Passed on Foo Fighters LE, so I had to make it up to myself somehow.

I love the thought process. At the end of the day, a guitar is a way better purchase. It will give way more back to you than a pinball machine.

Totally. And like 1/10th of the pinball machine cost.

Awesome. I have one from 2004. Didn’t realize what I had! This is definitely the 5 pound model.

Just finished building a Fender Champ clone last night...sounds amazing!
I'm stuffing it in to a Pignose Hog 20 cab that I wasn't using...I'll post pics of the finished combo soon.
I built two 50 watt Marshall clones about 12 years ago. I'm planning on making some more amps - it's a good complementary hobby to pinball, good soldering practice. Fun to build anything that flips or rocks!

Anyone here interested in a Gibson 83' Explorer w/ the Khaler trem & original hardshell?
I have an Iron Maiden coming in May and I'm trying to move some stuff I've had for too long.
I'm not much of a guitar player and my Basses are my main focus.

What color? Those are all over the place in terms of value

It’s the solid Silver/Gray. Let me find some pics.

Neighbor was tossing this guitar in the trash. Picked it up, plugged it in and started playing. Changed the 9 volt battery and tried it the effects, which all work.
It's a Kay Effector.

I'm fully addicted to The Warning. Just bought tix to see them at the Stone Pony in August. They have two dates opening for GNR this summer too. 3 sisters from Mexico that have been playing rock for 10 years and the youngest is just 18! Ridiculously talented. Not just guitar but the bassist and drummer are ridiculous. Best power trio around.

How the drummer sings and plays like this. Phenomenal.

Lifetime Gibson+Marshall guy here.

2 of the half stacks are gone and I recently got a Origin 20 that I really like!

Damn that is some good shit. When I see young people rocking like that, I get a feeling inside that there is actually some hope for the world.

holy shit the bass player looks exactly like my wife! They're even from the same area her family is from! Hm, I'll need to subtly suggest she start rocking this haircut again! LOL

This is great! I'm doing an EP in a few months, polishing up the songs, and this is like 1000 times more rocking! awesome

Looks like there is a Stern branded Gibson Les Paul with ZY Foo Fighters art at SDCC on display! Pinball and guitars! Anyone there and can get a better pic? Would’ve been slightly cooler if they did this on a DG-335 but I get why they wouldn’t.

Can’t tell if that is just a decal slapped on or a legit Gibson Promo guitar.

It’s probably a legit promo guitar. Gibson will do that for you if the price is right…
There is a neat Yahoo! one on reverb right now https://reverb.com/item/70342415-gibson-les-paul-2001-custom-shop?bk=

Right, Gibson has made a bunch of promo guitars over the years. Some better than others, the Fruit of the Loom one always makes me chuckle:

A few months ago I learned that my 8yo niece likes to play instruments and would love to have a guitar to learn on. Me not knowing anything really about guitars thought it'd be a neat thing to fix up an old electric and amp to give her for her birthday, and for me to learn something new.

I bought a Squier mini and 10W practice amp on goodwill.com for $56. It was pretty clean, and as far as I could tell worked ok. I plugged it on to the amp, and tapped the separate pickups that coincided with the 5-way switch. The tone and volume knob also seemed to work too.

I asked her father what her favorite color was planning to paint it in that color. Tarheel blue base with a few coats of 2PAC.

We also got her a gig bag, picks, cable, clip on tuner, extra strings, string winder...

After I assembled everything, and set it up I brought it down to a local guitar shop to have someone look it over, and play it to see if I missed anything (I don't know how to play it). The owner jammed on it for about 10 minutes, and I was surprised how good it sounded. He said I did a great setup on it, and that the paint job I did would cost 3x the value of the whole guitar.

Gave it to her last weekend at her party, and she absolutely loved it! Just learned yesterday that her parents are going to get her lessons.

I planted the seed. I'm anxious to see how it grows!

That looks fantastic. You did a great job. I'm sure she will cherish that.

Nice work! As I am reading it I was thinking, getting it set up right when it all goes back together will be key, and you nailed it. As far as electric guitars go, those cheap ones are fine, as long as they are set up nicely. No reason to spend big bucks for someone just starting out. You plug them in, crank them up, and play. If you were to hand that to EVH and he played it, it would sound like EVH! I hope she takes it up and starts cranking out tunes, you never know what talent is hidden away in the youth.

I'm hoping she takes it somewhere, even if only to learn the basics of playing a guitar. It's something she can have for life.

I had so much fun fixing this up for her I'm looking for another to do.

It's been a while since I posted in this thread. I've had a Gibson Custom Shop F-Style mandolin on order for two years now. I've been more than a little bummed out about the wait.

A week ago I came across a smoking deal on a Fender Kingman bass for a couple of hundred off list, straight from Fender. That has boosted my spirits some! It sounds good acoustically, but also has a Fishman preamp with tuner, frequency, and phase controls. It's something a little off the beaten path to keep things interesting while I wait on my mandolin.

New guitar day! I've been eyeballing these for a couple years now. Got a decent deal on a used one. Godin nylon string with the synth out. I also bought a cheap synth pedal. I'll probably use the synth for a half hour and never touch it again, but in 30 years of playing guitar I've never owned a nylon string or a guitar synth. I thought the nut was going to be more narrow like a steel string, it feels like the typical classical spacing. It's a little uncomfortable in my hands, maybe I will learn to like it. It sounds great plugged in. Synth cable won't be here until Monday.

Great guitar! I've used a guitar synth with a hex pickup or graphtech piezo for about 20 years now. It can't replace a real instrument, but it adds a little flavor if you dial things in here and there. LOTS of people you'd be shocked to hear use one. Pat Methany obviously, but also Steves Morse, Vai, Howe. Al Di Meola. Not Alan Holdsworth (well, not technically)

Nice guitar indeed! I've had a Godin xtsa for a while and its been a fun one to play. Even run through a typical rig its a great sounding guitar and a comfort to play. I ran one into a GR55 synth unit for a while and got some impressive tones out of it. It was fun for the more esoteric things.

I'm a huge fan of "cheap" guitars because they're fun to work on and basically guilt-free.

This began life as a Squier Strat and has had most of the parts replaced on it. I've had this guitar for about 20 years and play the heck out of it. Sometimes all you need is just a good strat sound.

2007ish Epi les paul. I mostly use this for slide work, but the Bigsby can be fun. This has your typical burstbucker setup.

Brian Setzer Gretsch G6120 Hot Rod. This is my go-to for anything that needs that 90s rhythm semi-clean/crunch tone. These guitars are mostly showcased doing your Setzer style music, but they respond to gain really well and the filtertron pickups can really sit well in a mix. This one is a joy to play. This guitar alone has caused me to start replacing all of my other guitar tuners with sperzel locking ones.

Regarding effects, I tend to switch between a road case with a remote switching system and a pedalboard I built that is based on the Schmidt Array series boards (with integrated switching/FX loops). The rack switchers run a typical Voodoo Lab GCX switching system.

Some of the stuff in the racks: JHS Charlie Brown, Digitech Whammy, Strymon Timeline, Strymon Iridium, Boss BD-2, Boss CS-2, Boss DD-20, Boss RT-20, Big Muff, Diamond Comp, Boss RV-5, custom transparent overdrive, TU-2. Basically a hodge podge of stuff, but it allows me to dial in a range of tones and the delays stack really well.

Here's what all of that mess sounds like. (Portrait video due to previously being posted to Instagram)

Recently I started venturing into the Fractal Audio stuff. I've always been a die hard "must have an amp" guy. But seeing more and more artists use them, I've been tinkering with the Axe FX III. I must say, the sounds I've been able to get out of it have been absolutely impressive and the support is top notch.

(Yeah, its in a server rack next to my desk, this thing is great for noodling!)

Godin definitely makes a decent guitar for the money. I've had the steel string acoustic for awhile. I don't play a ton of acoustic anymore, I don't have the hand strength to make it through a 40 song cover set without major pain playing only acoustic. The Godin has saved me, even swapping for a handful of songs to get a rest.

The AXE-FX III is an amazing tool. I haven't used an amp in years. Axe-FX is on my desk and I gig with the FM3. It sounds exactly the same in every single room. No more dancing with pedalboards. I've been going back and forth between rack mounted multi effects and amp with a pedalboard since the 90's. I can't see myself going to an amp again, unless someone else is carrying it.

I've downsized my gigs to a 1X12 combo, pedalboard, and guitar. My pedalboard is still huge, that's my pain in the ass at the moment

Woo that Gretsch is killer!

I moved away from an amp a few years ago - I was using the COSM modeling Roland VG-8 for the longest time, which got GREAT tones through an amp, then upgraded to the VG-99. The VG-8 uses the hex pickup and it’s still the best modeler I’ve ever had, because it models the guitar mass, pickups, positioning as well as the amp.

Now I’m using a Line6 Helix which is so powerful I can get everything I need from one or two patches, and just rolling off the volume for cleaner tones. Great level of control without having to do the tap dancing. Just amazing.

Well, I decided this May to buy my first guitar. Had no idea how to play, but had played drums in my teens, so I figured that was a good start! For reference, I'm in my mid 50s.

Ended up with this (Guitar Center) Mitchell acoustic-electric. T333CE-BST

I'm loving the journey so far, even if my fingers and I are fighting. I've almost got the basic starter chords down (Gmaj, Cmaj, Emaj, Dmaj, Amin - I think those are the right names...)

Much like pinball, I can see my one multiplying! I'm already looking for an electric.

Anyway, that's my story, and my new obsession.

Usually you would take in the A major before the A minor, to go with the others. Then move on to the minors. Might as well bite the bullet and try Fmaj while you are at it

#1391 8 months ago

A minor is a lot easier to play than A for a new player. I think my first three open chords were E minor, A minor, and C major. @RonSS, if you’ve got G, C, and D major down, there are literally hundreds of songs to play!

#1392 8 months ago

So I just checked, Am and Em.

I wouldn't say I have those 5 conquered with smooth transitions, but every day they get better.

Yes, I'm excited to start playing along with songs now. Maybe at half speed for a while.

To this day it's the number 1 thing I check before buying a guitar. Can I play Bm cleanly? Can I play Fmaj easily? If so, the neck shape/fretboard radius are good for me.

The worst is when they want the beginners to make that Fmaj chord with just the top 4 strings, that is nasty! I hate doing that one even after 20 years of playing.

You’ll get to the bar chords eventually, at first is seems impossible, but soon it gets easy, then you’ll be off and running!

ha! My go-to F chord is an inversion like that with the C on the bottom. Top 5 strings sometimes I let the high E ring out and sometimes mute it. FM7/C according to the google. Love that sound

I was a guitar teacher for over 10 years and I will politely disagree. I find that voicing perfectly acceptable. Do you hate the 4 string D chord? That F is a nice intro to what a bar is without being too difficult. I find myself using only the top 4 strings for partial bar chords up higher on the neck a lot when the other guitar player is hammering open chords or low bar chords. Bass guitar and rhythm guitar are more than covering those low notes. All depends what sound you are going for.

No, don’t hate it, the chord itself is great as far as the sound. It’s playing it that’s the hard part. This way, that is.

Although I guess it’s more logical to just finger the entire bar chord and then just hit the top 4 strings, that’s easy.

Just buy a tenor guitar. They've been around for years and only have the top four strings.
One of the Kingston Trio members played a tenor guitar (shown at left in the picture below).
