Who did it better? Gottlieb or Data East in this era (roughly 1987-1991).
I got to play games from these manufacturers from this era (Class of 1812, Robocop, Torpedo Alley) and was surprised at how much fun they were. These games have not suffered from the pinflation the rest of the hobby has, and I was curious which manufacturer you thought was the “B” game maker from this era. I think Data East wins in the DMD era, but what about early Data East before going DMD? Looking forward to playing these at the next pinball show. Data East has some fun ones with good themes like the Simpsons and Back to the Future, but Gottlieb's like Cactus Jacks and class of 1812 look like fun.

Looks can be deceiving; DE and it's not even close. Much better than their DMD eras

Gottlieb for me imo. Hoops, Surf n Safari, TX Sector, Robo War, Deadly Weapon, Bad Girls, Excalibur, Class of 1812 are all fun. All the DE from that period are one-shot games

I need to lay it out in front of me because who can remember? So from newest (1991) to oldest (1987), and not counting novelty/quasi-pinball games or conversion kits:

Gottlieb: Surf 'n Safari, Class of 1812, Cactus Jack's, Hoops, Car Hop, Title Fight, Deadly Weapon, Vegas, Silver Slugger, Lights...Camera...Action!, Bone Busters, Hot Shots, Big House, Bad Girls, Excalibur, Robo-War, TX-Sector, Diamond Lady, Victory, Arena, Spring Break, Monte Carlo

Data East: Star Trek, Batman, TMNT, Checkpoint, Simpsons, Back to the Future, Phantom of the Opera, Robocop, Monday Night Football, Playboy 35th, Time Machine, Secret Service, Torpedo Alley, Laser War

'80s is close, but I'd take Gottlieb by a hair. '90s is a solid win for DE.
