Replay knocker fires during multiball

The replay knocker starts firing repeatedly during multiball on my Space Station - probably instead of a flasher that should be flashing instead.
Anyone know what could be the problem? A bad transistor or something?

I also have the occasional resetproblem, could that have anything to do with this?

I'm not very good with the system 11-games so any help would be awesome!

Best,
Chris

I wonder if the A/C Select relay could be going bad? have you looked into that/checked schematics? Maybe someone else who has more experience with this type of problem can chime in.

I have thought of the a/c relay..
Could one of these be a good replacement if that's the case?: http://www.pinballpcb.com/Snubber.html

Anyone else got any input on this?

If the a/c relay was going bad i would assume you would have multiple issues with coils and flash lamps.

Does both the flasher and the knocker coil go off at same time? Are both of these on the same associated coil number? Double check under the playfield no one has moved wires around.

Pull the glass and see if pressing both slingshot switches at the same time can recreate the error.

When I turned on the game later today there were multiple issues with the coils and flashlamps.
I could'nt even start a game, when i press the start-button then some other coil activates.
And in the test mode just a few coils activates, and some does it twice.
Feels like the a/c relay anyway or what do you think?

List the coils AND their number as shown in the coil test, including coils that fire at the same time. That would be helpful in diagnosis.

Use the manual and figure out if it is indeed a a/c side issue.

If all A/C solenoids are effected don't just assume the relay is bad (it could be). Use solenoid test and check the relay and see if it clicks on solenoid test 14. If is not changing and locked engaged, or off for that matter, look at what drives it.... solenoid driver 14 which includes Q7, Q3, U17.

I've checked the coils and flashers in the test now.

No flashers at all work in the test. And green GI or AC select relay fire/activates either.

The 3 bank drop target (06, a-side) fires when it should and on the following flasher as well.
Replay knocker (07, a-side) fires when it should and on the following flasher as well.
LF Ball popper (03, a-side) fires when it should and on the following flasher as well.

The only coils that appears to be working is: kickback (13), right sling (20) and left sling (18).
The rest doesn't activate at all.

Anyone got any ideas?

..and since I have some occasional resetproblems as well - i'm thinking of ordering a new replacement auxiliary board and a couple of snubber boards just in case. Would'nt that just solve this issue?

#11 10 years ago

Maybe?

You really should diagnose why the relay is not changing state before replacing stuff. If the MPU/Driver board is locked on for solenoid 14 (the a/c relay) you will still have problems.

Resetting is probably a power issue and unrelated to your flasher / coil problems.

It also seems like the right ball popper-coil stays locked on, don't know if that's because the possible a/c relay problem.

Quoted from barakandl:

Ditto...figure this out first. There will be a TIP-102/122 on the MPU/Driver board that turns on the A/C relay.

No bad transistors on the mpu-board according to my DMM-Readings.
Is checking the diodes next?

#15 10 years ago

OK...lets get more data.
You need a length of wire without clip leads on both ends.
Clip on end to the tab of Q8. This transistor turns on the A/C select relay.
Clip the other end to game ground, like the ground braid.
Power on.
You should hear the AC select relay click as you've provided a path to ground for the power waiting at that relay.

Now enter coil test.
Coils 1-8, should fire either the A side twice, or the C side twice. I don't recall the "sense" of that relay. After firing coil 1 twice, it will move on to coil 2.

Watch and listen carefully. Does a coil for each coil number fire twice?

What we are trying to prove is that the AC relay works.

After gathering that data, turn the game off.
Remove the clip lead attached to ground.
Reboot.
Once the game gets into attract mode, briefly touch the free clip lead to ground. Do you hear the AC select relay click?

Get back into test. Start coil test.
Listen to and feel the AC select relay. For coils 1 thru 8, do you hear or feel the relay click?

Thanx for the great input!
All of a sudden the relay seems to be working fine, and when I checked the fuses again F8 was a goner (checked all fuses just the other day) - changed it and now the flashers seems to be working as well.

However, after a couple of minutes I scent a faint burning-smell apparently coming from the backbox. Checked all the coils below playfield but all of them goes smoothly in the sleeve and
none appears to be burnt.

So is this coming from something overheating on the power-board or aux power-board?
I'm starting to believe that this game is haunted or something..
