I played this for the first time at Pincinnati 2023, and it was an instant favorite. I kept returning to it throughout the day because it just had a fun feel to it, and while I didn't know the ruleset I DID know to hit the basket then ramp to get a multiball. By the end of the day, it ranked in my personal top 3 machines there! I enjoyed it so much I decided to make the plunge and become a pinball machine owner, buying that machine as my first ever!

Its been a few months and I still really enjoy the game, playing at least a game almost every day. Of course now I know the ruleset by heart and know exactly what to do to score high points, and I've found it to be even more fun with that knowledge. My wife and I are both glad we got it, and my friends have all enjoyed it a ton as well. Highly recommend people give it a shot if you see it out and about!

Hot take, I think this is the superior game compared to NBA Fastbreak. The ruleset is deep with multiple modes, multiballs, and wizard modes. In addition the modes are stackable and the game rewards you for doing so. The basketball hoop mech is a satisfying shot to hit. Unfortunately the scoring is unbalanced, which can lead to boring tournament play. If this game had a ChadH style code update it would be fantastic. I plan on picking this game up some day.

Its a bit underrated but I can see why but it is not that bad to go to last 20 although 1 of the most annoying things I find is the plastic cover it just affects my gameplay if you don't clean it usually you just cant see the inside which is a bit annoying and the back glass and cabinet is decent but not that good still a bit underrated for a 95 Gottlieb game because there are worse ones made by Gottlieb in that time

Shaq a big man.

(September 25, 2023)

Wow. Talk about a DEEP game! The rules are insane.
People don’t give it a chance. Shaq Attaq has a lot to love and is packed with features. Jon Norris himself explains the best way to play it for big points.

There weren't many basketball themed pinball machines, so if you need one in your collection this is the one you want. I have owned it for years and it just never gets old. I do have a larger collection and I think the game is good for that. The upper playfield requires finesse to hit the vuk and timing to hit the drop targets. The moving basket is an awesome mech that I think solidifies this as the best basketball themed machine. There are interesting modes with the drop targets and Shaq has the ability to drop them to set up certain shots. It's always challenging to collect the hidden features in this game. Multiball is easy to get, and there are multiple wizard modes, one of them being a single ball wizard mode, which I like. Is the scoring unbalanced? Yes. But I'll bet as soon as someone decides to start doing some code re-writes to these Gottlieb system 3s, like others have with the old Williams and Data East games, a lot of people are going to start looking at these Gottliebs aain.

This game is very underrated. It's nowhere near the best pinball game but it certainly does not belong in the bottom 15 of pinside's list. In my collection of four pins, this game has lasted the longest and still gets played quite a bit. I can still see myself keeping it for many more years.

The bad:
The callouts are bland and repetitive. Even though it is possible to set the amount of callouts to "low" they are still heard very often.
The music is boring and gets repetitive as well.
The scoring is unbalanced. Super jackpots can award insane amounts of points if you can collect them consistently, while some modes award much less.
For a skilled pinball player, this game can be very easy and grow repetitive.
The game hands out extra balls like candy, and it can be difficult for the player to lose the game sometimes.
When stacking multiple modes, there is often not enough time to complete them all.
The ruleset is can be difficult to figure out, so it can be difficult to optimize your score unless you read the rulebook.

The good:
The backglass art is something that I feel is underappreciated. While the oversized Shaq isn't very appealing, the constant camera flashes from the crowd is a real eyecatcher.
The art on the playfield and cabinet look alright, though they are nothing special.
The flashing lightshow on the playfield is bright and looks great.
The individual modes are good, and stacking them with multiball is very fun.
The game has amazing flow. This is something Shaq Attaq does not get enough credit for. There are very few times in the game when the ball stops moving (The ball mainly stops when a mode starts), and the big orbit shot feels both smooth and fast.
The ruleset is fun and deep once you understand it, and achieving all the hidden features feels VERY rewarding.
The moving net is a fantastic toy, and it feels amazing when you make a basket.
Multiball is fun, and can be achieved very easily.
This game is friendly to both new and experienced players, and mine often gets used more by guests than any of the others in my collection.

Overall, Shaq Attaq is a very underappreciated game that new players and experienced players can appreciate. It is an excellent beginner pinball, but can still hold up in larger collections. While many Gottlieb games of this time often receive heavy criticism, Shaq is a game that has been dragged down by its peers. There is more I can say about the game but this review is long enough already. I don't know if this game will stay with me forever, but I also can't see myself selling it anytime soon.

TL:DR
Underrated game, would recommend

Big shaq fan so theme is good.. Fun game for the price. Multi ball could be better. Scoring is never consistent.

Good budget game. Some fun shots with the basket, spinner and drop targets at the top. Music is generic/boring. The call outs are repetitive. The backglass is odd. Really weird scoring/rules. It's alright but does get old after a few games. The playfield isn't bad and with a better rule set and more balanced scoring, it would have been a much better game. Not a bad game to have if you're looking for a cheap DMD game... just you'll want to upgrade soon.

Heard awful things about this game going into it so my expectations were low. I was pleasantly surprised though. Nothing much to look at but it's actually pretty fun. It's like NBA Fastbreak but with a constantly moving hoop. I thought It was one of the more fun "lower rated" games.

shooting the basket shot is the only real gimmick on this game but I still take pleasure in playing this one whenever I see it , don't care for the theme at all but was surprised by how much fun it can be

First feature I noticed , before I even started to play the game, when you play with the flipper buttons the DMD board starts scrolling through the game instructions, wow I really love this & wish all games had this feature! very clever Gottlieb
In the center of the play field is a moving basket ball hoop that just dares you to try & shoot the ball through it, one of those shoots you never get sick of seeing, which has a separate score board of it's own, the baskets you score can be traded, when shooting your ball in a particular ball lock, the game options start flowing, will you take the points or more features that can lead to huge points if you are accurate with the flippers.
This game offers hours & hours of Fun!! & at a affordable price, very under rated, a hidden jewel.

Shaq Attaq is one the first pinballs I've owned and while i'd love to like it I don't.
Rules are not easy to get. I've found myself doing great and not got rewarded... to the opposite without understanding why got a nice score with poor playing.
Apart from the light show (and attract mode) the overall style is poor.
The upper playfield feels weak and not interesting.
Scores seems unbalanced and unrelated to skill shots.
I understand that I've missed something along the way but one thing is for sure, that pinball needs a lot of love and perseverance to be loved and i don't have it.

You know, what, I like this game. Is it repetitive, yes. Is the art a tad bad... yup. Does it throw out extra balls constantly? Absolutely. But, it carries the theme well, it’s fast paced like a basketball game. Has a really fun light show that keeps you excited. And for a Gottlieb... actually pretty impressive.

Shaq Attaq is a fun, light game. Its easy for new players to learn, and seems to be a favorite for new guests to gravitate towards. It has an easy multiball to achieve, and is a fun pin for both young and older players. The basketball hoop shot is a fun gimmick too. If you play Shaq Attaq expecting a deep ruleset and lots to shoot for, you will be disappointed. But if you take it for what it is, which is a fun, basic pinball machine with 90s cheesy-ness, you will have a solid time.

I have owned this game for a couple of weeks. I have enjoyed it and as most have noted, once all the parts work as advertised its a fun game with good flow. I don't really like the music. Coulda been a lil more exciting or close to the mainstay game music you hear at actual games and the callouts by the coach and woman are repetitive. Besides that its a great game. I enjoy the basketball theme. the spinning free throw line along with the moving basket are both excellent ideas. I also really enjoy the design of the spinner. The vari target is a flawed design that requires constant tweaking. its the same as the one in my gottlieb genesis. not my fave part.

My god this game is a joke! “YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH” “SHOOT THE SPINNER SHOOT THE SPINNER SHOOT THE SPINNER”. I’m like “SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP”. The basketball hoop actually is “neat” (that’s an overstatement). I mean come on!

No no no, I may be bias becuase I'm not a basketball fan . If you like someone shouting at you you'll love this game. They stop play to select extra points or free throw or something else using your flippers. I just want to play pinball. You can shoot a moving hoop with the use of a ramp . I still have this one but will be trading it soon. For a 1995 game you would expect more likable game play.

Pretty boring pin. Played it for way too long cause my ball wouldnt drain and in the about 20 minutes I was playing it I only hit the basket once. The theme is basically a joke theme and the layout is weird witht he upper playfield having just about nothing to shoot for it seems like. Not a fan of gottliebs of this era and this is a great example why.

We really enjoyed this when we bought it and got several years of enjoyment out of it. It's a great game for people that are new to pinball, with lots going on and plenty of fast action. The flow is good, and multiball is fun. However, multiball is a bit too easy to achieve, and usually just happens by accident. Over time, the sounds become tiresome, and the variabilty of game play limited. It has good flow, and its always fun shooting baskets!

Another letdown from the once great pinball manufacturer Gottlieb. While I'd take this game over Freddy any day, it's still just a poor design with a license attached to it, rushed to market. The layout is awful, the art atrocious, and it plays like Mariah Carey on New Years Eve. What should be a really unique, fun approach to pinball (like Gomez's "NBA" game), just falls completely flat. Bummer.

This is an awesome game for the money. If you are looking for a reasonably priced machine these can usually be found in good condition for under $1000. This machine has some great gimmicks. A moving basket that you are trying to put the ball through, 4 flippers, ramps, drop targets, DMD display, 3 ball multiball and basketball. Great game for pinball parties. Kids and beginners love it. Still fun for experts.
