    Replace the belt that makes it spin. Many people use a slingshot rubber as it’s easier to find and has better grip than the replacement belts. From what you describe above, it sounds like the belt is slipping due to age/wear.

    Because the belt is just tight enough to spin the wheel. With the added weight of the ball, it can’t and “slips out” as the OP described. But checking the alignment is also sound advice.
