I need to rebuild flippers on a Space Mission - is it possible to upgrade these the same way you describe for early williams SS machines, or do i just need to grab the historically accurate kit from PBR?

Quoted from sohchx:Has anyone done a how to like this for Williams systems 3-6?? I need to do a rebuild on a system 6 machine.
This is where vid covers it in this thread:

Quoted from chuckwurt:Rebuilding my fire! Flippers. My coil has this tab that will not let me install the coil as you suggested. Should I just get it the way it came factory, or is it that big of a deal that I need a new could that I can flip around per your instructions?
Recently did my Big Guns flips and drilled/filed the plate opposite the coil stop to let the tab fit and it worked like a charm.
A few weeks ago i rebuilt my Space Mission (williams 76) flippers with the kit from PBR, and i'm finding it hard to be satisfied. The coils are good, i've cleaned/filed the cabinet switches, and i've adjusted the EOS gap about 100,000 times. Not my first flipper rebuild (i've followed this guide 4 times previously with excellent results, but not with this era williams).
No matter what i do, there are a few problems:
1. flip power is lacking. it just doesn't have much umph from either flipper. it almost seems slow or sluggish.
2. hold power is lacking. when the ball comes down and hits the flipper in it's hold position the flipper bounces quite a bit (like the ball is hitting a trampoline).
3. There is a small amount of play even when the flippers are in their default position, so if i'm trying to execute a bounce pass the flipper gives a bit and absorbs some of that momentum.
Is there a trick to getting these 70s williams mechs adjusted correctly, or something else to check out? I'm considering upgrading to the newer style mechs but there isn't a lot of room under the playfield in that area. Thoughts?
Quoted from UvulaBob:I don't have a punch tool, so I'd need to buy one. How exact do the measurements need to be? I'd hate for the spring to be too slack or tight because I screwed something up.
I did my Big Guns conversion by hand with a good hand drill and fresh bit. It's doable.
My existing old style williams shafts are completely mangled and impossible to adjust appropriately. I tried to smooth out the shaft with dremel sanding flap wheel but there is just too much material gone.
I can't find a single source for old style shafts, and it seems like the only way forward is with modern flippers. Advice?
Quoted from vid1900:NEVER PUT A MODERN FLIPPER INTO AN OLD STYLE MECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ever.
Quoted from vid1900:You could update the game with a modern flipper mech, and never worry about expensive replacement parts again.
Thanks - i was planning on doing this "someday" so I guess i better bite the bullet and get on with it.
