So I played the game today again - happy to report the flippers were fine. I think my actual issue is the button itself which is a clear button and feels more springy that most - David was kind enough to talk to me about this and it was a great discussion. He said they were WMS buttons but I’m pretty sure that’s WMS compatible buttons and suggested he get some from Doug at CGC to try out!

The game looks in good shape and it’s fun to shoot - the theme is not my cup of tea for sure but given David’s intense customer focus (at-least with my chat to him) I’m sure these guys are going to go far both with this game and more to come.

Neil.

Quoted from wesman:Eyes definitely have an unequal distance. That's accurate, but his lower eyelid shaped is too slim/almond, as seen here in this great reference photo.
I also think the left crinkle, his right, in the smile doesn't help the likeness. It just looks off.
[quoted image]

A lot of inaccurate eye comments here.

Eye misalignment is termed strabismus. There is no indication is the photo here that David Bowie had strabismus. Many things can make it appear as though someone does. This is called pseudostrabismus.

Don’t know what “crinkling” and “almond shaped” mean. Facial asymmetry is virtually universal. If you look in the mirror, you likely will have some.

The facial and ocular anatomy/alignment critiquing here is amusing, to say the least.

Like a few said before, when the only complaint we have a debate about is David Bowie's eyes on the backglass…..

Pinside can never be happy, at peace, there is always something they could have done better.

That says a lot about the quality of that launch

Just go to the gtf hype thread and scroll back to TPF when that game was unveiled. Night and day difference in overall narrative. Hell, even kanada (mostly) stopped ragging on the company name out of reverence of what a great job BoF has done..

So happy with my foolish decision to preorder before hearing any consumer feedback!

Labyrinth pinball features on their website says it has "Crystal Ball Flipper Buttons". The pics and videos I see show standard clear buttons. Anyone know what is unique about these buttons I'm not seeing?

Probably just their fancy term for clear buttons. JJP now calling their flippers "supercharged" on Elton John, just means they finally addressed the squishy feel so many complained about for years and called it a "feature" now.

We saw the movie last night.
Our youngest daughter(10),fancied it the most, the rest of us, thought it was ok.

Isn't it resembling a bit to woz?
Young girl, goes on adventure/quest and picks up friends along the way....

100% It parallels the film in many ways. It was basically a 1980s WOZ. Sarah is Dorothy, Bowie is the Wizard. Ludo, Hoggle and Sir Didymus are the cowardly lion, scarecrow and tin man. The maze is the yellow brick road, munchins everywhere, goblins are flying monkeys etc etc... Also in the first act when the camera is panning right in Sarah's room by a bunch of books they have a Wizard of Oz book prominent.

edit. There are also similarities to Alice in Wonderland as well.

On the backglass eyes issue, much like the movie poster, it is meant to be "unsettling" to the viewer, and I think it achieves that nicely.

On the "Crystal ball flipper buttons" - I've never experienced clear flipper buttons that didn't eventually start binding up/sticking. Something about the plastic they use for them that is different from the solid colored ones. Because I like to play my games, and not just look at them, I always end up replacing the clear buttons with solid ones.

I'll replace mine if they fail.

Haha holy crap, I knew who he was but you made me second guess myself and I was way off. I was reading some back story on the film last week which made references to a TJ Miller with Wizard of Oz overlaps but made the mistake of reading it as he wrote Labyrinth. Fact checking myself today and boy was I wrong lol... DOH

Looks like an epic game, I just turned 40, This was one of my favorite movies as a kid! I have a 3 year old son and a 7 year old daughter who loves it also. Can't wait to get ours!!

#2166 6 months ago

This is a dream theme for me. I never thought this would get made into a pin.

It's one of my favorite movies. I'm a huge fan of Labyrinth and Dark Crystal, and it's a toss up which is my favorite.

Probably too pricey for me to actually entertain getting one. I hope to see one in person some day.

Man, if I did get one, I would want the the topper, but I know my ceiling isn't tall enough...

#2167 6 months ago

Really happy for people who have this as a dream theme. I just can’t see how anyone who loves labyrinth could be unhappy with this game and that’s the ultimate test.

It’s a test that failed miserably for a much more experienced company like JJP with their poor attempt at capturing the same with TS and Godfather. So good job barrels.

I continue to sit on the sidelines bc w/1100, as they produce them and the market saturates further with much better themes, this game will not only be available but for cheaper but if I’m a die hard Labyrinth guy, I’m definitely in now so I can get the game as early as possible regardless of loss impact bc I would assume it’s bolted.

And btw that stock translite looks much better in person. Again if I’m really into the theme, why not go all in with Bowie all up in your face. I understand. And that topper? Damn is that impressive.

#2168 6 months ago
Quoted from NeilMcRae:

suggested he get some from Doug at CGC to try out!

They both are probably getting from the same source.

Difference is some have a soft internal spring and some styles don't.

Clear or translucent ones usually have the spring.

The ones without the spring depend on the leaf blade or opto interrupter to pop the flipper button back out after it's pressed.

Easy for an owner to switch if they want more or less.

Ya'll do know that Bowie got punched in a bar fight in the 70s and one of his eyes was blinded?

Actually it was a childhood playground skirmish.

Quoted from Darth_Chris:I'm waiting to hear from my distro. I called him yesterday and he said he is in discussion with Barrels of fun. So few distros for us up here. Direct would be too expensive for shipping, brokage fees and customs.
We have Nitro in the West but i'm in Quebec on the other side of the country. Fingers crossed. I want the whole thing. Pin, topper, alternate translite and nipper.
Let's go Barrels of fun.

We have many customers in Quebec. It doesn’t cost you anymore than our customers in the West.

Quoted from natgreystar:

Did you try more than one machine? We played the machine on the far left at the beginning and end of Thursday. It seemed to be working great. It might have been a defect, sensor issue, or just maybe something weird. I know the machine with the topper got way more play and some of the machines I saw dudes just cranking the cabinet and smacking the buttons like crazy. Some people play pinball like a child having a tantrum.
They confirmed that they will be offering support and replacement parts if they have defects, especially if you buy from a distributor. I'm not super specific on how I expect a flipper to feel but if shots consistently miss or don't make sense or especially if the flipper has wobble then I question quality. My distributor said they can walk you through stuff over the phone if you know how to do maintenance and will deal with getting warranty stuff if it's necessary.

I tried two machines on thursday around 3-5 pm. The consistent issue I had was if I held the right flipper up and the ball shot out of left scoop it would knock the the flipper bat down instead of bouncing off the flipper. I tried this maybe 15-25 times over 3 games on the far left machine.

I am supper happy to hear that no-one else seemed to experience this consistently. So to me it sounds like there is no real issue and the stars were just not aligned in my favor.

Once again, I am highly impressed with the game and how the flippers fire. I am happy I ordered one, super big congrats to Barrels of Fun

#2172 6 months ago

Just watched the movie for the first time in more than twenty years. It’s great source material for a pin. Really looking forward to HAAG in a few weeks. My wife is certainly interested in us potentially getting this machine if it shoots as well as a Stern (like many are saying it does).

Oddly, I giggled out loud as I hit the ball back three times in a row before the ramp could close back down. I wish that was a reward of some sort. On the fourth one, I just did a drop catch instead and hit the left scoop.

Generally a flipper button issue. I don't remember if leaf blade or opto. If leaf blade, odds are one of the contacts isn't making good contact with the leaf blade, or needs cleaning.

I've seen this occasionally on new flipper button leaf blades. Works great in test and kind of works in game play until a ball hits it. Easy fix. Peen the contact on the leaf blade hard, or solder the contact to the leaf blade.

And I'm not blaming Barrels Of Fun. I don't recall if Labyrinth has flipper button leaf blades or opto switches. They source new parts and install them. A tiny problem like this would pop up later after lots of game play.

If opto, clean the optos and be sure the opto interrupter fully clears the optos when the flipper button is pressed, not still partially blocking one.

If I was buying the game I'd want the alternate backglass. Not because the Bowie art is bad, I just prefer non-headshot style images, and the creatures are the draw for me. (My entire modding career was basically built on the back of removing actor headshots lol)

It's a painting though. It's okay for it to not be perfect. Our brains are wired to really notice anything off about faces. It's why the "uncanny valley" effect exists. But I'd rather see imperfections from the hand of the artist than a perfect photograph personally.

I'm just happy there weren't likeness problems. In this day an age rights are complicated, and the actor strike right now makes things more fraught than usual. Bowie isn't with us anymore, and maybe that helped, or maybe it added complications. Either way they did a great job of being respectful and true to the character, and I wouldn't take that for granted.

#2179 6 months ago

Sorry, I'm still not on board with Bowie's face.
Could just as well be a fashion/cosmetics model.

I know it's minor but several people asked me about this -- both are thick backglasses, with the character one being mirrored. Thanks for the kind words!

For what it's worth a friend of mine went to Expo mainly to play Labyrinth and Elton John. Someone he knows got him in early one day so he got a decent amount of time on both. He loves both themes (went to Elton's farewell tour) and ended up ordering a Labyrinth. I thought for sure he would get Elton. He might still but he said he much preferred Labyrinth because "it was just more fun." He mentioned the voice and sounds on Elton got annoying.

Not the most detailed review I know but thought I'd put it here. Based on direct orders selling out it seems maybe a bunch of folks had the same reaction after playing it. My friend ordered direct yesterday I believe.

As one of the few that was able to get and pay full price directly for BOF I am happy to read all the good reviews and especially hear that no machines went down due to failure. A few days of all day usage with nothing major happen makes me happy as an early adopter to a new pinball company. Can’t wait to flip it.

If anyone knows where to buy one of the red shirts, please let me know.

I’d love to get one and wear it on stream or at my next tourney.

I’d be curious about the shirt also. They were handing them out to those who ordered at expo. I placed my order with my distributor after I had already flown home.

Seeing as it was intentional to leave Sarah out of the game, and it's you navigating Bowie's Labyrinth... It seems like a missed opportunity to have his crystal ball be mirrored in the backglass so it'd be you he'd be keeping an eye on...

Anyway, looks cool! Not up my alley to buy, but I'd drop a few plays on one for sure!
