Here we go. Played this when it was brand new back in 1986 at Golfland. During my junior year in high school
They made four versions. (Correction) Cabaret Cabinet, Upright Cabinet, Standard Moving Cabinet and the Deluxe Moving Cabinet. I think the Deluxe is the coolest of the bunch so thats what i'm working on.

The game is TRASHED! Its missing the rear spoiler and the dash has been destroyed. I collected some donor parts from a parted out Standard version that was in a bit better shape (pcbs, misc metal, dash, steering wheel, etc.) so hopefully i can get one nice machine put together and have spare parts.

This is what one million plays does to an OUTRUN.

Buckle up, this will be a rough ride

    Quoted from erak:

    Looking forward to seeing this.

    #13 8 years ago

Thanks! It's going to be a ton of work but it deserves a second life.

    Quoted from Jappie:

Wooo now that looks trashed... Good luck restoring this one!

    #36 8 years ago

It does not work. Yet. Need to rebuild the motors and assemblies.

    Quoted from TheCnyPinGuy:

    Wow
    Holy crap
    Does it play ???
    Always wanted a Rad Mobile
    Good luck on your resto

    #37 8 years ago

It was upgraded to a Turbo conversion kit - basically 3 stickers and some chips. It will be reconverted back to an original Outrun.

    Quoted from Jappie:

It sure does! This version of Outrun was in lots of arcades in southern Europe when I grew up. While spending my holiday money on pinball, this was the only vid I would occasionally put my money. in. Great game.
What's with the 'Turbo' on the side? Is that a sticker somebody put on? This is the original Outrun, right?

    #38 8 years ago

    Nope. Maybe some day.

    Quoted from Rob_G:

Pacman, have you ever done an Afterburner 2 motorized cabinet? My all time favorite video game!
    Rob

    #39 8 years ago

Nice! I may ask you for a couple dimensions down the road if you don't mind.

    Quoted from sparkup:

Looking forward to this. I have the same cabinet.

First pain in the... Gotta get this shifter out to replace it and remake the metal plates. The pin is STUCK like a mofo. Broke two pin punch tools and several drill bits had zero effect. Going to need to cut the shaft off and make a new piece here.

Steering wheels from this game and donor game. The one off the thrashed game is very slick (627,268 plays) and the other still has texture.

Thanks, i got a repro one around here somewhere.

    Quoted from fishbone:

Speaking of steering wheels, here's a scan of the insert (that's mostly broken or missing). Don't know if they are any reproductions available but in case there aren't, maybe this "early 2000's hi-res scan" can help making your own.

Crazy right? Probably more than that even. These were .75 a game for awhile.

    Quoted from Kerry_Richard:

WOW 627,000+ plays at .25 a game... it generated over $156,000 of income!

    #71 8 years ago

I know! I thought the Sega Space Harrier Deluxe had a lot of parts but this thing has way more.

    Quoted from flynnibus:

man... all that metal work would run me off! can't wait to see this one progress
Its stuff like this that makes you remember just how incredible these games were and how nuts they were putting these things together for just public toys!

Great job on the gear, that's not going to break anytime soon

    Quoted from HarrieD:

Busy with an outrun cabaret myself. Had to recreate the big gear in the steering mech because it was completely broken.
Much respect for your project man, if I see how much work this must be I would think twice honestly. Will track this thread, keep them foto's coming.

Yep, hand sanded, its too curvy and detailed to use anything mechanical on it. Yes. Sanded, then primed, then sanded again - its the only way to really see what was missed the first time around.

    Quoted from flynnibus:

What was your tool for all that body sanding? Looks like a lot that would have to be hand sanded!
Did you sand it all down before primer too?
My arms are sore just thinking about this...

    #95 8 years ago

Everything depends on condition. The moving cabinets are pretty rare - that's why I grabbed this one out of a barn. It's trashed but I've never seen one for sale in the U.S. before.

    #99 8 years ago

    Thanks! Of the Deluxe version?

    Quoted from jpinb:

I have 2 control panels from out runners if you can use any parts.

    #104 8 years ago

Yeah, I'll PM you, we can work something out.

    Quoted from OutRun86:

Hi, I'm currently restoring an upright and was wondering if you would part with that slick steering wheel? My outrun has a non SEGA wheel on it. I have a spare shifter if you want it?
    Thanks Sean

    #105 8 years ago

Yes I have actually - I love your website!!

    Quoted from OutRun86:

Amazing work on the plastics, those primed pics look so smooth. You may of come across my OutRun86 blog being interested in OutRun but if not there are some nice pics in the Gallery section of deluxe machines. Can wait to see how this turns out.

"pop a rivet over replacing waterlogged cabinets"

    LOL!

    EXACTLY!

    Quoted from jwilson:

Just wanted to say I love your arcade restorations and I think those numbskulls over at KLOV who pop a rivet over replacing waterlogged cabinets are crazy bananas.
I mean, not to use a cargument or anything but you can buy complete '69 Camaro body shells and mount all brand new parts on them, and no one says it's not a restoration.
Keep up the awesome work, I can't imagine there are many people taking arcade game restoration to this level.

    #122 8 years ago

Went with black for the pedal assembly. I know its not stock but whatever. I'll put anti-slip tread on them as well to keep them from wearing.

    #135 8 years ago

Well that was weird, everything went black and it said it was in the basement. I shall proceed.

    #136 8 years ago

Nice, I wonder how many survived.

    Quoted from Luzur:

A friend of mine own the Deluxe cab too (originally it was me that bought it first to save it from being junked when the local arcade closed down here, but he bought it from me on the way home ) and its a fun game.
I will forward this thread to him.

Thanks, i'll know pretty soon as it gets put back together. I may need a decent looking dash but i want to see if the spare one i have will polish out first. Besides that my shifter plate is destroyed. Cutting a new one next week. Probably print the graphics right on to an aluminum plate the clear coat it.

    Time to paint!

    I only use auto paints.
I learned awhile back the hard way that using non auto clear on white paint will YELLOW it.

Not pictured is the grey paint. I was going to just use the silver paint (wheels) for the seat too but decided to keep the seat color the same as the original.

    Yes it all got blasted!

Yes, some body work - nothing major though luckily. My Space Harrier was another story.

    Quoted from flynnibus:

Did you have the base all media blasted or something? And body work? That was the part that looked most tattered to me and it looks fab now!

    #147 8 years ago

Just posted up the 2 Space Harrier DX's I'm restoring. They are pretty similar under the hood.

No no no, I'm not that fast, this has been about 3 weeks into the Outrun. And even that is much quicker than usual. It's getting my full attention right now because it's taking up a good chunk of my workspace. Not only that, having all the parts I need (mostly) expedites the process even more.

    #151 8 years ago

Also, working on the two Space Harriers previously helped quite a bit. The metal, electronics and mechanics are very similar. The first Harrier took about 8 months, the second about 2 months. The first one took so long because I had to make over a dozen art pieces and track down very specific materials.

I have a local shop do the powder coating. I'll invite you down when my shops not such a mess

    Quoted from Buzz:

Wow!!! So glad you are still posting. Amazing as always. Do you do your own powder coating or take it somewhere? Looks like you are a expert sprayer. I would love to take a tour of your shop someday and see in person all the amazing restores you have accomplished.

    #166 8 years ago

$100 bucks! Dang you stole that thing. The steering wheel alone is worth that much.

    Quoted from Luzur:

Found a pic of the Outrun i bought (taken right before my friend , whos playing it, bought from me right there on the spot LOL), i bought it, Sega Shooting Master and Virtua Cop 2 arcade for 100 USD each (they went cheap since it was either buy them or the park personnel would haul them all to the scrapyard the following monday).

    Quoted from flynnibus:

Does clear hold up on these fiberglass pieces? Vs the gel finish I assumed they started with?

    #182 8 years ago

I may offer this service full time but we'll see. I've got another 25-30 vids and 5-6 pins out of my own collection to restore first.

I had my sights on a Hang On Dx locally but waited too long and missed it.

    Quoted from Shaneus:

I was going to say, but even doing it to this point in only three weeks is a testament to your efficiency. If only you could do this full-time and bring back the countless left-for-dead arcade machines that must be floating around!

Check out the other coin door. I thought maybe the reject levers were added on later but they are original. You can see where the metal is cut to fit them exactly. The top red buttons are fixed into place and don't push in. Also inside it has the exact same wire harness with no hacks.

    Quoted from LTG:

Maybe where it was built, Japan or California ?
Some of my big Sega pieces came from Japan. I'd rather pay the air freight rather than wait for the ones built here.
    LTG : )

Interesting. What big Sega games have you run across?

    #311 7 years ago
    Quoted from LateCenturyMods:

It was normal for Sega pieces to be either from USA or Japan factories, and this is a variant I have seen before.
I love the simplicity of the two casters on two ramps, giving a combination of rolling and swaying motion.
If you want this piece to look utterly original, the pedals should be nickel plated (as I recall). Otherwise the player can't see the pedals very well against the black footwell...

I see. Thanks for the clarification. I've never seen it before on any Sega I've worked on.

Yeah, I thought about nickel but it wears pretty fast. Also I'm going to put anti-slip
tape on there anyway so it would have hidden the beautiful nickel finish. Anyway, when you're driving you ain't looking at your feet.

    Good strategy LTG!

    Quoted from LTG:

Ones I operated in my arcade. Ride On Hang On, Outrun - ( moving, not deluxe ) Thunderblade sitdown, Enduro Racer Ride On, Sitdown ( ride ) Afterburner, F355 Challenge, Virtua Racer ( huge sit down one ).
Every one of these came from Japan. I accepted the air freight so I'd have them quicker than by boat or made in USA.

90% are for my collection. Every now and then i restore an extra game for a friend. Sometimes i sell games, but not very often.

    Quoted from PAPPYBALL:

So Pacman, all these projects, are they for your own collection or do you sell them? (or both)

    #323 7 years ago

    Great story!

I played an Outrun DX when it first came out. I was around 15. It was at Golfland in Escondido, CA. It actually felt like i was driving. Sorta. I never in my wildest dreams thought that i'd actually own any these things.

    Quoted from sohchx:

Ever since 1986 at the age of 9, I had always said that one day I would own an Outrun machine. I put more money in this game than any other as a kid so it was always my #1 grail machine. I found mine on CL way back when the site first started and have had it since. I'll probably be buried in it lol. I would love the moving cockpit but it's to large to fit into my house.

    #324 7 years ago

I forgot to add, i will be selling another Space Harrier Deluxe moving game. The restoration is nearly complete. It won't be cheap though.

But... i think its UGLY so i don't want to use it.

    #359 7 years ago

Instead i was thinking of using a black background in those areas with a red SEGA logo.
Maybe even stick a light behind it.

Yikes, that red is horribly distorted on Pinside.

    #361 7 years ago

    What do you think?

    #364 7 years ago

Also, the blue and black are screen printed with metallic ink. Not really worth it to go that route. And what would the pricing inserts look like or say?

    #367 7 years ago

Thanks for the feedback guys. Going to go with the back lit SEGA logo.
It will also have a clear plate over the top like the original.

Sorta. A friend sent his game to me and paid me to restore it.

    Quoted from PAPPYBALL:

    Did you sell it?

    #382 7 years ago

Why thank you sir! Hope you love it as much as i loved restoring it!

    Quoted from Latinfantom:

Pacman my friend....there truly are no words for your quality of work on this. I am beyond excited to add this to my collection and she will go right where she belongs - right beside the other masterpiece you restored - my Space Harrier Deluxe cockpit. This will complete my arcade and will undoubtedly be a focal point to the collection. I have been watching this develop with each of your posts in this thread in awe and amazement. I've only done a handful for other people so far and only if they had the same game title I was currently working on. I have about 20-30 games I'm wrapping up for my collection and then I may take on other projects.

    Quoted from Reality_Studio:
