The artwork is phenomenal on this game. Right up there with the best artwork of all time in pinball. The theme of apocalyptic destruction of the entire solar system, with the heroic characters on the backglass, and the skeletons drinking blood on the playfield, and the occult text in fine print around the edges of the scoreboard cutouts, makes this game stunning to look at. The rest of the game is firewood though. Stupid simple rules that should have been an EM. The artist did all he could do with it, even turning the bonus lamps into "burning planets", but there's just no meat on this game. Hit 9 different rollovers/targets to complete the 9 lights in the middle... that's it, you're done, now go find another game to play.

Great colors, playfield art, and great backglass but this game is a real stinker but if you are a early Bally collector this game is a must just to look at and not play.

The artwork is beautiful, both on the backglass and the playing field. Nothing special about the game play.

An average player, it’s the artwork that really makes this game pop and one to own. Dave Christensen at the height of his powers with a truly over the top artwork package. The gameplay focuses on two strategies, getting the spinners lit for 1000 and shooting them over and over and collecting all the planets to build bonus. It can be fairly difficult to collect all the planets, unless you’re really good at Shatzing the inlanes. The sounds are classic late 70’s Bally, if you played in the arcades then, you’ll remember them well. While I probably wouldn’t look to have this in a small collection, if you have a large collection or are a Pinball art fan, it’s one to consider.

Not sure why all the hate for the gameplay on Voltan. Sure, it's a simple layout, but acquiring all the target items is still reasonably challenging, and the spinner shots flow well and are very satisfying, especially when taking a break from a modern stop-and-go style game. Make sure the pop bumpers are tuned up and energetic, set the back legs high to make it steep, and it's plenty high-speed fun in a classic old-school pinball way. This is the only game I have that has these particular electronic sounds (like old video game bleeps) so they are also a nifty change of pace. The electronic chimes are most certainly not good, and I can't imagine anyone using that setting. The art, of course, is beyond compare.

There is a reason only 365 of these were made. Artwork is incredible, the game design is an absolute joke. Very little to this game.

The artwork, the back glass and the theme a 10. Christensen a mad genius.
The game itself a 3, possibly 3 and a half. Shame. I would however buy the game for the artwork. Amazing stuff

Fantastic beautiful artwork package.
Boring gameplay.
Game would have been better served if it had chimes, instead of cheap electronic sounds.
Very rare.

Voltan is the product of Dave Christensen doing an AMAZINGLY FANTASTIC job with a bland and boring playfield deisgned by George Christian.

The Good:
The Art. Take a look at Gene Cunningham's book for the bare breasted babe in the proto artwork for the BG. The printers that laid out BG's for Bally printed more BG's than games were made because it was that cool.

The Bad:
A bland sounding and playing table. Standard issue Bally play, but completely lackluster rules and action. Note, this game was made just after Dolly Parton and Eight Ball. Talk about hit and miss designs.

The Takeaway:
Grab an extra BG for your wall and if you can find a PF... get one of those too...for the artwork. Otherwise, this is a parts game.
