A West Coast Friend informed me on what he described as some
bizarre prices at Jon Torrence's auction.
    Southland Engineering Speedway - 13K
    Genco 2 Player B.B. - 16K

After a couple of hours, I'm still scratching my head over this
one: Midway White Lightning - 9K
Yet a near mint Midget Alley - $3,250.00
I'm wearing down my finger nails!

    #4 6 years ago

Interesting. Where can you find auction results?

    #7 6 years ago

He just moved out near me from Clovis CA.

I saw part of his collection at his house. Just beyond words the pieces he's got in there. He helped me work out some issues wth my Sega Jumbo.

    #8 6 years ago
    Quoted from MarkG:

They've got a nice catalog online

And there's also a link to the auction prices. I'll see if a Pinball Friend can link it here
and add a few comments. He has many of the same machines that were, and yet,
being auction off. The auction continues tomorrow. Torrence had one amazing
(to me anyways) collection. His cars may even be more impressive..

Thanks for posting the results link..

    Quoted from PACMAN:

    Midway White Lightning
    Final Bid: $11,070.00

Yea, because those numbers were under "current bid", I had a feeling
they weren't final, and don't forget, another 20% for fees are added to those
prices. Maybe the Midget Alley wasn't a final bit yet. That machine (I'll just say)
is 4X a White Lightning (but really 5 or 6X)..

    #14 6 years ago

    Yep, up up and away

I am familiar with Torrence, think Barret Jackson. These guys are appealing to a very high end crowd. Classic cars selling for 100x more than street. Same deal.

They market in The Robb Report. They spend about 20k on the ad alone to my estimation.

1000% more than street. Same deal.

    Sure.

    #17 6 years ago

My internet got so overwhelmed loading pages it locked up. I give up.

    #18 6 years ago

Tony says, those prices are redrum.

    #19 6 years ago

This tells it all. Anyone want to bid on this?

    #21 6 years ago

And the Midget Alley went for under 4K.
Although not restored, it looked very nice.
I would have picked that up, and I'm 100%
broke compared to many of those bidders..

Wonder what the Hawaiian Beauty sold for?

    #23 6 years ago
    Quoted from Budman:

Wonder what the Hawaiian Beauty sold for?

    Looks like $3,465.00
I'm sure it was nice, but still a pretty
    good buck even if A1.
    I believe that's with the 20% fees..

    #24 6 years ago
    Quoted from Budman:

Wonder what the Hawaiian Beauty sold for?

    It was very nice.

The 1950 Gottlieb Mermaid sold for $15000!

But a lot of the other pinball games went fairly low - probably because not many pinball people knew about it.

    #26 6 years ago

Yea! And I know of one other that sold for $50,000.00,
but with the buyers fees, this one takes the record..
Although not as rare, I figured maybe the 37
Roc Ola World Series may have been closer to this
    figure...
Years back, I remember playing a Bat-a-Score at John
Papa's. Taking a look under that play board I imagine
    may have been interesting..

LOL, without keys. You can tell people who don't know squat about games when they make a big deal out of a game having the keys.

While not as obscure as the rest of the stuff, that Gottlieb Fire Queen looked real nice and went for $553, a pretty nice deal. Wish I knew about this sooner :-/

This Rock-Ola World Series is a nice piece. Whoever walked out of there with the $1050 Frontiersman got the deal of the day.

Is it wrong i want the catalog now? Damn glad I didnt know about this auction till after the fact.

    #34 6 years ago

I have some of the previous catalogs. They are always fun to look through.

I almost pooped myself when I saw the price on this.
    http://auctions.morphyauctions.com/10__Midway_s_Shooting_Gallery_Arcade_Game__-LOT281234.aspx
I have one in similar condition. One has to keep things in perspective though. This auction isn't the new price guide it's just a best case scenario situation. Though to find now but it wasn't long ago you could find one fairly easily for under $1000.

    So what did you buy?

    #37 6 years ago

Prices on a lot of woodrails and EMs looked pretty good if you weren't after coveted titles.

    #38 6 years ago

There were way more pinballs if you go through the online listing. Some great bargains and some titles went unexpectedly high.

Can't believe how much playfield wear the Mermaid had and it still went for $15000!

Were all these games from the Torrence collection?

    #41 6 years ago

I am proud to say I was at the auction a couple of days in advance (filming, not buying) and had the chance to play and view all items. What an amazing collection! Most of it was restored with a lot of love and attention to detail. The auction broke 15 world records! Jon Torrence is an amazing man and once I make it to millionaire, I'll be buying his stuff blind folded. On a side note: also visited Pinball Hall of Fame after meeting up with Tim Arnold.

Lot #30: Rare 10¢ Gottlieb Hawaiian Beauty Pinball Arcade Game.

    http://auctions.morphyauctions.com/mobile/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=281225

Gottlieb manufactured only around 900 of this particular game in 1954. It features lovely tropical graphics on both the playing field and the eye-catching back glass. Chipping and flaking to the image is evident on the back glass. The cabinet and playing field show age and use related wear. No keys are provided.

    Final Bid (Includes Buyers Premium):$3,465

I'm not a whole lot into woodrails, but I kinda wish I had kept the HB that
I once owned. But then it's not the only one that maybe I should have decided
    differently on..

Very interesting layout with 3 pops between widely spaced flippers - seems like always a chance to nudge and have it pop back out of there. Spanish Eyes on steroids!

Ditto. I sold a project Hawaiian Beauty with repro backglass and plastics. Could have been (and hopefully will be by buyer) a beautiful restoration, but I just have too many projects and not enough time for them all.

    #47 6 years ago

HB was a friends grail game. After putting some time on one he said it's a looker but just an ok player. The split playfield bothered him a little.

Lot #62: Rare 5¢ Gottlieb Diamond Lill Pinball Arcade Game.

    http://auctions.morphyauctions.com/mobile/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=281223

Another rare game produced by Gottlieb that features the artwork of Roy Parker. Only around 700 of these pinball games were ever produced. This example is in great condition as evidenced by the vibrant back glass and playing field. Circa 1954. One key is provided.

    Lot #193: 5¢ H.C. Evans Bat-A-Score Arcade Game.

    http://auctions.morphyauctions.com/mobile/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=281051

As this baseball themed arcade game was manufactured in 1948, it is in near pristine condition. The housing cabinet is superb with curved glass and has a clean interior field, containing two animated manikin baseball players- a pitcher and a batter. The player is given 10 pitches for every nickel and can receive up to 200,000 points. The objective of the game is to hit the steel ball into one of the 5 levels at the rear, the lowest level being a foul and the highest, a home run. The light up display is very active while in operation, moving the player from one base to the other. Unlike most baseball arcade games, the steel ball is not rolled but thrown overhand This game is challenging and fun but definitely requires skill. Thankfully on free-play for endless amounts of practice and amusement. Two keys are provided. This machine currently has a 1¢ coin mech. The cabinet may have had a professional restoration, but the interior looks to be in gorgeous, original condition. A holy grail title to all advanced collectors. Less than five known examples.

Final Bid (Includes Buyers Premium): $61,500
