Played the wolverine edition, I think this really is a players machine, very tight shots.
Pro's: great artwork all round, spinning disc is fun, a lot of shots to master
So so: I wasn't blown away by the speech and music
Con's: iceman ramp really blocks your view when swinging over, normally I really like led's but on X-men they are way to bright.

update: After playing this some more i'm really disappointed in the rules of this game, it just doesn't pull you in for one more game like the last sterns including the avengers. Most of the time i see shots blinking but don't have a clue of what i'm doing.

update: Played it with the newest code (last time i played was with an early code) and the game rules seem to have improved quit a lot, so i've updated my ratings on these. I even had fun for the first time on this machine.

Fun game to play. Looks good to me all-around. I'm not into X-men, but I think Stern people did a good job on this pinball machine overall. This rating based on the recent updated software.

Xmen is a game that is loaded with a lot of challenging shots, good mode variety, and mostly good sounds. The use of three different GI (General Illumination) lights (Red White Blue) gives different ambient feeling during gameplay, and really draws you in to the modes. The unique spinning magnet used for Magneto is fun to watch on the start of every Magneto multiball and always has a "wow" effect to on lookers. The Gambit hurry up shot is a great throw back to a WMS classic "The Shadow" where you utilize the upper flipper in a held position to bounce the ball off a left orbit into the pop cap bumpers. The shot is very satisfying, and fun to make. The in close Wolverine magnet can be problematic to new players, as it has a tendency to throw the ball into an outlane, but the quick multiball you can get from nailing him is generally worth the risk for new players. The game is very approachable, and while it was unfortunately shipped incomplete, the software is really comming around.

Version 1.2 definitely brought this game to life. Storm and Weapon X modes are fantastic. Tend to lose shots due to watching all the platfield is doing. I actually like the swinging ice bridge as it is a nice feature. As of software version 1.3 (not sure what happened to the code on the Stern Website) this game is a solid 10. I have both LOTR and SMB and this may end up being better than both. Time will tell...

(I've played about 10 - 20 games on Magento so my rating is based on this)

The game looks nice, has great DMD animations, the sound quality is good, voices aren't bad, and the toys don't look as bad as many people made them out to be. It has that reversed Tron feel to it, but unfortunately, isn't as smooth as Tron is. At times, it can feel just plain "clunky", especially b/c of the tight shot from the right flipper through Wolverine.

On the other hand, the game isn't linear like Tron and has more shots than Tron.

Aside from some clunkiness and frustrating shots, I'd say this is a solid Stern game.

Got a chance to play Magneto version at a friends house. The overall look and theme of the pin is amazing. There's a lot going on, on the playfield. Magnets are powerful and add to the game. Left ramp shot feels very satisfying. Night crawler pop ups look much bigger in person. I would love to own one some day.

Meh! Not even close to as good as alot of people are hyping it but it's an ok game. The layout is almost an exact opposite of Tron which I give a thumbs down for lack of imagination. The toys look like toddler toys! The moving ramp is just useless and gets in the way. The nightcrawlers look dumb as they should have been molded instead of just pop up targets (CHEAP!). The spinning disc could be cool if they would/could speed it up. The scoop is too close to the side of the playfield so you get too many drop in's from the scoop (ala IJ4). The artwork on the playfield could have been alot better considering they licensed it after the comics the big circle X just doesn't do it for me. Some things I do like are the use of the magnets. The cabinet and backglass artwork are nice. Third flippers are always fun and challenging.

Updated the code and the game came to life for our family. One of the best aspects of this game for us is that it is exciting for our worst player up to our best (who isn't very good, really). Regardless, any player can experience reasonable ball times, locks, multi-balls, and a great deal of excitement. Scores? who cares? Fun? One of the all time greatest!

Edit: I updated my ratings as I found another machine in great condition, with sound I could hear... Edit2: updated my ratings again... found a machine with new code. Edit3: played it side by side with metallica... and I prefer Met !!

Nice looking game, loved the music but could not fully get into it initially. I do not like the theme very much - and disliked the backglass, but really enjoyed a beautiful light show on the PF.

Cabinet art is nice as well. But to an average (or below average) played like me, the game has limited flow at start, at least when you are inexperienced, meaning I would have had to spend more dollars than my patience allowed! (edit: I have now spent that money, and it's worth it). Many shots are hard (excellent players will like it)...too hard for me to do them in succession. The wolverine figure is a major flaw. It does not help on the left side and...it's ugly. Another problem is that a beginner does not really understand what to do at first glance. Too many shots are flashing.
Clearly a game you need to own to fully appreciate. Must be really rewarding.

X-Men just didn't do it for me. Not a bad game by any means, just not my cup of tea. Personally, I would have preferred if the license was based on the movies as opposed to the original comic books. The machine looks a bit childish to me due to this, but I think the majority like it better this way. Either way, it is still a good pin. If you are a fan of the comic books, I'm sure you will appreciate what this pin has to offer.

Xmen LE is one of the most beautiful games I have ever seen. From the cabinet to the backglass to the hand drawn art on the PF and finally the lighting. The light show is fantastic. My bally/williams games really are looking dated compared to this.

As far as play, it has decent shot flow - lots to do with the upper flipper and decent variation. It's loads of fun.

I picked up my machine today, and have been playing all day/night etc. I was a little bit hesitant about the wolverine toy taking up the left side of playfield after reading such bad reviews/comments about this. I do feel that it is does take up some room and could have been a little bit narrower. Overall it isnt a real concern and this shouldnt scare off potential x men pinball buyers! I have played about 50 or so games on machine with the updated 1.2 software. And i rate the gameplay big time. it has plenty of shot play and plenty of interaction for the player. the rules not sure what has changed in the new code because never got to play the old code. but they seem very deep, i havent even seemed to be close to finishing half the modes etc. I will say the LED's and the colours of the playfield are amazing. and cabinet decals are awesome. beats the hell out of the older machines. (Still got Love for bally/williams :). but this stern is a real contender for top 10. I am not rating this high because i own machine/ i am rating this machine on how i feel it compares to other games i have played and what i consider a good game. This rates up there with the best.

The game looks super cool, i definitely loved it! Now, I am a stop and go fan, but this game just didn't have the flow I was looking for. Played a magneto version if that helps.

I would say try it out, I can see some people loooving it. Just no lastability for me

I certainly wasn't expecting to love this game as much as I do. This might be in my top 3 Sterns of all time.

As a huge X-Men fan who couldn't wait to have X-men be his first NIB.................Glad I waited to play it before I pulled the trigger. Art is amazing and is one of the best on any pinball machine. DMD is awesome! Music and lighting are "OK", but the real killer for the Wolverine figure and his magnet. . There is no flow on the left side and middle playfield due to the Wolverine figure which basically blocks everything. The magnets are located in odd positions which disrupt the game play in a bad way, i.e. throw your ball into an out lane.

This game was honestly on my $hit list and was one I chose not to play even though I owned it. The latest code release 1.3 made a huge step forward with making the game fun to play. The rules are deep and combos are there. Overall a good looking game with lots to do. Some final polishing to the code and its a top 5 game. Its going to be a must have in the future.

Had a chance to play this today for the first time. 3 games played and I think it was the biggest letdown since I played Rolling Stones. How some of you can rate this as the best pinball of all time when it's been out for less than a month is bewildering. I can understand anticipation, but this is merely an average game with a cool idea for a theme.

It's an okay game. Has great art and toys if you like the X-men comics (which I do). But the game itself is merely average in difficulty and playability. No great shots or interesting modes. Another Stern letdown, IMO.

Game is much improved with the 1.24 code, but not perfect. I own the Wolverine version and I absolutely love the artwork. The dots and music are great. Most of the voices are good but a couple are not. The flow is good if you can make your shots but the shots are tight so this is not always easy. Wolverine needs to be moved to the right to open the Beast lane. There are a ton of modes which will ensure longevity. Some are easy and others not but villain mode progression now makes them doable. You won't beat this game the first time playing it. Don't like the scoop awarding in-lanes and they need to incorporate combo champs so it isn't perfect. Game is has good speed and has some unpredictability with the magnets and disk. Nightcrawler is fun but in this code he comes too often and the ramp only moves in a few of the modes. I set the pitch a little steeper (6.8) and that seems to solve the SDTM problems some people were complaining about. Having a lot of fun with this game and glad I bought it.

Another well-designed Stern, however there are apparently a lot of software bugs still present. The 2 figurines are maybe a bit too much "in your face" and the flow isn't as good as the best ones out there.
So all in all, a fine machine, good looking, but just not enough to be an instant classic.

I think XMEN has the potential to become a top 10 pin once the dust settles.
The theme integration is excellent, the artwork is second to none and the gameplay is fantastic. It creates a very immersive feeling when playing it and you really get sucked into this game.
From the variation and clever ruleset in the modes, to the quality feel, I don't feel like I'm playing a traditional Stern at all. I would put this pin up against any of my BW games.
I was skeptical about this pin but, aside form some esrly QC issues, I think it's safe to say that Stern has turned a corner with Tron, ACDC and now XMEN!

From the start button it grabs you. The Red DMD is crystal clear. You plunge the first ball trying for the soft plunge and the skill shot from the third flipper to the ramp - feels so good when you make it, like you were meant to make the shot. The sounds when you start and make the shot are extremely satisfying, taking you into the battle. A brief glance up reveals well done animations, and information on what is about to happen, the battle with Magneto. As your attention snaps back to the ball, you know what you must do. First game in and Magneto multiball about to start, the disk is spinning wildly. The balls are sure to fly off, "Control!" you think. A frenzied minute later, and you realize you must gather the XMen in order to fight Magento effectively.

I found the shots to be easily recognizable and makable with some effort. The ramps are well placed and the iceman moving ramp is a nice effect. Wolverine is well placed and does not seem to block access to shots or hang up the ball. The artwork is errrmagersh amazing. The cabinet art, the backglass, the playfield, this may be Stern's best art package to date. XMen sounds are impeccable, with deep bass and well integrated themes. Lots of fun to play. Feels like a keeper.

I have not liked a game this much till my TZ arrived 5 years ago. I also just bought a AC/DC BLK LE, and I HATE IT! This is by far one of the best games i have played and want to keep playing for a long time. I played MM and did not draw me back for more. I get long plays exciting shots, IM just speechless. Plus im on 1st version of the software, and im told the next updates will make this in-creatable (i think it awesome now) This game is the top of my list!
