Good suggestions so far. I do have to plug Grand Rapids, MI. This is THE place if you like craft breweries & gourmet bar food. The micro brew scene is pretty remarkable. Plus it's a cute, fairly walkable, & fun city with really great people and surprisingly good food. GR has it all: concerts, minor league hockey, even some decent pinball...
If you have time, drive 35 mins west to Grand Haven, which is my neighborhood and one of the most beautiful coastal towns in the country. I'm biased, but also completely right... Great place to get ice cream, walk the pier, and watch a Lake Michigan sunset.
