A complete, working time capsule from 1949. If you like woodrails or pitch-and-bats, you will appreciate the condition and special quality of this rare game. It likely has spent its entire life in the dry western climate, which seems to be kind to old games.
This was the second Williams pitch and bat to my knowledge to have a running man unit in the lightbox, and in those years the running man animation was vertical. The game was before its time by having the backglass animation coordinated with playfield animation (lights on the bases) to show the progress of your base runners.
Super nice playfield with original gloss and just a slight amount of wear near the side outholes and pitching lane. Mylar has been placed over the pitching lane for extra protection. The original plate glass still covers the playfield and includes silkscreened rules printed in the corners and coin information across the lower middle.
Original backglass, looks brand new with the exception of one small spot near top edge. Cabinet is solid, with nicely refinished natural woodrails on top showing very little wear, and similarly nice legs. There are a few scratches on sides and front of cabinet that could be easily touched up.
The inside of the game feels crisp with technical instructions and running man schematics still stapled in place. See pictures for details. The original green metal coin box and instruction cards are also included in their original envelope with old timey script.
Bonus fun fact for baseball buffs out there — 1949 was the year of a storybook pennant race between the Yankees and Red Sox documented in David Halberstam’s classic book “Summer of ‘49”.
