    Quoted from ultimategameroom:

Idiocracy is now in full effect. I went to a small beer festival last year. They had a local punk/ heavy metal band play thru the entire event. It was a real good time except for the handful of idiots who brought their children and let them run wild while they drank. One couple had a very young child in a stroller who cried and screamed for 2 hours nonstop. I think I’d probably scream and cry if exposed to a loud metal band while my parents drank all afternoon. I was talking loudly over the music and said to my wife what kind of parent would bring a rug monkey to an event like this? Another stranger nearby overheard me and said ones who don’t let their kids get in the way of their drinking!!!

That's been going on for a long time. Camping music festival two decades ago i pushed a stroller through grass for some wasted couple at like 3am who camped near us a long as walk from the music. I think i was coming down from doses and felt bad for the kid.

    Quoted from jrpinball:

I agree with you there. Kids don't belong in bars!

    Quoted from Ribs:

I hate kids, I rant to my partner about people bringing kids to bars and breweries, but there are a bunch of reasons why a kid might be obnoxious, loud, or unruly that I wouldn't want to touch with a million foot pole let alone a public scolding. Or they could just be excited about the thing I like, cool!

I remember my dad bringing me to the local bar while growing up. Also, I can think of at least a couple of breweries that have a little kids area, with puzzles and toys and such and almost every one of them I go to has high chairs and changing tables in the bathrooms (men's included). Especially if they serve food, they're public gathering places and that includes kids.

As some one who's in the thick of it, with a toddler daughter and infant son, we try to be aware of other customers. This means going to places early, having contingency plans on bailing out early, knowing how to set expectations, and having a plan for disciplining in a way that's not destructive (we're not ipad people, but I really sympathize with parents who are, though it really should be on silent). It works about 9 times out of 10, but I really feel bad for that tenth time, I feel bad for the people who get collateral damage of having to put up with it.

I wish other people didn't have to deal with it, but also, I can't just not take my kids into public until they're 15, and that includes restaurants, especially if I want to teach them how to behave in restaurants. I also think overly sheltered kids is how you get a kid who's ten at a restaurant acting like a three year old.

I don't think this is unique to my generation, but I do feel bad for other people who have to see it.

    #110 10 months ago

Man I have soooo no interest in this whole bitch fest, but real quick:

"physical reprimands" = "beat their own kids"

Come on dude. As someone who has had more than their fair share of both, I can tell you they are FAR and AWAY not the same thing. Fuck.

    Quoted from PinJim:

I think he’s saying use physical reprimands to control them? It works, and it teaches them to beat their own kids. Rinse and repeat.

    Quoted from Pincognito:

I've observed/experienced kids beating on arcade/pinballs like they owed them money. I cringe when seeing kids smash buttons, kicking legs/cabinet, or pound the glass. Makes my left eye twitch. So, if it's that sort of deal - I get it.

Which is why I rarely let adult pinheads play my home games ... only it is my right eye!

If you let them run and break the rules, someone will inevitably slip/ fall and possibly get hurt. Then you will hear from an attorney at the law firm Dewey Cheatem and Howe. Hell even if they don’t get hurt there’s a chance you may hear from an attorney for some BS reason. Little Sucy hit her head on a pinball machine. Now she has night terrors and is emotionally scared for life. Businesses today are targets with a big bullseye.

I’m on my phone right now so I’m having a hard time finding the source, but I’ve read that we’re actually LESS litigious than the founding fathers. They’d sue each other at the drop of a hat.

That doesn’t mean that people aren’t looking for a pay day. Having started my career in HR, I’ve seen employees, candidates and customers all try to initiate the process, usually by filing a complaint of some kind, probably hoping you are willing to pay them to stop, but they’re actually pretty easy to respond to. You just list out whatever controls you have in place, and send it back.

At this point, unless they have some damning evidence, no lawyer is going to take them on contingency, and in all honesty, people looking for a quick payday are usually not willing to pay a lawyer on a gamble, so everything dies at this stage. The laws that prevent ambulance chasers (opening them up for defendant’s legal expenses for frivolous suits) have actually worked pretty well.

There are exceptions, of course, which become news. But there’s a sampling bias there, as there is with the prevalence of violence. Things are actually better now, not worse, we just heard about the bad stuff.

Holy shit! I love pinball BECAUSE my Dad would take me to the bar in the 70's. In Illinois, most bars had pinballs and puck bowlers. It was all part of the street taxes. The heavies(mafia), that would pinch the operators, didn't ask bar owners if they would like machines, they were told they were getting them. They were asked how many would they like! It's not like it was abuse or he was an alcoholic, he enjoyed a Jack n Coke and pinball.

Same, except replace 70s with late 80s/early-90s.

I think by that point the heavies had been kicked out through various reforms, but having pinball machines was still the default in the chicagoland area, past the time it started declining in other areas. Playing those games when out with my dad is what got me to love pinball, and I want to recreate the experience for my kids (and that probably means breweries with pinball machines, since bars within city limits are no longer allowed to let minors in).

    Quoted from JakeFAttie:

lol, I hear you vdojaq! I think the real problem in the USA is the breakdown of the traditional family structure. Parents don't have enough help and support structure they need, plus they can't cook themselves, plus they probably live in a tiny apartment. They need to get out and get some relief but they can't so they drag their toddlers to a cafe or a movie or a pinball museum and ruin it for everyone else. Parents need grandparents and free quality childcare!

Give me a break…….free quality child care. That’s ridiculous. Stop looking for handouts.
If you’re a parent, do your job in public. They’re your kids. Simple as that.

yeah we should probably get rid of all these free public schools too! that's fucking socialism! Just homeschool 'em. If they don't behave or can't learn, beat the living shit out of 'em! Also give 'em guns and proper training to fight off the commies when Red Dawn comes. And they can work the coal mines until then.

Also let's get rid of libraries and fire departments. Parents can teach their kids to read, like they even need that. And if you're a good home owner, just put out your own fires. Simple as that.

have 3 kids 1 son 2 daughters, girls are 10 months apart Irish Twins girls are 32/31 and son 37,and we went everywhere together, at kid orientated places when we went to restaurants, adult places, I can't tell you how many "old people" would come up to me and my wife would tell us "how well our kids acted" while we were there.......if my kids got out of line all I had to do was just give them a LOOK and is stopped instantly, no back talk or crying....that's how my wife and I were raised and we just passed it down......we were NOT their friends we were their parents......

I care a lot more that so many of the games are hot garbage. Especially the EMs. It's no wonder that people who don't have exposure to well maintained games think EMs are terrible when that's their exposure.

    Some clarifications on our policies.

Running is never allowed. Also, no "wheelie shoes". Our polished concrete floor is very slippery. If your child runs, we give them ONE nice polite "Hey kiddo! NO running!" warning. Second warning is in a loud firm voice, some have called it yelling. "NO RUNNING This is your last warning!" There is no third warning. Guest is escorted out.

Screaming is very unpleasant. We do not allow it AFTER A POINT. We never speak to a parent for an occasional "Woop Woop!". In order to be actionable, screaming must meet ALL THREE TESTS. It must be LOUD, CONTINOUS, and HIGH PITCHED. Laughter and joy noises are encouraged as these are not brain rattling or rude. Again, a first warning, a second more firm warning, then out the door. We refuse to let the lack of discipline of the few ruin the visit of the many.

We also tell people who got baked in their car and then walked right in our front door that they smell bad and that they need to go outside and air out. We also will spray them with Frebreeze if they want. This policy also applies to people who enter smoking, or those who have shit or pissed themselves.

Picking up the machine, smacking the glass, hanging on the guns, spinning the steering wheels, or putting an infant on the playfield glass is grounds for a "No second chance" immediate kickout.

We have had training on how to handle Autistic, Handicapped, or other special needs children and adults. We all have professional grade Motorola radios and a system or color coded threat levels. Every inch of our facility and parking lot is covered with a high resolution video system.

Our goal on any event that becomes a problem is to de-escalate, or as we call it, "Being Sheriff Andy, never Barney Fife." Any attendant who is flustered or angry can be TAGGED OUT by another team member, who will then take over.

Please also try and understand that those of you who VISIT do not realize what a HUGE amount of people come through our doors in a week. In a sample that large, any fractional part of one percent will seem like a parade of people complaining about unfair treatment.

In closing, I just want to point out that our customer satisfaction glass is 99.9 percent FULL, not .1 percent empty. I have been in this same business for over 50 years now and since Covid there has been a REAL change in the way the public acts in ALL common places. We have, and will continue to adapt quickly and professionally to those who CHOOSE to violate simple safety and customer comfort rules, but we will also not allow our museum to slide into anarchy.

I don’t think you should feel bad for that tenth time. That goes with the territory of the nine times they elevate strangers’ spirits when they’re being adorable.

The only thing that ever irks me is when parents ignore the cues the kids are giving. If babies are fussy, it’s because they’re hungry, tired, sitting in a dirty diaper or overstimulated. Toddlers roughly the same except for diapers. As long as parents are trying to address the underlying issue instead expecting them to have learned Eton etiquette through yelling or physical pain, I’m usually just glad my kids are past that stage in life. And by the time little kids around me come unspooled in a public place, they’ve usually already built up a ton of goodwill.

Kids need the social experience so that the 9/10 eventually becomes 99/100. From your pregame plan to execution, it sounds like you’re doing everything right, thekiyote.

Why would anyone bring an infant to PHOF. But they do in casino’s as well. Leave ‘em with a baby sitter or stay home. Just sayin.

If you're visiting Las Vegas, you have little choice if you don’t bring a babysitter. We did a few times. The Station Casinos have Kids Quests which are great. But, you're off strip and you sign an agreement that you will stay on property...

    #139 10 months ago

I keep reading posts defending Tim by saying it's "his place". He has posted over the years that the PHOF is a registered 501.C3 non profit. If that's the case, then doesn't the legal "owner" have to be a charitable organization, rather than an individual? There should be a board of directors or similar corporate management structure managing the organization.

    From the Tax code...

Under Section 501(c)(3), an organization must not be serving any private interests, including the interests of the creator, the creator’s family, shareholders of the organization, other designated individuals, or other persons controlled by private interests. None of the net earnings of the organization can be used to benefit any private shareholder or individual; all earnings must be used solely for the advancement of its charitable cause.

A 501(c)(3) could be the lifelong dream of its founder; however, once established as a 501(c)(3), it no longer belongs to its founder. Rather, it is a mission-oriented organization belonging to the public. To maintain its favorable tax treatment, it must operate within the confines of the law pertaining to 501(c)(3) organizations.

I was in the PHOF recently, and after a ball deflected off a target and loudly hit the underside of the glass, T. Arnold ran over and said "If you bang on the game again, I'm going to have to ask you to leave" As a 40+ year pinball collector, technician and operator, I assure you, I would never abuse any of his or anyone else's property.

    #140 10 months ago

Yes, you can find cases where people spent a lot of money out of pocket (or managed to convince a lawyer to spend that money) taking the case to trial and somehow managed to convince a jury to give them a payout. It's just that the number is astonishingly small compared to the number of people who try to file that initial complaint.

You just don't get a national news report for every complaint that's thrown out by the judge or decides to be dropped after the plaintiff finds out what it's going to cost. It's a sampling bias.

    Quoted from superNoid:

Its not, but I was there last year and I had my 10 and 13 years old with me. Both play pinball, play at home and at local spots. My 10 year old could literally babysit adults, she more mature than most. My kids were literally walking between rows and spotted a Simpsons pin and got excited and jogged like ... maybe 20 ft to it and someone working there (not Tim) SCOLDED them.
Like, "Stop running or you'll be escorted out!" I actually got so pissed that I confronted this lady and basically told her to piss off and not to talk to my kids again. I'm sure the PHOF staff have to deal with a lot of stupid kids and my kids caught some collateral that day but I'm here to tell you that there is a general grumpiness with the staff here and it really soured my daughter to even want to play anymore.
edit. And why is it mind boggling that people take their kids to Vegas? We were there for dance nationals as were over 200 other dance studios. Vegas isn't all strippers and drugs. There is plenty to do with families while there.

And your kids trips for running and you sue the PHOF out of existence.

Your are the problem. And dont say you wont, with your second statement regarding it Vegas being family friendly. I bet they are ok with you not going again.

    #146 10 months ago

I agree that many kids can be a pain, but in all fairness...my kids are very well behaved (heck, I have an entire arcade in my house...they grew up with this stuff) and they were still rude to me and my kids at the PHOF.

If they don't want kids there, they need to impose an 18+ clause.

Probably a good idea to have a cautious view of any kids. Only takes one brat to hang on a shooter rod to bring the pin down.
