Hi All,

First time pin owner starting with a Data East Star Wars 1992. Been about 2wks in nostalgic bliss and also 2wks of fun issues. Almost every day something likes to stop working. I leave it turned off when not in play and usually unplugged.

Got it from Great American Pinball as shopped with new LEDs and no other mods.

A bit of a panic here. Got some friends coming tomorrow to show off my DESW, but when I turned it on today to play, the ball isn't launching. The fire button does the skill shot but no ball action. It then plays the starship flying sound on a frequent loop. Fire button doesn’t do anything at this point. It does not go into ball search either bc I think it still thinks it’s in skill shot. Power cycled it a few times and unplugged from the wall too for a few min. After the power cycle, I press the start button, and it says "0 balls missing," does a ball search but the plunger doesn't go. I've run diagnostics and the launcher coil does not fire.

I'm a total newbie. Can someone give me troubleshooting pointers? I took a look under the hood, but have no idea what I'm looking for. I've also posted in the DESW Club thread.

Other coils not working ? or just that one ?

Other coils - pull fuses and check with a meter.

Only one - check for broken wire at the coil lugs. Thick wires to the lugs or thin wires from the coil windings to the lugs.

Worst case scenario tell them you just got it to look at and not actually play.

It’s just this coil. They look fine but not sure what I’m looking at.

See red circles - dig around those thin wires for a crack or break.

Purple wire orange stripe, yellow wire purple stripe - check continuity of each wire from coil to board in the head it goes to - you could have a break along the way.

Does that coil fire in test ?

Your guidance was right!!! I gently touched the purple wire and it’s not connected. Is this a soldering job? I’ll need to go get one of those.

Yes. Strip the wire and tin it and solder back on.

Youtube has lots of short how to videos.

This thread might be a little advanced on the topic, so it might be good to bookmark it for later, but it has a lot of good info about soldering and desoldering:
