    Quoted from dug:

70 mil to DH for 2024… wow

It’s nowhere near $70 million/yr, reports are that the majority of the money is deferred for anywhere from 20-30 years.

    #493 4 months ago

Ohtani is going to get $2 million a year for 10 years with $68 million deferred annually. It’s a $46 million annual hit to the luxury tax. The most team friendly deal in sports history.

    Quoted from puristish:

It's a tax play, as much as it's a "team-friendly" play. I'm sure tax accountants have been advising on the deal... if he's not living in LA after he retires, I'm sure there's ways to get out from under CA taxes.

As long as the Dodgers are still in LA, he’s not avoiding California state tax.

    Quoted from rwmech5:

What about after? Is it only where his primary residence is?

No it’s where the employer is located

    #502 4 months ago
    Quoted from o-din:

If he owns an expensive residence and sells it to leave the state, they now have a special tax for that too. Gotta keep the revenue going one way or another.

    Same thing Illinois

    Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

True, but only his home games are CA taxed. All the others are taxed dependent on where you play.

No, they are taxed additionally where there are state taxes. It’s known as the “jock tax”

    #505 4 months ago
    Quoted from puristish:

This is absolutely a tax play, well also helping the team avoid luxury tax.

How so? Deferred money is still taxed when you collect that money, he’s just kicking the can down the road, so to speak.
