X file is a very fast and challenging game with cool toys that's very fun to play

I really don't know why this game gets such bad ratings, the sound quality is not that great but other than that i think the game play itself is pretty good and the theme is cool it has some hard shots.

I have no idea why people hate this machine so much. It may be pretty basic and boring to begin with but once you get into it more its such a fun game, very fast paced and quite challenging shots. The music is also enjoyable, so 90s and fits the X files theme well. How can something like Family Guy (which is just toys with no skill involved) be ranked #47 but yet this isn't even in the top 100 and ranked #238?!?

This game really doesn't hold my attention. Played it a bunch of times and just can't seem to get into it.

Not an easy game. Ramp shots are tough. This machine gets a lot of play time in my lineup. For the prices you can find them at, this is a good deal. I just hate the curved back glass and crappy one speaker sound.

I bought this machine to add to my collection. I have the top 20 or so games including Twilight Zone, Monster Bash, Medieval, Elvira, etc. I was surprised when I saw how low rated this game was. I agree, the vocals suck (although sound track is surprisingly good), but the game play is pretty (really, really) slick. The ramps are hard shots - the angles are different from every other game and hitting the left ramp consistently is impossible. A hundred bucks to anyone than can make 5 in a row! This game is hard - kinda like Dracula. Overall, should be in the top 50.

I was a major fan of the XF back in the day when it ruled TV ratings. So naturally, I had to try this machine.

The good: 1. Beautiful playfield in terms of artwork - THIS is for the fans.
2. The alien baby and the fluke are great "tips of the hat" - too bad they are static toys.
3. Filing cabinet looks good - magnets when they work - are absolutely awesome when they throw the ball at the filing cabinet three times and then finally throw the ball into the cabinet.
4. Side art on cabinet is short and to the point - I love it.
5. Ramps are creative and awesome.

Cons: 1. Flow....if you do not hit these ramps 100% perfectly, you're going to have a boring game.
2. Sound: it sucks with one speaker - absolutely horrible
3. Sound variation: some quotes are memorable that get our adrenaline up - it's natural. When I can nearly quote the game for every event that occurs...that's bad...
4. Parts: Expen$ive and hard to find. Good luck
5. High maintenance (subjective): easily the most attention needed in my old collection. Never could play a game without something going weird/wonky.

Bottom line: Such a shame. I wanted to love this pin; I really did. It looks really good, but man, if the stars aren't lined up for you that game, if can get very old, stale, and boring quickly. Bummer :(.

Was a huge fan of the X files TV show and so wanted this machine to be good, unforunately its not.

They could've done so much with this, i mean the show had so much that they could've incorparted into it.
The sound in this machine is some of the worst i've heard in a pin.....sounds distorted/muffled poorly done.
Artwork is horrid and has no sharpness to it...boring and poorly executed.
PF in general looks cheap and cheesy.

Not a fan of the curved backbox, really dont like em.. ugly whe next to traditional pin styled ones.

Toys in this pin are average, Alien in tube is neat, filing cabinet is troublesome and hard to trace.

Gameplay is limtied and becomes old and boring fast.

Just another SEGA pin suffering from cost cutting, a wasted license, sega had so many good ones...a real shame.

I watched the TV show so of course I rate this high.I love the game.It has some nice ramps, the file cabinet is cool, the trap door in the play field is surprising the first time it opens up.When you LED this game it looks awesome!I'll keep for a while, but always looking for more.

This machine rocks. I gladly buy all these Sega machines everyone dislikes. They are awesome entertainment to me, and very easy to work on. And reasonably priced as well. Buy one while they are still cheap. This is my alltime favorite pin- excellent fun .

Another licensed theme from Say-Guh that actually should have been a great game. Could've been the next TZ. Instead… we got this game.

The Pros:
The ramps are interesting and they take the ball all over the upper PF. Alien babies in a jar are rad. A fantastic game to practice your multiball skills on.

The Cons:
The standard issue 7 lane fan layout should have been a good start, but the toys in this deck are unreliable and the ruleset is uninspired to say the least. The art package is standard issue Photoslop and the sounds are tinny at best. The audio quotes from the show sound like they are mumbled through a wet towel and even the most exciting parts of the game (multi ball) become monotonous quickly. Rob Hurtado put the hurt on one other pinball game as a designer… wait for it… Independence Day. Who would have guessed?

The Takeaway:
I don't care what anyone else says, this game is not underrated. If anything, it is overrated. The three sentences in "The Pros" category is being incredibly generous with the sheer amount of POOT packed into this box. Even when tuned and maintained in primo condition, as someone who loves to play pinball and considers himself a decent player, this game is an absolute, completely utterly staggering bore.

I'd rather watch The X-files re-runs.

This is one of those machines that I like and dislike at the same time. The reason is that I like how it kind of plays like a constant multiball with the cabinet being an easy shot and then when you are down to your last ball you can hit the cabinet again to have another ball added. The dislike comes from the difficult shots, the ramps are very narrow so you have to be right on, it's not such a big deal for me until you are fumbling with 3 balls and can't get rid of them due to them coming back down the ramps from a shot that wasn't quite perfect. The inability to send balls somewhere during multiball to obtain a little relief is what brings this machine down. Multiball would be worth it if there was somewhere for the balls to go but the ball doesn't leave your flippers for long on this pin. Besides that the machine I played had cabinet problems and would have to wait for the game to search for lost balls before it awarded multiball many times which was frustrating.

I loved the TV show and wanted to like this more but found it to be only average.

If you are an X-files fan, some of the artwork on this machine is pretty good. You will pick up little things others will not understand for example the bees, Morley smoke etc. The backglass also IMO is very good. The problem with this game is where it really counts, the gameplay. It just is not that fun to play. The overall quality of the machine is also not very good.

The ultimate multiball machine! Cool ramps, fast gameplay, great orbits, nice toys, magnet, nice animations on DMD, and the music... I cant believe, that this game ranks so low. If you think, this machine is cheap, than all new Stern games are cheap too. I really love X Files!

This is a really fun game, with some flaws.

I was hesitant to buy this, as my first pinball mind you, because there seems to be a lot of hate for the machine. I think it's too hard for some, but as an owner, I must say it's really a good game and I would recommend it, to those looking for a more difficult play.

The ramp shots are incredibly difficult until you master them, and completing the different 'X Files' within the pin are also tricky. But I see this as a good thing because you wouldn't want a game that is too easy, you'd get bored!

The theme is amazing, and I love the art throughout the machine. Everything from the black glass to the play-field to the Dot matrix animations are really slick and well done!

The sound is good, but not great. The voices are especially poor quality, but the X files theme is pretty good and that's what you want to hear if you're a fan of the show.

There are 3+ different modes for multiball and the moving file cabinet is a great toy. Along with the trap door, this game has lots to do.

Pros:
File Cabinet is a cool toy
Art is good
X Files theme music is great

Cons:
Frustrating
Sounds are lack luster at best
It is a difficult game to master

All in all, I used to recommend this game, but now I might second think that... it got really old after awhile and was more frustrating than initially thought. You might get it at a good price because it's so underrated!

Hard to believe this game ranks as low as it does. Especially since the theme is geared towards nerdy pinball players like myself. The show is tied in nicely with the game as favorite characters are a big part of the game. Gamefield is fun to play, not challenging but still alot of fun. Good modes that tie into classic episodes.

Also, mini mode of "tooms" is awesome. Never have seen that before or since.

The truth multiball is fun, better than the filing case multiball in my opinion. Overall great game, if it had better sound it would be a 10.

I've owned The X-Files now for around 2 months and I have to admit it is not for the faint of heart. When you first play it, the machine feels simple and maybe even a little boring, but the more games you stack the more it challenges you. Hell it took me 2 weeks to break the default leader board on my own machine (Set file cabinet MB to Hard rest to medium)

Great Pin! Great teaching tool, because you need to be exact with every flip, but does not drain as easily as most. When you start to master the ramps the pin flows wonderfully.

Right now, I dont think I will ever get to blood mode, but the challenge is what keeps bringing me back.

Underrated, smooth ramp shots, pop up target. The filing cabinet is a nice toy.

Highly underrated. I've never seen the show but wow is this game good. It's all about multiball here and the layout makes for great flow and frantic action. The magnet on the file cabinet was ahead of its time. Flings the ball like Iron Man but it can also hold a ball at low power right in front of the file cabinet so that you have to hit the ball into the cabinet with another ball! Audio is amazing and theme is trippy and awesome to someone like me who hasn't seen the show.

I think this is a very underrated game. It has a ton of depth, many ways to start multiball, and many modes. So there are many ways one can go about trying to get a good score. The shots are varied and tough to make.. the ramps might be a bit too tough.
Being a fan of the show I think the artwork and gameplay is great. The sound is a bit suspect but I had a new sound ROM and new speakers put in and that seems to clean it up a bit.
It does lack in playfield toys. i think the alien baby and the flukeman look neat but they don't do anything. Maybe just a bit extra lighting for the alien might have really help. The file cabinet is cool and the trapdoor to the basement is neat and very easy to hit.
11/12/13 Edit: I had to lower the lastability. The game was fun at first but eventually just sat there and was never played. The ramps are just a killer.

What a hidden gem this one is. I really like this game and like others have said, it has hidden depth.
My only real complaint is that the play field is a little dark.

It's a great game, people should stop being such snobs about it and go out and play it. (There is one on location in Edinburgh, Scotland).

X-Files is one of the very few games on location in my area that usually works...the problem is, is that it's not a lot of fun to play. Shots are easy, and, it just really isn't that thrilling. I don't think it's as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, but there's definitely something to be desired with this pin.

I'm not sure if someone who isn't a fan of the show would understand anything that's happening in this game. Luckily, I was a fan of the show, which means I probably rate this one higher than most -- but I can certainly recognize its flaws, which are many. The worst sin it commits: The two ramps are way too hard to hit. It's almost as if they botched the measurements on the playfield or something.
