This is usually because the balls are magnetized and stick together in the middle of the trough. Degauss the balls. Get new ones, or use balls that won't get magnetized.

I have a ball trough protector too in mine, it prolongs the time before the balls start to stick. The PBL balls are pretty good, but again not perfect. Just be aware that it happens. A quick shake of the machine frees them up fairly well for a while too.
