The journey has begun for another swap that I’m excited to do. I had my own TZ years ago and it was restored by someone before so it needed nothing. Not my first wide body as having done a STTNG before but this one is certainly one of the mammoths.

It’s a Mirco TZ using the 3rd magnet version. Originally he was going to populate the magnet hole and work out getting the wiring done later. We may have a plug and play solution in the near future and hoping that if it comes to fruition, this will be the one that gets tested.

Will get new ramp, plastics and all common important parts replaced. He prefers incandescent bulbs so it will get them too.

Here’s the playfield ready to get started.

Here’s some of the end parts that need removed to get on the rotisserie.

Following...I always learn something from each of your threads.

Likewise! It’s great place to learn from others. I learn something new almost every day.

Quoted from dmacy:

It’s a Mirco TZ using the 3rd magnet version.

That's an early run original playfield. The lock insert is green! I have a TZ "in a tote" that is waiting for a restoration with a Mirco 3rd magnet version. If only I can find the time.

Quoted from dmacy:

Originally he was going to populate the magnet hole and work out getting the wiring done later. We may have a plug and play solution in the near future and hoping that if it comes to fruition, this will be the one that gets tested.

If your solution doesn't work out then I have a pass-through board that supports the use of a standard opto pair. The board provides the transmitter drive and switch matrix interface. I believe the hardware can be acquired from various merchants. I also have the 8 high power driver board but I am sure you have the experience to be able to install the TIP36C and heat sink on that board.

If you want to add support for the prototype/sample flasher board in the door panel I have the boards that support that. You will need to add the wiring to the harness.

Looking forward to following this restoration,I enjoyed the Taxi restoration you just finished !

This swap is actually being done for me! Hence why I reached out to you via PM right before the holidays regarding the pass through board. That’s exactly the solution we were banking on. If you have the time, I’d love the opportunity to order a populated board from you.

The high power driver board, like you said, is a non-issue because it’s super easy dropping in a transistor, and a diode or two. I’d be interested in your door panel flasher board as well, though.

Thanks!

#9 2 years ago

Aside for those following; while dmacy does the swap, I’ll be doing the cabinet work like installing radcals, new flipper buttons, speaker panel, and a CPR backglass along with other odds and ends. I won’t hijack the thread, but I’ll be sure to post about the final product once it’s all put together! I’m really excited about this one.

I am still unavailable to fulfill any order for another three weeks or so. I have travel (long haul - ~13 + ~2 hour flights) ahead of me and given the current circumstances of flights and cancellations I am hopeful that the backlog will have eased by the time it is my turn to travel. I don't want to get stuck with a canceled flight at the layover airport after getting off a long haul flight.

I am also sure that either you or dmacy will reach out if I forget. I have the boards in stock and they are both very small so they won't take much time to build (slipped in between build phases of the big boards). In the meantime feel free to post or PM if you have questions about wiring and such while planning the installation.

Thanks for responding Victor! Yes you were the one but we didn’t want to say anything unless you were ok with it. So this is awesome!

what is wrong with that playfield , doesn't look bad at all really good deep clean would bring that right back ?

You need a pawtograph QC sticker, kinda like the HEP, only better.

I told him that awhile back. That he needed a sticker that said "Inspected by Karolina". I should just print some up and send them to him.

Honestly, you’re right. I debated with myself many times if it needed a swap. Anyone who knows me and my collection knows that I’m a purist through and through. I almost never use LEDs, or ColorDMDs, and I genuinely prefer the “milky” look of the Diamond plated inserts. Ideally, I’d have preferred to have the original playfield sent out and professionally restored before being swapped in. I did this with my Whirlwind.

But after having my AFM playfield swapped with a Mirco (the original was too far gone to be restored), having a fresh brand new playfield is one concession I’m willing to make for games in my collection that are proverbially bolted to the proverbial floor. They play like butter, look just as good, and the rebuild makes me feel like it’s being future proofed for the generation ahead of me once I’m gone. Also, I wanted to make this game something special by adding in the 3rd magnet and door panel flashers. Might as well do that with a pre-drilled playfield.

#18 2 years ago

Well damn it. Now I feel like I need to step up my game on the Addams I traded this for. Thought I might have a few months. Sigh, OK over to virtuapin for a new cabinet.

#19 2 years ago

I have your old playfield mostly stripped lurch. Will be cool for you to see it redone.

Here’s top side posts for reference.

Out with the old!

Here’s the cool sample/early playfield run plugs used in the pops. They’re like the automotive Christmas trees/push pins and likely are as they have a slight bump on the top side.

We are on target. Sorry, that was bad. Using reinforced bracket at the small green target at back.

That's what my old Playfield had. I thought maybe somebody hacked it.

I did the clock and the slot targets with the reinforced targets. Had the bend the slot one a bit forward as it was launching the balls on return. My TZ's flippers are nice and powerful.

The people that to this restoration work, always amaze me. Once I take something apart,it usually never works again.

Dave is doing my EBD next. Can’t wait. Your work is amazing. Wish I had half your talent. Had to call Bill Disney to replace a Solenoid.

You won’t be disappointed. I have owned and still own a few “Macys” as we call them.

Seriously, thank you all for the kind words.

If they only knew the amount of parts that I don’t know where they go!

Well, I barely got started and there’s something pretty off. No big deal. Just use the handy kruzman clear kit and make a new hole. That’s really off or maybe being this is an early one, it is slightly different. But be aware if you’re doing this swap.

Showed the steps to make a new hole. Measure once and drill twice. I mean measure twice and drill twice. Never mind lol!

Next problem: one of the lamp board dimples were way out. Again, maybe an early run issue. Easy fix.

Started populating the booty side with parts dry and out of tumbler.

I have been asked how I organize parts after tumbling. I don’t know if this is the best way, but it’s how I’ve been doing it for a while.
