Living in the Netherlands I noticed that Gottlieb's with the stamp "Germany" on the mechanical board usually didn't have the chimes.
In the Netherlands chimes or bells where never used, mostly set in local bars and snackbars.
There was even a occasion that I heard the bar owner say that he was pleased that a more silent machine was put there (Bally Monte Carlo 1973) compared with the one before (Williams Fun Fest 1973).
In the late 70's I met a local dealer who told me the same and that that was a reason for the large amount of Bally machines bought for the "silent" part!
So, if the mechanical sound already being irritating.... chimes and bells where out of the question!
First time I knew there where bells in a pinball machine was in the second half of the 70's playing at a arcade in Belgium, so that's my part of the "dingding, dongdong"story
