Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

Its a Blast for me to hear how others view the "Disney Magic".
If this interests anyone, take a peak at Luna Park, at Coney Island. There is also links for Dreamland as well at Bottom.
Plenty of videos too.
Disney took his ideas from here, and rides like 20,000 Leagues were around over 100 years ago!
Some of the personal rides are scary to even imagine!
https://www.heartofconeyisland.com/luna-park-coney-island.html
Ive ridden the an original Steeple Chase, has anyone else?

Some of the footage reminds me of Action Park in NJ. If you haven't seen this documentary yet... It's a must!!!

The director of this doc - Seth - is a huge pinball fan and league player in NYC! Nice to see him having success with this great doc.

It looks like fun. I would definitely go. If you know the consequences and choose to do it anyway you have no right to sue anyone. Take responsibility for your own actions.

#904 3 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

Did you hear, they took out the flying saucers too. I know a guy so old, he actually rode those.
[quoted image]

I remember going on the submarine in the mid sixties.

Wow!

Do you remember what it was like, ya geezer? When did you go?

Big Coney fan here...it's a shame most the great classic rides are gone but we still got The Cyclone and the BB Carousel. I would have loved to have gotten to ride the Steeplechase, or the other two famous coasters The Thunderbolt and the Tornado.

#906 3 years ago

Speaking of old, I'm feeling it today. Something's gotta give.

It wasn't the original, but Knott's Motorcycle Chase sure was fun while it lasted. Which wasn't very long.

Looks similar to the steeplechase. Were you strapped in?

#908 3 years ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Were you strapped in?

Barely. I guess they had a few people get hurt so they changed it to Soap Box Racers where you sat down inside till it finally went away.

The whole Roaring 20s area was a nod to places like Coney Island with a Parachute Jump and other retro attractions. It came to be in about 1975 celebrating the upcoming Bicentennial, but it's all but gone now.

#909 3 years ago

The Roaring 20s also featured The Corkscrew which was the first modern coaster with any inversions. I rode it so many times, I lost count. Really missed it when they took it out in the early 90s.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Smart. Pirates World in Dania, off Sheridan Blvd in Lauderdale had brought down the Coney Island Steeple Chase Ride.
I rode it in the early 70s, with my brother....Need to dig up the home movies.

I remembered being scared like nothing else! I loved roller coasters!
But this was a Loose horse with a worn loose leather belt strap and me hanging on to dear life.
It was so fast and wobbly, I would fall to the side of the horse, and nearly lost my Head!

Memories of Disney being built as well, but more so Universal Studios, as I had a store across the street, and my Brother
was lead construction/contract attorney.
I sure wish I had taken pictures, (which werent allowed), but every couple days, Id walk the studios from ground clearing
to construction. Through my brother, I run into the heads of Disney and Universal, and made friends and enemies with the likes of Tom Williams and Family, Gary Shaken in Merchandising, Robert Earl from Hard Rock.
Seems like Yesterday!

Wow! How interesting - did your brother have any dealings with Roy back then?

Wow that's amazing. I heard rumors that the ride went down to Florida but had never seen any evidence it actually operated. I believe it got sent BACK to Coney in the 1970s as one of the ride operators there had hopes of resurrecting it but it never happened.

Quoted from Methos:

I started working with Disney in 1975, Same a same as my brother. I was in the Bicentennial Parade, and he hopped around from 20,000 Leagues, to Parade control.
When he went back as Lead attorney, in 1988 to Universal, He played Indiana Jones in the Stunt Spectacular the first year for a few months, as his contract work slowed, and he wanted to have fun. We tease him about it often.
In 1991 to to Disney, Roy was long gone. He did Televison Production for Disney running the dept, I believe.

I went to a few of the "upper management" Parties, but never fit in with the suits.

Yeah, I heard that too. Pirates world had an auction, and I think that made the news.
Likely in a Warehouse in Brooklyn somewhere.

Heres a vid of it running at Pirates World:

Another Florida Park was Marco Polo World.....Any Disney Fans visit that in the 70s?

I think I stayed in a condo by the ruins of Marco Polo park about 12 years ago. Lots of Asian miniatures overgrown like dwarven ruins

The last existing orange groves in orange county are existing trees in backyards like mine. So come and yank them out at your own risk.

Yeah that picture of an orange tree will get you banned for good I think.

That's pretty cool I wish I had an orange tree.

#920 3 years ago

Everybody else seems more enthused with the grapefruit tree I planted in the front yard. Or the retired dude across the street that thinks he can win the battle of the weeds. I'd like to know the over and under on when he gives up.

#921 3 years ago

Still room for more Disney or people from Utah's fantasies right here. Or even Jersey or other shores I am yet to explore.

I love citrus trees ....My father moved to Fullerton in 1956 ...even ran for office as an OC Republican in the 60s
My brother and I were born in LA. County. Mothers family is all from there. I moved back to Glendale in the early 90s. I still love Southern California. I may move back one day yet again.

#923 3 years ago

Fullerton, where's that? We can't build an amusement park there.

Or, my dad voted for your dad, and they're both probably rolling over somewhere now.

So I’m already pissed and ready to leave. Not only are they assholes about the mask but the first person I see told me I can’t wear the neck gator and I had to buy some fucking paper mask. Fucking bullshit.

Bad day at Disney is better than a good day at work, at least you're on stuck on small world... yet

They must be selling masks with ears on them that you can have your name sewn on and all for the low low price of $99.95...no?

I was in Epcot Saturday for Festival of the Arts and we had a blast!

How are crowd levels? Only been there in Sept/Oct but might try spring in the next couple years.

Masks are a must, and they enforce it very well. Without their diligence on it, you wouldn't be in Disneyworld.

It’s fun. I just had gotten used to the gator and had it stretched where it didn’t bother me and you know I thing the mask is stupid and does absolutely nothing
But I love popcorn and they won’t let me eat popcorn as I walk.

Disney is usually a pretty expensive trip. Are you saying that you didn't look at any rules or information before going? The mask rules, and the changes in the food while walking rules have been broadcast fairly clearly. I'm not even planning a trip until after I have a vaccine, and I knew these ones.

They had to as everyone would be walking around stuffing a beer and turkey leg in their mouth with no mask on.

Look at the mask this way...forget Covid - it filters other dust and particles that can get into your lungs. Cleaners and other carcinogens that run rampart through a theme park. It's all good.

To Disney's credit, they aren't charging an obscene amount for masks. Outside of the entrance, they sell disposable masks out of a vending machine for I believe $1 or $2. In the park they have fabric masks with characters and prints on them, but even those are less than $15. I know they are still making money on this stuff, without a doubt. But it doesn't seem like they are ripping people off as much as they probably could if they wanted to.

The line for this is 45 minutes. That’s not bad but I don’t think I have ever waited very long for this one
