    It's a room, not a cave.

    Quoted from TomGWI:

It's only implied if you if you think it is.
The word ManCave doesn't exactly say "No Woman Allowed"
I think people are too sensitive nowadays.
If someone doesn't like that I call my Basement a ManCave then they don't have to set foot in it.
If I call it my BatCave, and Batman gets upset, well, then he doesn't have to come over either. We definitely won't want Batman to get upset.

There is a difference between being upset or offended and just thinking it sounds F'in stupid. Now go practice some Jack•bot.

I was tired of it when I walked into hobby stores and there's a whole aisle dedicated to metal signs that say "Man Cave," "Man Cave Rules," "No Women Allowed," etc. Now, I really don't care what you call your arcade or basement, or if you're trying to actually keep women out or not, but it gets aggravating when I'm looking for pinball/arcade signs and every single one available doesn't work for me. (Mostly because I want nice décor, not because of the sexist implications or whatever. I'm fully aware that I am a female in a man dominated hobby.) I also don't want/need a "Woman Cave" sign, I just want there to be pinball artwork available without having to custom make something.

Besides, people who know me know that our basement full of 7 pins is mostly because of me.

    #104 3 years ago

I actually refer to my game-room as "The Pinball Cave." That term fits well as it is actually a dark narrow room that was originally a "cool dry place" for storage. I painted it dark grey and lighted with neon signs and pinball machines.

    #105 3 years ago

I like the term Man Cave. Its a good description. Womans Nest would be the other
    side of the coin.

The room where my pinball/vid collection started is covered in that fake (but realistic
looking) stone that was popular in the 1970's. So it at least fits the Man Cave
    description perfectly.

I dislike it because the use of "man" before "cave" is totally unnecessary, as there are no "girl caves". Oh wait....

    That's 1/2 the fun though

The fact that term originates from men are from mars women are from venus, makes this whole debate hilarious. People get offended by anything, even lighthearted relationship books are too controversial these days.

That's good. I'd also be okay with "immature regression zone"

    Quoted from xTheBlackKnightx:

I have a "man house", does that count?
    A "den" is too small.
It might be polarizing, but I really don't care.
I also have been married or remain with people that can "tolerate" my eclectic hobbies and my preference of wearing closed sandals.
Life is more than pinball, and you have to be who YOU ARE, not what somebody else wants you to be.
I learned this two decades ago.

Closed sandals!!!! What's the world coming too?

Who's offended? It just sounds idiotic. So "Men are from Mars" would be a perfectly logical place for it to have originated! I always figured that Tim Allen cooked it up in a standup routine between "hilarious" bouts of grunting.

Yup, filmed that quite a few times. That's stock glass though, not sure about invisiglass.

I know a dude that calls his basement the "Testosteroom."

    Yeah that sounds pretty nasty

Man-cave= old & stupid. Needs to be freshened up. As such, I hereby declare that the space in my house where I keep an abundance of cool shit is now formally known as: The Carbidingulator

    #119 3 years ago

I'm going to call my the HisHerCave.

No wait. The room formally known as the ManCave.

    Perfect!

This is actually common these days. It's all "bro!" this and "Testosteroom" that.

Then he probably goes down with his crafts and glues dolls all over his games

Man Cave is one of my least favourite phrases. The worst. No real rational reason other than the fact that I am a woman who loves pinball (and a lot of other so-called male pursuits). It is annoying and exclusionary. I wouldn't call it a "Mom Cave" either. Ugh. I wouldn't say it was offensive though, just one of the many
words and phrases I hate for no legitimate reason.

    #126 3 years ago

We call ours the laundry room, because that's what it is, it just also happens to hold 3 pinball machines, a mini virtual pin and a mini arcade machine. Man cave as a term, I can take it or leave it doesn't bother me.

    #127 3 years ago

Whatever the room is called, I need it to have a big flashing red neon "DON'T TALK TO ME RIGHT NOW" light when I'm on a game. I was in the middle of an epic multiball stack when my wife decided to stand 3 inches from my left hand and tell me that the cats had gotten into a fight next door. This sign would also have a green "Okay, NOW you can talk" side; I'm not a complete bastard.

    #128 3 years ago

It insinuates guys are barbaric cave men with primitive skills and poor communication or social qualities in my opinion. I think I've got more class than that. Maybe I'm conceited. But I did manage to land a fantastic wife, so there is that.

I don't know if you do sir...you seem to have a very low opinion of cavemen

    #130 3 years ago

The term has nothing to do with cavemen. I mentioned earlier is was from a couples relationship book. If I remember correctly it was used in reference to explain that when men are upset emotionally you should leave them alone. It was a very general book. Basically said women want to talk and share and understand their feelings. Men on the other hand can be a like dragon in its cave protecting its gold. The book gave advice that women should not get all dolled up like a Knight on his horse and go galloping in to slay the dragon. Trying to solve the problem. If you man is in his cave trying to engage is stepping into the mouth of the dragon and will get you roasted, just give him a little time and space and wait for him to relax and come out. That is the origin of Man Cave, it was a reference to men hiding in their cave emotionally when they need space. It was actually meant as romantic princess, knights in armor reference to help women understand men. It just fits when referring to the place men go in the home when they need to relax or let off steam.

"I love being in my man cave!" sounds like "I love playing with my backdoor!" I'd be like, "this my house! /chest thump. Yeyuh."

Well, just look at the words... man... cave... It's a booty lol... That's why so much shit goes down in a man cave lol. If you have a man cave, doesn't it mean your house/cave already got reamed by the female? Lol

What the term "Man Cave" really implies is that it is the one room in the house where the man rules. It's not necessarily that women aren't welcome. It's just the place where the man gets to decorate it the way he see's fit without any interference from the women of the household. They have the rest of the house to decorate their way.

A man can have anything he wants in the man cave. Rock posters, beer signs, pictures of cars, bikini-clad babes, a leg lamp, etc. Basically the same kind of stuff he could have had before he got married.

A game room is not necessarily a man cave. If your wife or girlfriend has a say as to what goes into your "game room" then it isn't a man cave. It's a family room or game room. Not even close to being a man cave.

In a man cave the man rules.... period.

So all you girly-men who don't like the term "Man Cave" (or aren't allowed to have one) can go play pinball in your game rooms while us real men will hang out in our man caves (a lot of which just so happen to have some pinball machines in them too).

My man cave has all the stuff guys need. An awesome home theater/stereo system than can blow your face off. The kind with real big speakers that most women wouldn't allow in the rest of the house. It also has a bar and a kegerator. Both essential components of a real man cave. Then there are also a few pinball machines which are optional components of a man cave.

So all of you who hate the term "man cave" and think game rooms are man caves need to realize that your game rooms are not man caves unless the man rules them absolutely. Most are just game rooms and don't qualify as being real man caves.

    man cave (Definition)

A room, space, corner or area of a dwelling that is specifically reserved for a male person away from the rest of the household in order to work, play, involve himself in certain hobbies, activities without interruption. This area is decorated by the male that uses it without interference from any female influence.

Usage: Tom retreated to the Man Cave to drink beer and play his pinball machine with his friends from the office.

Glad this topic's been bumped back to the top! I agree with me from 10 months ago, Man Cave still sounds idiotic. But this "Womancave" thing might just have legs ...

'Woman's Lair' has a ring to it.

I call mine the living room because all my games are in the living room. My living room stuff is in the master bedroom.
