You get 4.76V on VBATT, but that's with the machine on? (bit high voltage coming from just 3 batteries)
What do you measure on VBATT when the machine is turned off, and then wiggle a bit with the battery holder. Press the batteries, see what happens.
I had a bad connection once which was causing memory loss just once in a while.
