I mean, it’ll work dry, but what about preventing future wear? Nearly every ball bowler/pinball machine maintenance manual from the manufacturer refers to adding lubricant on stepper rivets. Luckily, we’ve got much better formulas to choose from nowadays...

I think "DT" is referring to previous folks who used a pound of axle grease mixed with glue! Now when we find these games, we need a hammer and chisel to free the steppers!

That's what I'm talking about.
They aren't locked up, but there's a ton of grease on all of the plungers and shafts on the score reels and ball count unit. . It's still yellow and gooey. Gonna have to clean that up.
I'm also going to have to fix the previous owners cabinet "repairs" and "repaints"

Ahhhhh gotcha. Yep, nothing like over-greased, under-serviced mechs sitting dormant for years... solidifying into an immobile dust-cake of sadness.
One thing which I haven't seen addressed in pinball circles is "Black Lube" (traditional grease - most often found around gears and latches, always gunked up). Common advice is to remove it all and run dry... but I'm concerned about minimizing wear over time. At festivals or busy arcades on free play, it's pretty easy to log hundreds of plays over a single weekend. Multiply that all year long and it might become a concern. Obviously not an issue for home use.
The modern equivalent would be a synthetic grease like Royal Purple Ultra Performance Grease. I've seen some worn gear teeth and latches in EM's... wonder if that could have been prevented with a little grease like they did at the factory and how long it would last.
Just thinking out loud. Might have to apply some to a test game and observe how quickly it dusts up and affects movement.
Probably for a different thread, but I use just a then coating of a silicone lube that Radio Shack sold years ago. I don't think it's available anymore.
Good luck getting that Volley going; I bought one in very nice condition last year that I enjoy playing very much, mine is set for 130,000 for a free game and that's tough to achieve, much easier to try to get all the drop targets down and go for the special alternating up top; it's definitely one of those games that you want to always play just one more to try to beat!

I've gone through most of it and it's just about 100% playable. I just need to find why the 100's relay gets stuck sometimes, I'm thinking the pop bumper switch stack. And the FS relay needs to be rebuilt. The 10,000 pt score reel wasn't counting up, that was due to the globs of grease on it, I'm still scratching my head on that one, will have to go through all of the steppers.
The seller was so proud of his work.
It will need some cosmetic TLC, but overall, it's pretty much playable now.
Looks good. Is this playfield clear coated even with the paint missing from the sock or are you planning to touch that up?

not clear coated, just cleaners up with 2 coats of wax. I am planning on doing the touchups.

The face has been replaced. It's not the correct size, and poorly attached. The glass can fall between the head and the face. The repaint job is horrible, it's glossy, no webbing and the wrong colors. The head is also held together by dry wall screws. I'm sure I'm missing a few things too.
Oh yes, the top right corner of the left side looks like, for lack of a better description, an abrasion. The plywood has beef scraped or maybe sanded bellow the 1st ply. It’s going to take some skill to square that corner, and it would cause me to repaint that side. And with having to repaint the side and front, I’d have to repaint the entire head. Which I’m sure in turn would require an entire cabinet repaint.

Pinsude had a glitch when I posted that. I was in reference to the what’s wrong with my head question.
The numbers look blue because that’s stencil material that I used to mask the score reel windows for triple thick. I left them in place for when the white gets touched up.

Looks like the ones I used to see all the time when I was young. I remember the cigarette machines too. I remember back in 1973 the one my uncle had in his theater in Marathon Florida.

Wow! When in doubt - keep on applying more lube I guess. Still learning but not quite sure why so many in this hobby think that lube, more lube, followed by a can of WD-40 is going to finally get everything working

Generally they are not in the hobby, there're just folks who own a pinball machine or two for their game room along with many other toys and don't know the first thing about fixing them, just playing them to death without anyone properly servicing them, then selling them to us after they beat the shit out of them at eBay pricing.

I'm newer so trying to learn all I can and came across this: seems very experienced and spraying WD-40:

Advocates for spraying with WD-40, he says that "electronically it dries out anyway". At 48:31 you can watch him spray all over score motor including switch stacks etc. I own a machine where score motor, relays and much of everything else on bottom board is covered in something so now I think I know what it is.

Well now I know ill never buy anything from those guys. There is no reason whatsoever to use WD-40 in a pinball machine. A dab of Teflon grease and/or oil on a few parts like steppers, score motor, metal to metal moving parts, and that should be it.
