My Xenon top saucer quit working. Will not fire on a solenoid test either. I swapped in another known working solenoid driver board, replaced the saucer/coil assembly with another and still won't fire. It shows 43VDC at the yellow wires. All other coils fire fine. Solenoid driver board connectors were re-pinned. Need to deliver this working to Pinfest, any help would be appreciated!

Does that machine have a solenoid expander board under the playfield?

No it does not.

I swapped in an Alltek SDB to be sure, still the same. If I ground the non-banded side of the coil it will fire.

Ok, how does the rest of the wire on the non banded side of the coil look? Is it broken along its way back to the backbox?

I checked continuity between it and the SDB connector for the top saucer and it shows continuity. I also repined that connector just to be sure.

It seems like the signal to close the loop is not getting through. Maybe the mpu controlled return/grounding wire (I think its black with red?) One of the J5 connections on the sdb pin 7(?)

Can you swap in a different mpu, maybe an Alltek or nvram version?

I re-pinned the SDB J5 pin 7, that's where I checked continuity. I have an Alltek MPU and can install it but I'm thinking perhaps a connector pin off the MPU. I'll install the Alltek to be sure.

Installed the Alltek MPU, still the same.

Maybe a stupid question. Is the solenoid itself wired properly?

Yes. Yellow wires to the banded diode side of the coil. Believe me I've f@@ked that up before!

Looks like the top saucer is a direct signal from the MPU and does not go through the decoder on the SDB. Check continuity from MPU J4 pin 5 to SDB J4 pin 11. You need to test from the back of the MPU to the back of the SDB to verify the pin inside the connectors are good. The easiest way is to take a row of header pins and plug one into each connector, then check end to end via the header pins.

Actually, if you haven't repinned both of those connectors I would go ahead and do that. MPU J4 is especially susceptible to corrosion.

Thanks! I repined both those connector pins for the 2nd time and now if fires. It was working and quit. How did you figure that out from the schematics? I'd like to know for future reference. I looked and looked.

Here are a couple of pages from the schematics. On the first page you can see the top saucer connects to SDB J5 pin 7 (output) and routes back to J4 pin 11 (input).

The second page shows SDB (board A3) J4 pin 11 connects to MPU J4 pin 5.
