Quoted from mbaumle:Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down. Wait.
Are you guys telling me that the cat hasn’t been the one doing all this work the whole time?!
I feel lied to.
Quoted from beelzeboob:I'm going to be REALLY happy if this suddenly morphs into a Rip On Dave thread...
Better not turn into that! Dave is my friend and I'll defend him ferociously!

Please enter the basement. I brought this one on myself lol! They know about the “neighbor” and the shenanigans.

Full disclosure: I love the guy and would never do anything hurtful. It's all just playful nonsense. Back to your playfield, buddy!
So she’s happy we are working on it so she’s rolling. “We” meaning her.

This board makes for an easy connection when doing the 3rd magnet modification.
This is what has already been done:
Playfield for 3rd magnet (or modified original).
Added optos for magnet along with the drilling of ball guides. Wires soldered and ran below PF.
Install new magnet.
Populate the under playfield solenoid board with an additional TIP 36C, diode and resistor.
What’s left:
Victor’s board piggybacks on the opto board under the playfield and allows the extra opto pairs to tie to it. You’ll need a 5 pin .156 connector (I only have IDC’s) and a plug for the center pin for the key. His board has the labeling which could not make life easier. Run them long enough to make the connection and plug in. I did not have any of the correct wire colors so I made sure to take pics of what color is soldered to what on both the TX and RX optos.
Now you just need to run some wire from the under playfield solenoid board to the 50v and SOL2. Run them long enough to reach the magnet. I happen to have the Molex so I pinned it so it’s removable. You could just cut the connector off that magnet and solder direct if you don’t care. I had the right color wires here, but they’re solid color with no tracer colors. That’s fine because it still is different.
That’s it! It’s ready to go.

Getting to the finish line with it. Wrapped up all but three mechs as the need to be done off the rotisserie. Flipper bats in, pops all done and adjusted.

That looks fantastic! Does this mean we can get back to some funny memes soon? Pleeeeeeease!!!
GI and all inserts tested. Replaced one bad insert bulb holder that was flakey.

Capture (resized).PNGmbaumle has it up running with some tweaks. Most importantly, the third magnet set up is working with a huge thanks to DumbAss for the help. The effect is pretty basic in concept, but it awesome in person. And well worth it if you're doing a swap!
I'm hoping he has some video to share soon!
EDITED: He posted as I was typing!
Coming here to stick a fork in this thread!
I got the playfield all mated with the cabinet. My game room is a mess, so forgive me for not having any cabinet pictures at the moment. But the final list of upgrades done:
RadCals, playfield, titan rings, new speaker panel, CPR mirrored backglass (highly recommend this if your translite is scratched up), 3rd magnet hardware, and gumballs in the gumball machine. I'm a purist at heart and I'm not too keen on mods, so I kept the old DMD, and prefer the soft and warm look of incandescents. My goal for this game, like all games in my collection, is to have a crisp understated look.
Anyway, I can't sing Dave's praises enough! Only 3 tweaks really needed to be done after the inaugural boot up: A single 5 second trough switch adjustment, a single solenoid that had a little broken wire (another 5 minute resolder job), and a little tweaking of the bridge diverter. That's all!
This game plays smoother and faster than James Bond dipped in olive oil slipping between satin bed sheets.
Lastly, regarding the 3rd magnet mod. Remember how I said it was a pain in the ass and probably not worth it? I take it back. I take it all back.
Watching the balls stage themselves on each of the magnets and having them dump themselves all at once at the player adds a completely new dimension (a dimension of sight AND mind) to the game. The game will also perform the same ball staging trick during a multiball restart. *Note* This only will occur if the game knows that the powerball is in the gumball machine, so until either 3 balls are played, or powerball mania is played, a multiball start will be sequential.
But the 3rd magnet isn't just a one-trick-multiball-pony. During "The Spiral" mode, each of the 3 shots to the spiral loop is caught on a different magnet. Finally, 3 shots before a breakthrough makes sense! Super cool.
I didn't realize how big a project this had become. It went from me saying "Hey, Dave, wanna do another super low-pressure-take-your-time-and-have-fun-with-it playfield swap?" to me reaching out to a million pinsiders trying to figure out how to install the extra magnet stuff, and completely drowning Dave's basement in machine oil. Another special thanks to DumbAss for the opto piggy back board that worked flawlessly right from the get-go, and his sage advice and technical commentary that he was willing to provide even when he was on vacation with the family.
Anyway, here's some pics and videos:

This thread was really good and informative. But not enough handies or memes. I give it an 8.
Quoted from Betelgeuse:I just wanted to say thanks dmacy for taking the time to document the swap. I'm in the middle of a tear-down shop out on a TZ right now and your photos have helped me get some things back together correctly. Outstanding work too. Your attention to detail really shows.
You should see what kind of care and attention to detail he can show to your feet.
