Quoted from Zablon:Look at the price of pinball machines and ask why they would add something that doesn't add to gameplay but does add to cost?
Because today's gamers expect it.
Everything has badges and achievements now. Every Steam game comes with achievements, Xbox and PSN have their trophies, there's groups dedicated to platinuming a game (100% achievements), etc. A large part of gaming today is about showing off to everyone just what you've accomplished. Initials on a high score board don't cut it anymore, people want something they can post to socials, etc.
Stern is smart to do what they are doing. Sure, they could screw it up, but I'm pretty sure they understand they're still niche in the grand scheme of gaming and smart enough to avoid pissing off their customers.
