Quoted from mooch:

Remember making book covers for your school textbooks using brown paper grocery bags? I got pretty good at doing this myself as a kid. By the end of the school year, each cover was thoroughly defaced by my goofy doodles and stickers.
[quoted image]

This is one of those that triggered a memory I had completely forgotten for many years. But as soon as I saw the pic, I remembered. Yes, we absolutely did do this. We had very little money when I was a kid, and we were taught to take good care of our stuff, including our school books.

I was really in to horror comics, too. I liked the Warren magazines best. They did not comply with the Comics Code. I cycle them through these frames in my office periodically. Next are a few other survivors pulled randomly. Did anybody else read Plop! ? It was sort of a Mad magazine meets horror comics mash up.

LOL Funny how you mentioned the Plop magazine from DC comics. I've been collecting comics for years and decided to go out and find those Plop issues. Found a few out in the wild, but had to use eBay to get most of them. Loved the Sergio Aragones art in them and finally completed my run and they are kinda hard to find.

Those Warren magazines bring back so many memories for me as a kid. I remember I had an uncle who happened to work for a Warren distributor (his last name was Warren as well) and he use to bring home a TON of those black and white horror issues for us kids to read. We had a blast with them and I remember how fantastic those covers looked. Whenever I went over and spent the night with my cousins we read those things religiously. Aaaahhh the memories!

It was full of memories, wondercon. I was with a friend who is into 3D printing and there were several vendors showcasing that in different ways. Both finished product and systems themselves. I commented to him a year ago, someone should be in that space making money. The package 3 d printer crowd. They are there now. Go figure. It’s all about the Benjamin’s…. At least partially.

3-D printer sellers have been plentiful at San Diego Comic con for several years along with computer art programs and companies like Wacom.

girloveswaffles I owned that 1st appearance of Swamp Thing once but with the others I sold it years ago. I loved the horror comics and DC did have the best Marvel was mainly Monster comics like Where Creatures Dwell and such. But I liked those too just different.

The one comic that John Byrne did and could be made into a movie or two but wasn't published by either Marvel or DC and it was great to read Doomsday + 1

You can save those MAD magazines now too as they have quit publishing them. I guess time has moved on kids now just don't have time for them sad to say.

So nothing of real value then? You'd think they'd at least have something decent, like Action Comics #251 (the oldest Superman) or Action Comics #296 (Superman impersonating Ant Man) or Metal Men #1 (which inspired The Weather Girls' It's Raining Men).

I don't think a set of all three of those comic books in mint condition would be worth anywhere near the $775,000 price tag on that Action Comics #1, let alone the record of $3,250,000 for one copy that was auctioned off last year.

At some point in the future we will discuss action number one further. I thought the tag seemed low, but… I got a lot to say on action one. I hope to own one.

I religiously read Mad and some time ago I bought all of the back issues on DVD and I have been gradually going through those for entertainment. For some reason I never read Cracked.

Check this out, back issues of Cracked to read:

I collected comics pretty heavily in the 70s, buying back issues at a local comic book collectors shop
in San Jose for about 25-to-50cents a pop.
Mostly superhero stuff, in the end I eventually had fairly complete runs
of all the Marvel superhero books and most DC superhero books
from 1965 to 1980, about 6000 to 6500 books in all.
The last 10 yrs I have been slowly selling off my collection.
First my doubles, then most of the misc titles like horror/monster/western books
and books from Misc publishers like Charlton/Seaboard/Tower/AMG/MLJ etc.
It was hard at first to let go, especially when it got into the DC then Marvel titles.
So far I have sold about 4800 books and took in about $41,000.
Probably half of that cash came from selling just 800 of the most collectible iconic issues.
(in reality probably just 80 books brought in half the cash
and if those older 1960s books were in better condition (NearMint);
I could have easily doubled my money.
Not a bad investment, for an initial outlay of about $2000-2500 at the time back in the 70s.
I still have most of my Marvels left (already sold FF, Silver Surfer, Spidey, Xmen)
leaving Strange Tales with Doc Strange and NickFury Agent of SHIELD.
Tales to Astonish with Hulk and Sub-Mariner;
Tales of Suspense with Capt America & Iron Man
and Avengers + Warlock + Capt Marvel

I did not do comics very much. A little bit of Superman, The Mummy, and Roy Rogers.

I spent my teenage years toking up, cranking up the stereo, and "reading" the album covers. Lots of cool art on the album covers back then.

I had I think 1-4 of Doomsday+1 I didn't have any other Charlton John Byrne's, but the way I did see him in person in Chicago back in the late 80's. I saw a X-men cover art page there and it was way pricey for the time.

I traded a friend of mine many years ago for a comic book be got at a out of the way auction back in the 80's. I think it was $20 worth of comics at the time. But made the mistake of trading it also as it was a Detective #100! How many times do you see a #100 in your hands and not in bad shape either.

The best buy as a dealer at a small convention at Ball State here in the 80's a Whiz #25 first app of Captain Marvel Jr (it was repaired but a good job done on it) the dealer at that time wanted $35.00 and I got it for $30.00. I sold it to help pay the down payment on my last rental I bought in 2010.

Captain Marvel Jr. is one of my Golden Age comics, Mainly because it was drawn by Mac Raboy, the same artist that did the Flash Gordon newspaper comics.

I also had some Marvel Family and even a couple of Mary Marvel issues. Back in the 80's hardly anyone was collecting them I had maybe 30 different issues in total. Now all I have is a 20 cent #1 Shazam.

By the way you do know how much these issues are going for now? I did sell a Teenage Mutant Turtles #1 Ist print (3000 print run) at that Ball State comic convention for a friend of mine for a total of $20.00 and most dealers at that time were not even interested in it.

And a lot of those we illustrated by Kurt Schaffenberger who after fawcett closed up their comics division went on to DC and drew a lot of Superman related titles (Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen and Supergirl in many issues of Action Comics and Adventure Comics as well as some Superman stories).

I was a Superman Comic Fan, and likely have most all of my .12 Cent ones from the 60s.

They remind may of the days lying in the grass on my back reading, and watching the clouds, and the sunset,
until the fireflies came out.

Or the Smell of Coppertone, and taking a break at the beach, with the newest release.

MAD has a special place in my heart, for the Magazine, and later spending time in NY offices.
Nothing but weed and laughter!

I used to play this “Dots and Boxes” game a lot in high school.
I would make a grid of dots, connect one line and silently hand it to a friend who immediately knew what to do.
Sometimes a sheet of graph paper would be used for an epic battle.

Quoted from mooch:

I remember getting super excited over this 1969 Sunday Comics ad for a free Green Giant kite. I pestered my Mom into buying a bunch of Green Giant stuff, then mailed in the labels as instructed. I was thrilled when that kite showed up!

I do remember this Star Trek Spock kite (in fact, very similar to Green Giant, lol) being passed down to me. I lost it the very first time I flew it. My bad, I let it take the full 500ft spindle but didn't know it was not tied to the handle. It went crazy fast up until I lost sight, never saw it again. That thing did have warp engines!

That is a strange feeling to watch your kite fly off and get smaller and smaller...

In grade school every spring we had a kite day, and in 6th grade I was all set to become a legend. I had rigged up a dual string kite with a secret compartment, with the second string rigged so that, when yanked, it would strike a match and ignite a cherry bomb!

I don't remember if I chickened out, or if my mother put the kibosh on it or what, but I have regetted ever since that I never got to pull off that stunt. Cripes, these days I wouldn't even consider it...
