I recently (finally) managed to get my hands on a lotr in good condition.
The only issue was the Balrog motor is not working properly.

When I turn on the machine, the motor instantly starts spinning and it never stops.
The 2 balrog switches weren't registering but I fixed that (broken wire) and they now both register. That didn't fix the issue though.
When I opened up the relay, I noticed the relay switch (which causes the motor to turn the other way around) is never activated. When I activate it manually, the motor turns the other way but again it never stops.
During the relay switch test however, the switch works and the relay lets the motor turn the other way (maybe that switch only goes of when the balrog is supposed to swing? In that case, the issue that the motor just won't stop might be something else I'm missing).
I checked the fuses to be sure and there was one fuse broken but it was the ring magnet fuse so probably nothing to do with this issue.
Can't seem to figure out why there's never a 'stop' signal going to the motor and if it's a motor issue, relay issue or something else completely..
Does anyone have any great ideas about this issue? It keeps me up at night

I think the relay cares about which way the motor runs. Then the motor will run until the two switches trigger to tell the game that the balrog is now in home position. If those are broken and don't register, and the motor ran forever (I'm surprised the motor didn't burn out), then perhaps the transistor that runs the motor is shorted. Think of the motor running just like any other coil in the game firing. So I would be testing the driving transistor on your board next. Most likely that's the problem.

The motor starts running by Q22, the relay is only switching between forward and reverse. The relay is energized by Q20.
See manual page 21.

I think replacing Q22 probably solves the problem.

Thanks for the fast replies!
Think I understand the function of the relay part and motor part better now.
I found the corresponding transistors in the manual and on the board. Gonna check it out later tonight.
Hope that solves the issue

Q22 indeed measures faulty. Q20 seems fine.
I'll replace Q22 later this week and hope I've got a working Balrog again

1 week later

Finally got around to replacing the transistor and it solved the issue! Thnx for the help!
