You can totally use that cable, you just run the risk of having the pins be off on either side if you do use it this way. When you get it correct, just block the other pins with some tape.
Beat me to it ha. Hard to say 100% that that's your problem, but that's not the right ribbon cable and what I'd suspect. I'd replace it with the correct one before poking around any boards.
