Quoted from JethroP:

Here's an idea for the creative....I used to use liquid smoke in my electric train set as a kid. Why not add a heating coil and liquid smoke in a pinball game for the special effect? Houdini, smoke and mirrors. AC/DC Rock n Roll Train, etc....

i thought of doing something like that to have smoke coming from a magic lamp topper on ToTAN -

#5052 6 months ago
Quoted from Billc479:

You would have to go by smell - for those who haven't smelled the smoke that exits coils and wires, they would have to set up a test to learn the scent!

There is nothing like smelling a burning coil during a show and the mad dash to figure out which game it is coming from.

#5053 6 months ago
Quoted from pinzrfun:

That smoke was made in England, will that work in a domestic machine?

Should be fine, just so long as its positive earth.

That's the sort of effect that would be really cool... until the first time the liquid smoke ran out and nobody ever replaces it. Especially in an on location game.

Or the sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach when you realize it’s yours?

It's from Lucas. It won;'t work in anything.

Owned a classic Mini Cooper ('72) back in the 2000s - I had more issues with the wiring than everything else. Engine starts to stutter and fail? Wiring. Steering wheel broke off? Wiring. It was horrid. By the time I sold that car, at least 90% of the harness was new.

The Lucas Electric motto: “Get home before dark.”
Lucas–inventor of the first intermittent wiper.
Lucas–inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
“I’ve had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob…
If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either.
Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank.
It’s not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm’s Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.
Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner “How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?” “He replied, it doesn’t matter which one you use, nothing happens!”
Back in the ’70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn’t suck.
Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer.
Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes the refrigerators.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone.
Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb.
Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.
Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times sunwise around your car chanting: “Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant.”
Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.

I think that applies nicely to pinball, because the coils are usually connected to common +50V, with drive coming from negative side.

Wow, excellent redirection back to the topic!
I love the Lucas jokes - heard many of them in the 70s when there were a lot of British bikes around. There's a great place to continue that conversation - https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinside-car-club.
Now let's see some more horrifically abused pinball machines!!!

And, you bolt the legs directly to the floor, especially keepers. If the left/right pitch is wrong, you should play with one shoe on. Pinball 101.

I was once offered a Flash Gordon, that had, as the seller said "some wear where the ball moves". Meaning the playfield was almost bare wood. Looks like the ball has been moving quite a lot in that Mata Hari

Well, it is only $1,925, so you wouldn't expect them to splash out on new rubbers.

Never buy a luxury item on credit if you can’t afford it. WTF.

But he only live once
Me on the other hand I only die once, I live every day.
Think about that and the difference becomes obvious

I've learned that fiscally conservative people and fiscally irresponsible people will never understand each other and rarely will someone that is irresponsible with their finances turn things around. It used to drive me nuts when I'd see people do stupid things with their money, but now I just shake my head and accept that people wired the way they are.

Personally, I'm on the fiscally conservative side. I look at it as this is what helps the economy keep rolling along, so I'm ok with it.

Why the hell does he own 3 virtual pinball machines?? Can’t you just load up a different “table” on one unit? It’s not like he’s got 6 arms to play all 3 at the same time!!
