Gonna ask a few questions here, and probably more to come. Forgive my noob-ness, I'm entirely in the dark regarding streaming, apps, etc.

Just picked up a Samsung QLED SmartTV. Love this thing! We already have Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix. Definitely want to get a Blu-ray player, I see some of them come with streaming apps, are those any different than the same apps that are already loaded on my TV? Was also recommended to get a Firestick or Roku device, are the same-named apps on those any different than the ones already on my TV? What are the advantages of using Firestick/Roku versus just downloading apps from online directly to the TV? Any particularly advantageous stick/dongle to recommend?

Trying to set up WMP and VLC players to cast to the TV from a Windows 7 PC, I'm following all the instructions I've found online but it's not working. I understand it's very simple with Windows 10, don't have a Win10 PC yet though. Anyone had problems with Win7 and gotten it to work?

Feel free to throw any other info in there that I wouldn't think to ask. Thanks!

Edit: looking at this one for blu-ray - Sony UBP-X700M.

Quoted from mbwalker:

Ditto^^. Maybe at first the TV apps run fine, but as the content providers add more pizazz and content to their platform, then you'd likely want to switch to a newer external streamer down the road.

Is it possible to just update the tv-based apps from time to time, same way you'd update program or drivers on a pc?
