Played at Pinball Republic in Croydon, London. Like many Zacs, this has colourful playfield artwork (the cabinet art is terrible) and a big gimmick (pop-up robots).

Unfortunately, also like many of the Zacs I’ve played, the whole is somehow less than the sum of its parts and it feels strangely forgettable compared to other pins of its era (e.g. Laser Cue, Space Shuttle).

I just picked one of these up (on the strength of theme and gadgets) having never played it before other than on the computer. I really like it; the playfield art is brilliant and vibrant. I thought the cabinet art seemed a bit dull in pictures, and though the colour pallet is at odds with the playfield, it does also have charm and looks good. The main goal is to get it over the robot bridge and then play whack-a-mole with the 5 robot troll-like targets. These are awesome. However its sensible to go for the long shots up the top to get the lanes rolled over and light an escape on the outlanes. 5 drop targets on the right also good to get the 'orange special'. Sound is like nothing else, so very unique and works well with the theme if a bit dingy. The lights look great, and there is a nice flashing off the pop bumpers at times and fade effect with the bonus as it lights up. Only the one ball, nudging is important to keep it in play. Rules are quite basic, but it's certainly good fun. At first I kinda wished the roll over lanes were selectable, and some have mentioned it'd be nice to have a third flipper up the top instead of a slingshot. Though as is, it all helps you develop some nudging skills and it keeps the ball coming back down to the lower playfield making for a challenging game. Bright backglass with a tube behind the robot lettering, so maybe some anti-reflective glass would be a nice addition. Overall, a great game... Top score I have is 6 mil at the moment; the counters go up to 99mil before rolling it(?!)

Robot is an awesome game! Who doesn't like evil robots from space? The theme is excellent and works very well with the "computer" voice callouts, weird space/sci-fi sounds and amazing artwork.
In general, Zaccaria did amazing things with art: Screen printed cabinets with amazing details not achievable with stencils, Printed thermoformed 3D art for the back box + art on the glass + neon in some examples, And amazing artwork on the playfield.
Playfields, by the way, held up very well due to the coatings used at the time.

Robot's rules and shots are straightforward and fun: Orange special advanced by drop targets for extra ball (or whatever you set it to). Red special is advanced by going up the bridge, raising the robot heads and hitting down; scores superbonus (or whatever it's set to) when completed. There is also a "timed special" (which is like a hurry up shot) lit when the drop target bank is completed. Robot also has a "ball save" when you complete the upper rollover lanes.

Robot and Zac's in general are rare in the US, so finding parts with art on them or game specific parts are near impossible. There are repro circuit boards and displays available, BGresto can make glasses and some parts can be substituted with US machines of similar era.

If you ever see one at a show, make sure to give it a try. You probably won't get another chance.

I absolutely hate this game. Its as fun as playing ping pong off of someone's face. Totally disappointing ball returns. The sound sounds like the battery is dying. Typically beautiful Zaccariah backglass and awesome pop up toys. The cabinet artwork detail had potential, but it seems like they gave up on color variation and it ended up dreary and left wanting.

Definitely a fun game for a number of go-rounds, enjoyed playing it at VFW Pinball. The playfield art is wonderfully eye-popping. The backglass actually seems reminiscent of the Dr. Who serial "Robot", the first with Tom Baker. Besides the other criticisms here, I would add that the robot ramp, while colorful, would be better as a wireform or transparent, as it obscures the playfield a bit, and particularly the targets at the right.

Love the color scheme on the glass and especially the playfield. Very easy to pick up and play

I love robot. Unique robot head toys. Great layout. Overall just fun. Only second to Zankor.

Weak points? It's a Zaccaria and not overly reliable. Robot seems to have a bit of character. I like it.

If you like pop-up trolls and can't afford an MM, try this alternative. You won't get 2 but 5 !!
Ok, they are not trolls but you get the idea. Another good zaccaria table. Doing the ramp to lift these targets is fun.

The main drawback of this table is the upper right PF, with the standup targets. There is no skill shot (?). What seems to be missing is a third flipper in that area (say, Embryon-like). Replace the stand ups by drop targets and you would get an awesome game. Bonus multiplier is too high and is often obtained randomly

Robot is a game that I played on the far wall at the PAPA facility. It took me a while to tear myself away from it once I figured out how to work with the ramp/ robot proto-trolls.

The Pros:
Robot Bridge to dropping the 5 cylindrical targets, and again, and again and it never gets old! Zaccaria games have the most vibrant art packages out there. The action at the top of the PF is lively and the shot selection all over the layout is well thought out. The clyindrical robo-trolls can be taken down with indirect glancing hits. This creates interesting angles and ball shots when the targets are up. That Robot Bridge shot is TIGHT!

The Cons:
Finding one for sale. Finding parts (ugh) for this game when things break down... The BG is muddy and looks amateurish as compared to the bright and vibrant art package of the rest of the game. Must keep eyes on the PF! That and it looks like it was (poorly) inspired by the album artwork for the Queen album "News of the World". 20x-40x-80x from the upper standups that have to be reflected on from the upper sling/pops? Bonus heavy by chance is an understatement. That one aspect of gameplay alone makes this pin un-tourney worthy.

The Takeaway:
A great pinball experience from those wacky Eye-Talians. IF you are looking for something different and fun. This game may be just what you need. Check out the gameplay here: http://pinball.org/videos/gameplay-videos/robot/
