Quoted from mcubed:

Hello -
So, My Fireball will be here Thursday. I believe it's been converted to LED, but I'd prefer incandescent bulbs.
There are some posts on page 1 of this forum regarding bulb type and color, but a lot of it seemed subjective.
Does anyone know of a way to find exactly what bulb types / colors were in each socket, in both the playfield and backbox, in 1972?
Any info appreciated!
- Matt

My guess, (not to be an ass) would be just plain incandescent bulbs from 1972. With possibly a colored sleeve here or there.

I really thought I had already started posting in this thread. Age must be getting to me LOL. My buddy and I had picked up this Fireball within the last month. The game plays good considering the zipper flipper assembly had a coil meltdown at some point, and the pop bumpers had some serious burn/melt. As well as in the backbox a bell coil meltdown there also. I have the playfield removed and working through a complete zipper flipper rebuild and new coils in several locations. The top of the playfield is stripped for clearcoat and touch-ups. This was a German game and I realized that someone had painted over the German lettering on the playfield with English. I have linked a YouTube video I created concerning this paint removal. I'll post pictures as the project moves forward.

I got an initial coat of clear on the Fireball playfield. Then I frisketed and touched up the playfield with an airbrush. I'm probably going to go back and touch up the shooter lane. I will then re-clear a couple more coats before sanding and polishing.

Quoted from DanMarino:

epeabs That is looking great. Nice going. What are those red things you put in place of the buttons around the spinning disc? Getting the buttons removed from mine was a pain and I was worried I was going to break the plastic stems on the underside of the buttons.

Thank you. I 3d printed those "plugs" just to keep clearcoat out of the holes. Here is the 2nd approach for those. These will drop through the hole like the original rollover. Push them out from the bottom.

Final coat of clear on the Fireball playfield. Glad it doesn't have a ton of inserts. I had to fill each insert with clear from an eyedropper. It will definitely need extra time to cure, before sanding and buffing.

Finally had a chance today to get back into finish sanding and polishing my Fireball playfield. I'm very pleased with the end results. My touch-ups weren't perfect, but the overall improvement over what it was is night and day.

I agree! Looks sharp and they are the right shade too.
Also becoming a fan of the clear skirts as they do not to hide artwork that is under them in some cases.

I agree that the white didn't seem to fit. The yellow is a decent match and spiffs it up a bit.

Fireball assembly has come pretty full circle. The playfield is in the cabinet, the score reel faces have been cleaned. But as usual, you have to come across some issue, LOL. When toggling power on, the zipper flipper close coil energizes then resets, tap the left flipper button, the backbox illuminates. But when hitting the credit button, the zipper flipper close coil locks on. I'm still an extreme novice at reading schematics but I have looked at the open flippers relay, tilt relay, game over relay third ball relay, and the end of stroke switches for the zipper assembly and everything seems correct. Has anyone else run across this?

Quoted from DanMarino:

Your Fireball is looking great.
In case you didn’t know, it is normal for the back box lights to not come on until the left flipper button is pressed.

Thank you very much. I was aware of the left button turning on the lights, but the better part is that the issue I posted about I have solved. Somewhat of a novice move, but I had failed to install my mushroom bumpers due to the fact that I'm waiting for 7/16" ID Titan rings to show up. I was completely spacing the fact that those 3 mushroom bumper switches were in the closed position without the bumpers installed. So I installed the mushroom bumpers without rubbers, and at the moment everything is working smooth. Minor tweaking now with a couple switches and bulbs out.

Fireball is up and mostly playing. The issue at hand is the Wotan saucer which is not kicking the ball out. The Odin saucer works fine. If I have a ball locked in Odin, and then lock a ball in Wotan, a ball does not kick from the outhole into the shooter lane. If I trigger the Wotan mushroom bumper, the ball doesn't release from the Wotan saucer. I'm very much a novice when it comes to schematics. I have attached some pictures of the schematics so possibly someone may have a good direction to search.

Quoted from DanMarino:

I would start with easy stuff first.
1. Is the switch on the Wotan hole closed when the ball is in the saucer.
2. I would check the Wotan eject relay and make sure the switches are clean and adjusted properly.

#1. Yes
#2. Switches are clean and seem to be adjusted correctly

If I place a ball in the Wotan saucer and manually activate the Wotan eject relay, the saucer does kick the ball out.

Quoted from Garrett:

You may want to start a thread. MarkG and others are sure to chime in.

Thank you @Garrett, I may need to do that.

Quoted from vec-tor:

Warning:
Flipper coil wirings should be long.. the longer the wires the less stress and
fatigue to the flipper coil wires and reduce downtime. The constant back and forth
breaks the wires.

Thank you for the heads up. I have several spools of silicone wire that I had considered using due to flexibility.

Quoted from DanMarino:

Sounds like it's working then. What's the problem again?

It doesn't work on it's own. It does kick the ball out if I manually activate the relay with my finger. Seems like the signal isn't reaching the Wotan eject relay.

#564 3 months ago

Fireball has graduated to playing. I replaced the dead Wotan relay coil and the game is playing well.

Very nice job on that playfield! Looks fantastic!
Any chance of a gameplay video?

Thank you, @garrett. I'll see what I can do on a video.

I've got all the ball number lights working except ball three. Socket has been cleaned, but I don't have 6-ish volts when the bulb should be lit. I'll have to dig deeper in that.

My Zipper Flippers are now not closing upon hitting the blue mushroom bumper. Coil resistance on the close coil E-184-239 is 5.2 ohms which seems fairly low according to Clay's guide. When the blue mushroom is activated, the C.F. relay is energizing, but the flippers aren't pulling in. When one of the yellow mushroom bumpers is activated, the corresponding relay is activating, but the C.F. relay is not de-activating (it stays locked on). If I manually closed the flippers and they lock in place, activating a yellow mushroom will open the flippers. I'm not sure if the coil should be rewound or if that is not the issue at all.

#574 3 months ago
Quoted from DanMarino:

epeabs I'm not sure what the answer is. Would it be helpful for me to snap some photos of my coils for you and take measurements of voltages? I probably can't get to it until Thursday evening though.
I had a pretty good game last night on my Fireball. I had something like 48,000 points on ball 1 and ended up with 83,000 points after ball 5. I need to look at my zipper mechanism because my right flipper alignment seems to be a little droopy for some reason.

Thank you, but I got it fixed yesterday. It was the fuse holder for the Zipper Flipper close coil, it was junk. I have replaced it and all works well. To be safe, I'm going to replace all the fuse holders in the game.
Thats a good score for this game. Not sure if you mean your flipper is not at the same angle as the left or if the tip is drooping towards the playfield. If it is drooping towards the playfield, it could be a worn bushing. During my rebuild I installed new shaft bushings, but I also added a nylon washer under each flipper shaft to raise the flippers from the playfield.

I know I'm not alone when I say that my clear plastics were yellowed, dirty looking, and the Fire Gods plastic "ends" were both broken. If anyone is looking to get a set of new clear plastics, reach out Pinsider fingersport , he hooked me up with a full set of clear plastics for my game. He just ordered another batch and he would be happy to move some more out the door. Reasonably priced, shipped quick, and a pleasure to do business with. Bring your Fireball up a notch.

Here’s my droopy flipper.
[quoted image]

That brings a whole new meaning to the term droopy LOL. Unless you have loose allen bolt's holding the flipper shaft, my guess is Zipper Flipper mech may have some worn out bushings. Or, worn or broken shaft bushing.

Quoted from DanMarino:

Tightened my droopy flipper and had a good game.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

A loose allen screw will do it every time. Good game.

Quoted from DanMarino:

Any secret to replacing these Bally lamp sockets? Tonight I stopped after replacing one. What a pain to get the wires out of that V-groove on the lamp socket base and tab.

Do you have a desoldering gun? That would be the easiest way to do it. If not heat up the solder on the tab and push the braid away. As far as the wire going to the other side,
cut them, strip them and resolder to the new socket.

Quoted from DanMarino:

Whatever the bushing is called for the shooter rod has a bunch of slop on my Fireball. Does anyone know what the correct part number is for a replacement? I think I've tried to search before and ordered something that ended up being the wrong part. I'm having difficulty with the skill shot because the shooter rod bushing is so sloppy.

I just pulled mine apart quickly. Not sure, but mine does not have a bushing. It is metal on metal. Also confirmed that a Bally/Williams shooter rod bushing will not fit. If you mean the metal housing for the shooter rod, I would reach out to Steve at Pinball Resource.

I would get a new housing. And while you're at it, maybe a new rod. The end of my shooter rod, for now, I had to grind down because it was a massive mushroom on the end.
