Munsters $13500! Wow!

#4302 2 years ago
Quoted from gonzo73:

Just about... The Mall was doomed from the beginning, after the Woolworths closed in 1980 they had no anchor stores. Noah's, the Theatres, the food court and the Mexican restaurant were the only open businesses by 1989. Then bulldozed in 1991.
Crappers.

I think not being near any major road or freeway didn't help either (I don't really consider either La Mirada Blvd. or Rosecrans in that area major in that are).
And that disastrous K-Mart (which later became a toys R Us) that was there for a short while that decided to move down the road to Beach Blvd. didn't help.

Quoted from Quartermaster:

Just a little lighthearted story for anyone who's not totally exhausted.
In 1975 my partners and I built and opened Noah's Arkade in the La Mirada Mall, in La Mirada California.
During our 14 year run some of our patrons included many of today's collectors and aficionados, among them were the honorable Mr. John Weeks himself, also a young Chuck Casey, and Kevin Glass, to mention just a few. If you were there also you'll have to shout out.
Anyway I was inspired by EricPinballFan's purchase of the Allied Leisure "Monte Carlo" (congrats Eric) The arcade was 3650 sq ft with roughly 90 to 100 games and Monte Carlo was one. Billed as a (cheap) affordable game, (maybe $695.00 I'll look through old invoices later) it was a great purchase. It consistently outearned many of it's more expensive counterparts. It's biggest competitor for cheap but productive game was Atari's "Touch Me" (think coin operated cabinet style version of Simon) If I remember correctly, price tag was $350.00 But it made A LOT of money and drove workers batty.
Beepbeep, boop boop boop beep boop beep, all day long.
Opening day was a bit harrowing as the frontage of the arcade was 60ft across with accordian security gates which were at least 20 deep with anxious kids all the way across, literally counting down the seconds, 5,4,3,2,1 they poured in like a deluge and then the strangest thing happened. For a few minutes it was eerily quiet as they were all just taking it in, unsure what to play first. Then all of a sudden, chaos as the sound of Road Runner, Panzer Attack, Flying Tigers, Midway Gangbusters, Twin Rifle, Dune Buggy, Atari Jaws, Space Race (green fiberglass cabinet), Pong, and a color pong called Wimbledon, Fire Truck, Air Hockey, and numerous pinballs sprang to life. Most of all was full attendance on Atari's Indy 800 Purchased at the astonishing 1975 price of $10,000.00 It made it's money back over time.
So when I saw that Eric had scored the Monte Carlo it took me back to an incredible time that I was very fortunate to be part of. It also reminded me of another incredible time that I was fortunate to be part of. The Museum of Pinball was for me a walk down memory lane, and also a chance for me to meet and work with a most incredible bunch of dedicated lovers of the MAGIC of Pinball and Video, and Mechanical Arcade games. We are a lucky lot and many people will never know that "MAGIC" I enjoyed all of my time working with the volunteer techs and the Weeks family, collaborating with the crew on everything from EM and solid state pins to video games dance machines and even the aforementioned Monte Carlo.
Yes I would drive the 109 miles from my home and volunteer my time again in a heartbeat just for the satisfaction of bringing "that game" any game back to life so that someone could experience the things I had.
So, from me I give a huge THANK YOU! Mr. John Weeks for gathering all these machines and helping to keep this amazing invention alive for those who didn't get to enjoy it in it's heyday.
I'd just like to say that 10 or 15 years ago, Pinball was a fading force, video games were losing out to Xbox, Playstation, CounterStrike, and many other PC Games and diversions. My original arcade, Family Fun Arcade in Granada Hills Ca, was nearing the end of it's almost 40 year run, being held together on the strength of Street Fighter competition and Dance and music games. Arcade games in general had fallen flat and there was barely a beginning of a nostalgia driven collector community or movement. Fast forward to today and it's now a bona fide force to be reckoned with.
I credit John Weeks and ALL those who contributed to the Museum of Pinball with filling that gap between the last gasp of arcades and the new emergence of this community. Many of the games sold here would have been lost forever years ago had they not been at the Museum during that period of lack of interest. John, you made that happen. Thank You for letting me play at your house. I will be eternally grateful.
So go out and support those people who are doing this in other places Tim Arnold PHOF, Steve Young Pinball Resource, Michael Schiess Pacific Pinball Museum, Nico Volta Roanoke Pinball Museum, Calif Extreme, Golden State Pinball Fest, TPF, etc. etc. you know, you fill in the blanks, or maybe, HEY WHAT THE HELL, GET BUSY, GO OUT AND BUILD YOUR OWN DAMN MUSEUM. I'll even volunteer to help.

Thanks for sharing! While I was doing the gaming on the East Coast, I was one of those crazy teens in 75, that lined up at the gates to play Atari's Indy 800 for hours.
So I looked up to the owners and techs, and mustered my first job in Tech at Pachinko Palace.
Where did the time go?

I watched the auction remembering how many of these I played new.

Noah's was closer to the post office and would be around where Riviera Lane is. probably in somebody's bedroom now.

Jaws was by the entrance and you could hear the BWOING!!!! All through the mall. Touch Me got moved to the upper deck to preserve our sanity.

BTW, remember La Mirada Bowl that was in the same are on Adelfa? They used to get a lot of new games there. It was the only place I saw a Varkon on location at.

The upper deck! I was the fool putting quarters in Omega Race and Armour Attack in 1988.

For all the volunteers and people who donated parts and games and your time to a good cause, I keep hearing you sing the praises of Mr. Weeks and the museum. But I haven’t heard from any of you if he has shown his gratitude for your sacrifices.. When you were all fixing his games for free, did he at least buy you pizza and beer? After he gave up on the museum, did he at the minimum thank you guys or hold a party? I hope so.

I just know that if I were in his shoes, after this incredible windfall, I would at least make a donation to the Human Fund in your name.

Holy cow ... my first game came from Pachinko Palace. I don't even know how my parents learned about the place, but it was a brilliant choice of Christmas present. Ended up doing the electrical power mod myself.

That's how I felt at Banning, I once walked through and counted anytime I passed a title that I had owned before. I was astounded at the number of EM's and separately SS machines I didn't count videos it was just eye opening. Again we are among a lucky lot.

I said Warlords cocktail was the most fun 4 people could have playing an arcade game. Indy 800 is double the fun. I loved playing that game at CAX. I wonder how much that game would command at auction.

There is a list a page or two back. I wanna say $25K and $32K, respectively, plus taxes and fees.

Quoted from Heretic_9:

It must be super cool to be able to drive a different classic car so many days of the year. But what a huge headache with all the registrations and the effing DMV !

He may have "dealer plates" or "in-transit repair plates" that can be put on any of his cars and taken out for a drive. I am sure his insurance agent has a blanket policy to cover him as well. Unlike most of the TV shows where they take cars out for test drives and burnouts on public roads.

Very cool memories @quartermaster!!! I’ve seen and played an Indy 800 on location in the old days… what an awesome machine and period of time to experience it in. So cool that you also had one!

I’ve seen dozens of AMAZING arcades come and go. Some with chandeliers, electric go-carts (indoors!), prototypes I’ve never seen anywhere else like a small cityscape under glass with elevators and mountains and space ships flying throughout it, the Exorex VR prototype, and since my cousin was the manager of the flagship Showbiz Pizza where it all started, double that for prototype animatronic concepts and Showscan projection reels. Also one of my father’s friends owned one of the largest distributorships for arcade and pinball machines across the entire region (O’Connor Vending), so literally every visit through that huge warehouse of games was like going to Disneyland.

Suffice it to say, with all of that inspiration growing up, it inspires me to push The Arcade Experience as far as it can go… especially in light of the fact that we may be living through the “second Renaissance” and perhaps the last of the amusement experiences we grew up with. We lost ReplayFX, now MOP, the PPM has been unfairly limited by the city regarding their huge pinball annex, and Tim’s PHOF is still carrying the flag high and mighty but has a lot of work ahead nonetheless to fully realize the dream. We gotta support the ones left!

If prices keep skyrocketing, it makes the P3 (Multimorphic) even more of a value proposition. Gerry positioned it to be like the first home console of pinball with swappable games, playfields, and networked play. Compared with the prices we’ve seen at the auction, I’m leaning toward the idea of attaining a P3 for the museum so that it can network with other owners and perhaps inspire a “third Renaissance” where pinball enters a sort of Minecraft stage where people can increasingly build and code their own games and spark another niche within the hobby. We have to keep creating!

Anyway, pardon, another long-winded reply. Pinball has taken some big hits since 2020 in terms of closings, price increases, and the limited opportunity of social gatherings due to the pandemic. Just horrible timing. But… we ain’t done yet. The joy of interacting with physics is a universal wonder which time will never erase… and few experiences do it better than pinball.

@vicjw66, don’t fret. Find yourself a production Freedom and throw it in storage. I’ll have a conversion-to-prototype kit made for about 20 people before too-too long.

When we worked on machines on the "tech days" John provided lunch and drinks. There was always an hour or two at the end of the day to play any of the machines as well. We felt well taken care of. It was a great run. I am very happy to have been a part of it..

Thanks for the boots on the ground perspective. The outrage hunters have nothing to work with here. They keep positing how John Weeks screwed everyone over and then people like yourself say "no it was great, we got snacks too!"

Quoted from vonclod:

It was a non profit museum. Can an individual just sell everything and keep the proceeds?

It wasn't a non profit musuem - They had a non profit musuem running day to day operations - but the musueum didn't own the bulk of the stuff.

Once it goes into the non-profit, it can't just be taken out outside of their mission as a straight disbursement. But it's a non-issue here... this wasn't a MoP auction really... this was a Mr Weeks + MoP miscellaneous item auction.

That sounds like a great time. I always loved going there and playing machine after machine. I like playing the paltry three that I have too. But I like working on them even more. I definitely spend more of my free time dinking around with them than playing them. I like to get into them, figure out how they work, tear down steppers, fix and tweak everything little thing. It’s an enjoyable thing to do for me. So yeah, if I had that opportunity I’d do the same and wouldn’t care a thing about getting something for it, because the work itself is the payment. A bit of pizza and beer would be frosting on the cake.

In addition to free lunch, free play at the end of the day, free admission to events, free t-shirts and hoodies, etc. John also treated all the volunteers and their families to a tech appreciation night the summer before the pandemic. John was more than generous to us and we would have done it just for the opportunity to work on those machines and learn new things from the other techs. I’m grateful he and Chuck kept it going as long as they did. I don’t regret a single minute of the rime I spend at the MoP.

Quoted from cait001:I tried to find this but the only article was some bitcoin interview where he mentions he is going to start one. Did it ever happen? Is it in progress?

From his post, he said it is open: Aspire Arcade, 1717 S. Decatur Blvd, open Fri-Sun. He also said something about looking for a larger space?

Thanks for posting that. It fills in some history on JW that probably almost none of us knew, re his long involvement in our shared addiction -- er, uh, hobby.

Quoted from Coindork:

No, not the exact machine I played when I was a kid.
The bowling alley by my house had a Depthcharge.
Effectively the same game, but in a SEGA Gremlin cabinet (same cabinet as Frogger but white).
Sub Hunter was the European version of this game licensed to Taito.
If you look at the coin door, the coin eject buttons are denominated in British Pence.
The American version was basically just a white Frogger cabinet with a little bit of graphics on it.
They went all out graphically on the Euro version, which is one of the things that makes it special
The second variation is that the Euro version uses a two way mirror that reflects a color background (Similar to Varkon, Space Invaders, EM shooting games etc.)
It looks like a color game, but is not.
The American version only had a blue gel overlay to make the black and white monitor "look like the ocean".
The Euro version took it to another level.
Anyhow, my main arcade collecting interest is pre golden era black and white game from the "bronze age of arcades".
I have about 40 different games from this era including things like Atari Pong, Sky Diver, Death Race etc.
This was a real gem to add to the collection and one where I friggin adore the gameplay to boot.
If ZapCon happens again you will see this machine at the show,
My buddy Paul (one of the show organizers) has asked my to do a black and white game exhibit when the show opens back up and I'm really looking forward to that.

Europe had Depthcharge also. Sub Hunter is Taito Japan. Europe and Australia, and other areas probably all had the option of getting one from a Taito distributor.

Thanks for posting that. It fills in some history on JW that probably almost none of us knew, re his long involvement in our shared addiction -- er, uh, hobby.

Quoted from vicjw66:

When I worked for my dad during the summer I would go to the Family Fun arcade during my lunch break. Good times. The last time I went there was around 2004. I drove by and was surprised it was still open. Pretty much every arcade had closed down by then. I talked to a guy that worked there for a bit. He said he had a prototype Earthshaker (where the building drops down). I tried to buy it from him but he said it was not for sale. Was that you?

There was (at least until the pandemic struck) an arcade out this way in Vista or San Marcos, called Tilt!, next to some mall anchor stores that might not still be there either. Despite the name, it had just 2 or 3 pins, most of the coin-ops there being video stuff or redemption games. Mostly the latter. Anyway, I don't think I ever got to meet the guy who owned the pins -- who may not have been the owner of Tilt! itself -- but he had some choice pins that he rotated into "his" portion of the floor, and he also worked on them in a back room. I did inquire about purchasing at least one of them, but they were usually not for sale. That said, he did occasionally post a for sale sign with a price listed on others. Tilt! was where I would go to play Centaur, since I had never seen one in the wild earlier in its history or in mine, and where I decided that I needed to get one, which I eventually did.

From his post, he said it is open: Aspire Arcade, 1717 S. Decatur Blvd, open Fri-Sun. He also said something about looking for a larger space?

Besides Tim's PHOF, there was another (open sometimes) venue in LV that I went to several times. Not the guy who had a place with a nice collection and was open for awhile, but packed everything up and was said to have gone back to Australia with it. I never got to see that one, unfortunately. I'm referring to the place that used to be in a strip mall right near McCarran airport, but relocated to another spot close to half an hour away. Never did get to see their subsequent location. They also had a nice collection, and were very welcoming to visitors. Can't recall the name of it just now, but they had a website and a newsletter. I hope they are still functioning, somewhere in that area.

[Just pulled an old business card of theirs: the name was Flipperspiel.]

There are so many folks lamenting the end of tech days at the museum, but fear not! If you live in the Northeast and wish to volunteer endless days tinkering and repairing machines, you are more than welcome to come to the Wow! Arcade and work on my games!

I’m there every day, shoot me a PM!

Oh, wow! I remember that one! For some reason, my dad always took me to the one in Panorama City..."USA Arcade"?

Quoted from TimO:

In addition to free lunch, free play at the end of the day, free admission to events, free t-shirts and hoodies, etc. John also treated all the volunteers and their families to a tech appreciation night the summer before the pandemic. John was more than generous to us and we would have done it just for the opportunity to work on those machines and learn new things from the other techs. I’m grateful he and Chuck kept it going as long as they did. I don’t regret a single minute of the rime I spend at the MoP.

Quoted from D-Gottlieb:

When we worked on machines on the "tech days" John provided lunch and drinks. There was always an hour or two at the end of the day to play any of the machines as well. We felt well taken care of. It was a great run. I am very happy to have been a part of it..

Good to hear.

Well, bad news update to my post #4328, but hardly a surprise.

https://www.yelp.com/biz/tilt-carlsbad

The fact that it no longer showed in the area's PinballMap was a strong indication. Yelp is a good place to check on whether a restaurant or other business still exists, and they keep the info online for a good while. I'm thinking it would have been a major challenge to keep a place like this going, even without any pandemic.

Yep. He provided food for the tech events. We even had a open to all techs, friends, and family, day a few years ago. We didn't have a going away event, but I believe that was more do to other factors he could not control (insurance and permits) and scheduling issues.

Just to sum up about what I stated many pages ago, with all the cost associated with running the place for 7 years, and all cross countries trips John made tracking down games, I do not think he is making a "windfall". I have not seen his books at all, but I and many others close to him, fell he is around breaking even on this dream of his.

Ralph- love you brother. You brought a little tear to my eyes down your memory lane.
I've said it before, and will again.
We as a community were so lucky that John and the Week's family shared his dream, passion, and personal collection with so many around the world. From far and wide they came to the largest collection in the world. Just to walk the rooms and take it in visualy could easily be a 5 hour experience itself.
Ralph, I look forward to see you again soon and have you play that Monte Carlo. Pics coming soon.

If you make it to the end you get a free game. The last hole before that, if you glue a magnet before it, under the molded plastic course, pulls the ball into the hole and no free game.

No idea how I know that.

When I was a kid I always suspected pinballs to have magnets near the outlands, so I always tried to sneak behind the maintenance guy when he had the playfield up !

I said Warlords cocktail was the most fun 4 people could have playing an arcade game.

I went to pick up a 2 player stand up Warlords and when I saw it, black and white. And saw the sit down 4 player in color, I picked that one up instead.

Great game, popular for a long time. A lot of fun.

Pre Gorgar I often had people accuse me of having magnets in machines. I'd tell them I'll open any game and show you. I also had a magnet similar to what Williams later used in TZ etc. I'd show them how big they'd have to be to effect the ball. I told them that was from the old gambling pin days when players tried cheating the machines and operators countered with trying to cheat the players.

Then I get Gorgar, with a mother luvin magnet in it. Then I go through every person I ever told there weren't magnets in the games, asking about that.

And more disappointing news, though again not unexpected:

So that's gone, and unlikely to return. Makes me want to hear more about this Aspire Arcade . . . even though I haven't made it back to Vegas for around three years at this point.

Pictures of Noah's Arkade have so far remained elusive, I'm working on that. The best I can do for now is this old school picture from the Street Fighter era at Family Fun Arcade (Granada Hills, my flagship location)

The original sign from Family Fun Arcade, is on permanent display, along with a free play arcade exhibit at Valley Relics Museum in Van Nuys California. Here is a recent picture of our current lineup. There may soon be news regarding a forthcoming arcade event at the Museum. Stay tuned

Didn't buy anything from it (still a novice and those hammer prices kept me away from bidding). But I can say it got me interested enough to sign up on here, reach out to a local-ish distributor, and start following things more closely.

Welcome to the club.

If by your local-ish distributor you're referring to Chris at Pinball Pirate, he's a very knowledgeable, great guy to do business with. Can't beat his in-house warranty service.

The Fantastik Indoor Swap Meet. I was there a couple of months ago and there was a little arcade in one corner, a half dozen pinball machines and some video games. I guess I'll have to go back down there this weekend to see if anything has changed.

There's a new place in Las Vegas, Diversions Amusements. It's private, only open when having an event at this point; Joe is running one there tomorrow. Has about 25 games I think, mostly Sterns and '90's Bally-Williams. I'll check it out if I'm ever in town the right day. There's another in the works from what the locals told me, no details yet.
