pro-football will shoot the ball but not release the coil until it hits a target.....assuming that's not normal operation

yup! actually a toothpick! tomdrum was close but he said polarized, which im thinking meant conductive.

I gotta give tomdrum credit because his guess was a polarizing pin. A polarizing pin is a solid state pinball part inserted into female circuit board edge connectors to help keep the connector from being installed incorrectly. Your cut off toothpick looks very similar.
