I feel your pain. I have a Highways (1961) same cabinet and 50 volts. Ive tried most of the suggestions and still not much better. I have done a bridge rectifier on a Gottlieb woodrail and they went from dull to too strong. I then tried putting on a resistor and kind of got a happy medium but would rather not use any of that. I also took windings off the coil.
