I'm trying to help a friend at a distance. He picked up this disco fever and has never seen it run. He doesn't even have a ball in it and I'm trying to decide if I need to have him bring it to me to go through. I don't know much, but I can tech my way through most problems.

My questions: What is the expected outcome of starting the machine without a ball in the drain? Is there a way to run any sort of self tests on this machine (or look for LEDs) or any other clues to tell us whether the machine is booting? Please keep in mind the machine has no ball. Is the no ball thing a trouble-shooting show stopper?

System 3's can be a pain. I will tell you it won't boot correctly without a good battery attached. I think you need a ball in the drain but can't say/remember for absolute sure. Is the 40 pin connector in good shape? Good luck.

If the game boots the leds should flash once then go out. If it fails to boot normally the LEDs are both on. You may get other random LED results that don't amount to anything useful.

Non-multiball Williams of that era will boot just fine with no ball.
There is no ball search routine at all in the programming.

Basically, if it boots then you get info on the displays of one type or another.
No boot means no displays. GI lights are not an indicator of CPU status, they are direct ac power and will come on even if there are no boards in the machine.
