Picked up a Rollergames back in September that’s been in queue to start a restoration on.

Might as well start stripping the playfield…

2/3s through the topside of the playfield and there’s a lot of baggin’ n taggin’
Still need to remove the pops, ramp and everything under it.

2 easy parts already
First the apron is pretty much perfect. Really happy about that. Just need some sweet instruction cards.
IMG_9198 (resized).jpegIMG_9198 (resized).jpeg
Second, the translight came off the glass with no issues. The glass cleaned up and the back of the translight cleaned up nicely.

IMG_9195 (resized).jpegIMG_9195 (resized).jpeg
The rest of this resto will not be as easy…

If you’ve never watched the show, look it up on youtube. It’s 13 episodes of awesome 1980’s cheese.

Oh yeah it’s amazing. I watched the first few and the back stories are hilarious. I need to finish them.
All of those skaters have to have amazing abs. The amount of times they hit those guardrails with their gut is unreal.

Are you going to keep this or sell it once it's done?

Ha! It’s so hard for me to sell my restos. I had to pull my Mata Hari out of the game room and I feel terrible about it being in the workshop. I’ll probably cry when it comes time to sell it. I have a feeling this Rollergames is going to take me a while.
My point is Mata Hari was my first and that was like 5 years ago and I still dread selling it.

We will see…

It's too bad the CPR couldn't reproduce this playfield.

The six advertised placements could just be left white, or with an option to have a thin decal made separately. The buyer could then install if wanted.

#14 5 months ago

Small amount of progress today. Ramp came off…
Of all the games I’ve restored this playfield is the most intense. I can’t believe how much is on this game…

I'm a bit in awe of how much was on the top and bottom of that playfield.

All the stuff on the top of the playfield was pretty insane in itself.

#19 4 months ago

Ok now I’m done with the teardown. Had a few extra things to label. IMG_9288 (resized).jpegIMG_9288 (resized).jpeg
After I pulled the harness I popped out the t-nuts
IMG_9289 (resized).jpegIMG_9289 (resized).jpeg
Flipped it back over and freeze sprayed the mylar off
IMG_9249 (resized).jpegIMG_9249 (resized).jpeg

Gathered everything up, finished bagging and tagging and filled the bins.
IMG_9286 (resized).jpegIMG_9286 (resized).jpegIMG_9287 (resized).jpegIMG_9287 (resized).jpegIMG_9293 (resized).jpegIMG_9293 (resized).jpegIMG_9294 (resized).jpegIMG_9294 (resized).jpeg

Yeah stuff just kept coming off it. I can’t imagine doing a Twilight Zone after doing this

#21 4 months ago

Got some cool stuff in the mail to help with the project.
A ramp from JodyG
IMG_9292 (resized).jpegIMG_9292 (resized).jpeg
Decals from that guy everyone hates on eBay. More about these later. Pros and cons, he doesn’t make these so calm down if I triggered you by mentioning him.
IMG_9277 (resized).jpegIMG_9277 (resized).jpeg
A rivet press.
IMG_9269 (resized).jpegIMG_9269 (resized).jpegIMG_9270 (resized).jpegIMG_9270 (resized).jpegIMG_9272 (resized).jpegIMG_9272 (resized).jpegIMG_9271 (resized).jpegIMG_9271 (resized).jpeg
And metal mod decals, that I botched on the install…
IMG_9285 (resized).jpegIMG_9285 (resized).jpeg
Going to keep the top but I’ll remove the outer rings.

#22 4 months ago

So now that the playfield is ready to go I drenched it in windex, basically a whole bottles worth and let it soak for about 25 minutes
IMG_9291 (resized).jpegIMG_9291 (resized).jpeg
I get around 89-236 private messages a week wondering what I use when I clean playfields and prep them for restos.
IMG_9296 (resized).jpegIMG_9296 (resized).jpeg
I don’t over think it. Here are the basics:
Windex
Pledge
Steel wool for the ball swirls
Scratch 2.0 (I find it works better than Novus 3)
And then I just touch up the art with Sharpies

#23 4 months ago

Windex and pledge are my goto. Really brings out the shine and helps the clear stick.

#24 4 months ago

Ok all jokes aside here’s what I’m really using.
That previous post was obviously staged so if you’re new to the hobby for the love of god ignore all that.
First I use mean green to get all the surface crap and gunk that can easily be wiped away
Then I go to town with the magic eraser and 91% alcohol
Then I’ll wet sand with 400 grit just enough to get the surface rough for the new paint and clear to adhere to and then use a softened up red finishing pad to make sure I got it all scuffed.
Then I’ll use that Rapid Prep to ensure I got all wax and oils off and the toothbrush will work this product down into all the little cracks and whatever
After that I’m wearing Nitrile gloves when handling because I don’t want any oils even from my greasy hands getting on this playfield

The ply separated on this game at the shooter lane so I lifted the ply and packed a ton of wood glue in there clamped it, wiped up the extra that squeezed out then clamped it again. Should be solid tomorrow we’ll see.

I’m getting the mylar glue off. Most people use the flour and alcohol trick. I find that high end heroin works better. IMG_9308 (resized).jpegIMG_9308 (resized).jpeg
So side story I go up to the kitchen to get flour my wife hands me this brown powder, she’s on this organic free range wheat, pay 10x more for everything that has organic stamped on the package kick why are people buying brown eggs for $10???!!!

So anyway what I found that works the best for me is lay down alcohol right on the glue first and let it sit for 3 minutes.
IMG_9311 (resized).jpegIMG_9311 (resized).jpeg
Dab it dry with a paper towel when the timer goes off (if you don’t use a timer the whole project should pretty much be scrapped)
IMG_9312 (resized).jpegIMG_9312 (resized).jpeg
Then put just enough flour down to cover it and with one single rub all the glue just rolls right up. IMG_9313 (resized).jpegIMG_9313 (resized).jpeg

IMG_9314 (resized).jpegIMG_9314 (resized).jpegIMG_9316 (resized).jpegIMG_9316 (resized).jpegIMG_9309 (resized).jpegIMG_9309 (resized).jpeg

#27 4 months ago

I need you to sell me this when it's done.

#28 4 months ago

I took the magic eraser to the whole playfield.
IMG_9317 (resized).jpegIMG_9317 (resized).jpeg
Then followed up with a wet sand of 400
IMG_9318 (resized).jpegIMG_9318 (resized).jpeg
Next I’m going to pop out a few inserts that are getting decals or replaced. Activate Heat Gun!

IMG_9320 (resized).jpegIMG_9320 (resized).jpeg

#29 4 months ago

Had to pump the brakes, forgot to check for low spots that needed scuffed.
Before
IMG_9321 (resized).jpegIMG_9321 (resized).jpeg
After
IMG_9322 (resized).jpegIMG_9322 (resized).jpeg
Really need that matte look to be consistent. I hate clear coating because of ghosting. So I’m going overboard to make sure I don’t have any adhesion issues. Especially in the ball drop or pops areas.

Now I’m ready to pop out inserts IMG_9324 (resized).jpegIMG_9324 (resized).jpeg

#30 4 months ago

I need some validation
I have these decals but the quality is meh…
They’ll work fine but I tried to see if I can just paint the art back in the inserts. I have a ton of time to make a decision.

Problem is I can’t waterslide these because I can’t find anyone that can print white ink without paying like $100 plus.

Is this T-Birds ok or should I sand it all off and use the decals?IMG_9343 (resized).jpegIMG_9343 (resized).jpeg

IMG_9342 (resized).jpegIMG_9342 (resized).jpeg
#31 4 months ago

I think the paint looks better myself. One thing to do is light it up from the backside and see how it looks.

#32 4 months ago

Agreed, the decals aren't quite as crisp and the decal colors are more than just a bit off from the original.

And if you have to be that close to see that it was touched up most people won't even notice when playing the game.

Is that the worst case decal or are some too far gone to touch up with paint?

I’m painting them at the moment trying anything I can think of to help make it look ok

You can see the 4 I have done and I have the Hot Flash and Maniacs left.

I’d keep at it painting, they look good.

If you have any extra insert put the decal on it of the worst paint job. Backlight it and see what you think of the painted vs decal.

Once cleared decision is final as you know.

Hot Flash or Hot Trash?

Well I repainted them all. I’ll let these marinate for a while. I have a ton more to do and I’m letting these bog me down. I see a few areas I want to readdress already.
More to come…

Thank you sir! I figured if I’m going to sell this game to jrcmlc for $45,000 it better be pretty close to perfect

#40 4 months ago

Ok so this ended up being a mini project within the project but I’m done with the inserts.
Garrett you said once I clear then that’s that. Well I started thinking why wait to clear these with the whole playfield? So I set up a mini paint area and put 2 part in my airbrush and just cleared them to see how they turned out.

I use this for when I drop low spots. Mixed it 4 to 1 with a plastic spoon.
IMG_9369 (resized).jpegIMG_9369 (resized).jpeg
Sprayed 2 thin layers 3 minutes apart then flooded them.
IMG_9365 (resized).jpegIMG_9365 (resized).jpegIMG_9367 (resized).jpegIMG_9367 (resized).jpegIMG_9370 (resized).jpegIMG_9370 (resized).jpegIMG_9371 (resized).jpegIMG_9371 (resized).jpegIMG_9372 (resized).jpegIMG_9372 (resized).jpeg

From the pictures they look great especially considering how small the details are.

If you have to get that close to see imperfections at 2-3 feet no-one would notice a thing.

Having a little fun with the sponsors. When I touch up the playfield I’m going to airbrush the company sponsor boxes all white and reapply the logos. So I decided to find actual logos to use for the companies.

Figuratively I cannot because thats my baby!
Literally I cannot because no one will pay an amount that'll make me forget about that game.

Hopefully you don't feel that way about this one.

Cleaning the old epoxy out of the insert holes is a pain and took way longer than I anticipated but got that chore done. Had to take extreme care on the topside to avoid nicking the edges. Didn’t want to accidentally reshape them.

One of the final major cleaning task is the wax and silicone remover. I spray this and then work it into all cracks and gently around the playfield with a toothbrush, let it sit for a minute wipe it up then do another application.
