After reading numerous topics and posts about music/rock pins, I started wondering why a manufacturer hasn't come up with a non-licensed music/rock theme, similar to the video games, Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

Before I give my theory behind why I think it would be successful, one of two things would have to be included in the game, with the second option being preferred:

Option #1: Have a mix of 30+ popular rock songs in the game.
Option #2: Give the option to upload your own songs via a USB drive. These songs could play during game play, while the coding would soften the music during call outs, sound effects, etc.

Why I think this would be very successful:

* Song variety - whether it's the mix of 30+ rock songs, or uploading your own, the music wouldn't become as redundant as a one band, 10-15 song pin.
* Any licensing fees would come for the music only, giving more money toward the design of the game.
* Typically if you don't like the band, you're not going to own the machine (unless it's an incredible layout for example)
* Theme - Without a licensed theme, you could get as creative as you'd like. I like the idea of you starting out as a cover or local band, working your way up to stardom. Again, just one idea of many.

What does everyone else think? Would this work? Would it not? What obstacles would manufacturers see with licensed songs, etc.? Could a manufacturer partner with Activision to make it a Guitar Hero themed pin? What am I not thinking of? Feel free to play devil's advocate.

I look forward to everyone's thoughts.

Quoted from o-din:

I think "Rock Star" has already been done.[quoted image]

Damn it! You vets really know your pins. Strike "Rock Star" from the list of a potential titles for the theme.

I'm editing the topic thread as we speak. Thanks o-din

Quoted from TopMoose:

So instead of working out one licensing deal with one band for 9 to 12 songs, manufacturers should make 10 to 15 separate licensing deals with different bands for one or two songs each.
I don't see how that's easier.

I don't think it would be easier by any means dealing with 20-30 bands for individual songs (not sure how Activision does it), but it would create variety. Not sure if it's feasible, but I really like the idea of giving you the opportunity to upload your own music.

Quoted from Coz:

Someone asked the same question a few months ago and in the pole it was an overwhelming no. I definitely think the concept could have worked at the peak of the music game craze with rock band and guitar hero 3. Not sure it would work today? Maybe

I was searching through other forum topics to avoid a duplicate post, but must have missed it. Do you have a link to it @coz? Thanks!

I'm laughing as it was an overwhelming "NO."

However, the opportunity to upload your own songs would be the game changer.
