Quoted from Cmartin1235:

I don't have a riveter but I do have a TIG torch. Does anybody know it TIG welding angle brackets to the back of the stainless steel strip will effect the mirrored finish?

Probably.

Maybe the most skilled TIGer could do it, but I know that it would distort the mirror finish if I tried it, lol

Same for spot welding I assume?

Even more so for spotwelding

Vid
I have a question.
So I ordered the 20ga mirror finish stainless from masters. It measures .030. I then measured the thickness of the guide on a Data East Secret Service and it is .048. I assume the ,030 wont work for this guide. So depending on the game or manufacturer, some difference can be expected. Right?

The easiest way is to just take the broken wireform up to the hardware store or welding shop and match it up.

Grab a handful of rod, the stuff is so cheap.

The stainless welding rod is already pretty nicely finished, but you can use some Green compound if you want it mirror.

I've seen 3 different size wire guides, and I'm sure there are more in the world.

I am referring to sheet metal guides not rod wire. I just wanted to see if .030 would work for .048 on this game. Also wanted to inform others that there might be different thickness out there.

Is it a structural part, or just guide to a chute?

Got a pic?

Here is the left side guide. Same material as the right side I am working with.

Looks like it has lots of backing, you can probably use the thinner stuff no problem.

I'm about to kick off my first attempt at this by making 7 new guides for my Gottlieb Spring Break. My old ones are too rusty and the plating is flaking off so they can't be saved.

I wasn't able to source #8 mirror finish locally, but I was able to get 4X 1" wide 36" long strips of #4 brushed finish stainless 20ga for about $40. I think I can buff it to get more shine if It seems too dull.

My question is, does anyone know if there is a nipper or punch tool out there with a square profile so I can reuse the original supports? Could I get away with using a round punch? (something like https://www.amazon.com/Capri-Tools-CP21050-21050-Puncher/dp/B00OM4GVX0/ref=sr_1_6)

Would something like this tool work? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002KRACO/ref=ewc_pr_img_2

So I picked up a nipper and a hole punch to try out. The nipper is a little wider and slightly more shallow than the notches on the original guide. That works out since my guides are 1/8” more narrow (height wise) than the original. The nipper also makes it easy to make the tapered ends of these guides. The nipper does leave sharp edges however, so I’m going to have to sand or file them down.

I also really like the hole punch over using a drill on sheet metal. No need to clamp and no worries of spinning sharp metal.

This was a surprisingly doable process. Thanks vid1900 for documenting this. I wouldn’t have thought to make new guides otherwise.

First time working on any of this, so sorry for the stupid questions:

Would this work to make clean cuts?
https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-5-plate-shear/t27429

Also how do you drill out the rivets, do you clamp the guide into a vise and use a hand drill? That would bend the the old guide flat where you clamp it...

Never tried it, but it looks like it has capacity to spare

Use the angle brackets and screw it down to your workbench

Use 3/16" sharp drill bit

there a vid guide for everything. Vid must be a vampire because he has way too many years of knowledge under his belt and maybe that is why he is mostly active at night...
Anyway, turn me into one too please.

Now seriously, great job.

sooooo, how do I do WIRE ball guides? I would like to replace the ones in my tron, they have lost their shine for whatever reason and would like to take them off and put new ones in... or should I take the existing ones and have them re-plated?

Have you tried tumbling them with some crushed walnut and flitz?

another great thread, thanks for the valuable information and time and effort vid1900

these and others would be great as a pdf documents

I have not. Dont really want to push them out unless I am ready and certain of a 100% trouble free outcome.

It scares me that
A- they wont in as nice, bend, scratch the pf when in/out
B- see A

Lol

Put some Frizt on a cotton rag and just polish them in place....

The rag will be jet black with oxidation, don't get it in your mouth or under your nails

I spent a better part of the afternoon making another ball guide for EBD. EBD only has the one for the left side bonus lane but it's long, over 20 inches. It has 4 L brackets and 2 threaded studs. For my first EBD restore over 10 years ago I bought the metal strips from Metal by the Inch online. There was a minimum order, so I think I ended up with 200 strips. I made 3 guides and now 3 more for my current games. The hardest part of this job is drilling the holes. The stainless is really hard, eats drill bits for breakfast LOL.

You need to make one more for me!

I can if you supply the old one for the L brackets.
