thing to understand about rule cards is that you can't use them to learn the rules of a game. I've seen the same trend of people who say "There are rules? 8O " Recently, if guests show interest, I take them to my Card Whiz (EM) and explain the limited ruleset. Sometimes, they'll want to know the rules of the other games, and I'll explain until I notice they're losing interest. Sometimes, I see that they just want to bat the ball around, and there's nothing wrong with that, either.

Posted over 11 years ago by KC_Masterpiece – in Tech: Generic ‐ Last reply over 11 years ago

Sometimes people add a nail or two to make the game easier in the home. I've seen a Blackout with both outlanes nailed off. My card whiz had extra nails added to the top of the out/inlane guide rails so that it didn't drain as easy. Maybe someone didn't like the way the ball came out of that lane, so they added the nail to make the ball go left or right. Then over time, the nail broke off from stress just above the playfield.

It is a good game, not sure I would say life time keeper, or 'desert island pin'. I found the outlanes to be too greedy. Good ruleset if you can get that far and go for the jokers first for sure. I'm working on a Gottlieb Atlantis right now have heard it mentioned in the same circles. We'll see. If I found another Card Whiz, I would restore as I did my last one. Worth playing for sure!

Opinions on Card Whiz (EM) Post #1 in topic

If a person were to keep only one EM in their collection, would Card Whiz be a good candidate for such a machine? I know there are a few reviews of the machine, but I'm talking "buy it, fix it up, keep it forever" type of machine... My wife likes the number of drop targets and 3" flippers..

Though I haven't owned those exact titles, I did really like the layout and rule set for Super Spin, so Jet Spin would have my vote. There is always something to shoot at, the left alley shot is unique and the extra ball light is a constant lure. Also had a Card Whiz, have to say the out lanes were a drain monster, but did like the ruleset, if you could complete it!

Card whiz is holding up really well, The EM's give few problems. It actually earns well too. The top earner is by far Spider man. With TZ and Demo man in a battle for second. Demo man is a really strong performer in the coin box, I think the handles really draw people in to play it. The best performing system 11 game is...Millionaire..which is very odd to me. That game earns week in and week out, and it's only a quarter.
