I'm in this predicament as well and if SMVE is true, I may buy both. Based on what Ive read and more importantly what I've played, I think right now, for me, I'll be buying a IMVE. It's just plain fun, even though I think the rules are shallow. Sometimes fun is more important than depth...

Hah, well, compared to checkers, chess rules are deep as hell, especially if you take into account castling, and the en passant rule. So more accurately I'd equate IM to checkers and LOTR to chess. Funny thing is, I like playing both games on both levels. Variety is the spice of life, right??
