    "Keeping the bastards honest".
    Don Chipp
    Former Leader, Australian Democrats
Used in TV and print election campaign advertising.

This is not how it looks to my American friends.

Don led a party in the Australian Senate, that looked to hold the balance of power in the upper house. This was their firm strategy, which Aussies embraced.
Our 2 major parties really didn't have enough seats in the upper house to guarantee passage of bills by themselves. Minor parties often had 1 or 2 seats, but under Don the Democrats could, just about always, give the government or the opposition bills passage.
Which could well have been abused, but wasn't really. The Democrats guaranteed the sitting government passage of bills, unless they had explicitly campaigned on a different stance. And, their stance could, and did, change. Dependant on what Aussies actually wanted.
So. He considered the Democrats job to be, "keeping the bastards honest".

“At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”

WWII, near Monte Casino with the Germans holding the high ground, these battles were some of toughest of the war for the Allies. During one particularly difficult moment, an American soldier yelled out a prayer: "Oh God, where are you? We really could use your help down here. And don't send Jesus, come down here yourself. This ain't no place for children."

"Here is what to do if you want to get a lift from a Vogon: forget it.
They are one of the most unpleasant races in the Galaxy. Not actually evil, but bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous.
They wouldn't even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders – signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters."
