I used to have this, and I do miss it.

I think of Playboy when I think of classic Bally games from the early solid state era: easy to learn, straight-forward goals, flashy artwork and a fantastic licenced theme. The art package on the game is easily in the top five of the era, with the edgy Bally artwork blowing away the cartoon corny-ness of the Gottlieb art packages of the same time. The pink and black that dominates the palate are presented in a visually pleasing way. I'm sure this theme would have drawn one or two adolescent boys to it back in the day, but is very tame by today's standards. The right orbit grotto shot through the pop bumpers feels so good when you make it, and not many shots like that exist in pinball from this era (that don't involve a spinner). Playboy comes out near the top of the heap for games released in the late-70s and early-80s.

I think the game play matches the theme really well.
Its fun to roll over the score on this one!

It played all right but I got tired of it quickly.

Classic early solid state Bally, 10x better than the terrible Stern release in the early 00's. Artwork is tasteful but also the game is enjoyable.

I had a chance to play this at a local pinball shop. I think it needs a bit of cleaning and a good wax, but having never played it before, I was kind of disappointed that it played so slowly. Maybe it was set less than 5 degrees. Either way, I had a pretty good game on it and made my first ball last a VERY long time and when my after drain bonus kicked in and the melody played for a great long while, even the owner of the place walked by and said 'Wow, nice bonus!'. Of course, the next two balls drained pretty quickly, but I still scored close to 800k points and won three credits during game play and took High Score to date! While it wasn't a super fun game, I thought it was cool overall and I grew up looking at my dad's Playboy's from the era, so the theme was perfect to me. If I found one cheap, I might pick one up for my collection.

Finally got the opportunity to play this classic machine at the Pinball Expo Sydney Nov 2014. It certainly looks the part and captures the cult of the era. Backglass & playfield are well synchronised & serve the theme-hot women. Now if only the gameplay matched the theme we would have a winner. Whilst the machine I plaued lacked tuning there are limited shots and drains are plentiful. Not a keeper.

The first game I remember getting me into pinball. A classic.

This is a really fun game. Played it at Lyons and won in a tournament on it. Nudging is the order of the day... getting the ball into the bonus collect on the upper left seems to award a lot of points after the ball has drained. Keep the ball near the upper playfield and you'll score well. Backglass isn't bad to look at either.

Got one of these in the condition several pinsiders mentioned was typical. Playfield to the wood, sunken inserts, dirty, a few lamps working here and there… But the backglass was in pristine condition and the cabinet had no wood rot so I decided to try my hand at a full cabinet & playfield restoration. It turned out beautifully. New decal and hard coat on the playfield along with stenciled paint job on the cabinet made the thing look brand new (only better). Some strategically placed pink LEDs and an ABS coated pink pinball to top it off. That pinball made the thing lightning fast (actually faster than many of the 90's games with 50v solenoids).

Although the play isn't real deep from that era, there is clearly some strategy you need to apply to gather the keys then get into the grotto. OK, it's not really all that different than picking up hitchhikers to get into the magnetic playfield, just simpler. Balls drain pretty fast with those wide expanses for drain lanes. Thank goodness they relented a bit on that with the later games. All in all, I found this game delivered way more fun than I ever expected of it. Is it a keeper? If you like that era and theme - probably. I only have so much room and I had to get some space for Fish Tales so it's gone now. I'll miss it a little but not enough to try to get another one.

The best looking playboy with some interesting features and play. A classic because of the theme but still fun to play.

This game is really very poor. When it came out men would flock to it in the dark seedy arcades of central London, but pinball players including me soon tired. I played this game in a brand new perfect condition and it was very disappointing back then, the ones I have played since have been awful. Everything seems to be placed badly on the playfield. Never liked the artwork, nor the game play.

It may be hard to find this pin in good condition. If you do, enjoy ! This machine is iconic - so much better than the other playboy versions we know. Getting to the grotto via the right orbit shot is extremely satisfying. The music is cool... especially when counting a very high bonus. What to add? Ah...the artwork: Theses girls were sexy in the 70'... and are still now !

Picked up two as restoration projects and I am absolutely keeping one of them. Great early SS Bally pin. I dare you to find a cooler, better themed backglass. Could Heff look like a bigger pimp?

The sound is also pretty damn good considering it is 1978. Great tune as you drop a quarter.

Cabinet is nice, themes in girls and pinball throughout the playfield quite well. Really needs some pink LED's to get to a truly awesome state.

Playing it is ok, not good, not bad....pretty much exactly like every other early SS pinball game...if you like the theme, you will like the playing of the game.

Classic Bally early SS pinball. Hugh is a happy dude. Even Grandma looks like she is having a blast in the grotto. This pinball table looks great in pink. Maybe even better than the Dolly Parton pinball game does.

Pros:
Uh... it's Playboy pinball. Build up your bonus and hit the grotto. Shotting from the right orbit to the grotto is always a very satisfying shot. Granny Mc Fanny in the grotto with her arms behind her head...classic!

Cons:
Hard to find a game that was not worn to the wood due to heavy play. Yeah... I said wood.

Takeaway:
Classic Bally pinball in so many ways. Get to the grotto. Oh yeah... The only thing better is a Sexy Girl.

Classic table from early Bally. Game theme has lasted although play is repetitive. A great pin in a collection or lineup. It always gets play no matter who is in the gameroom.

Playboy -like many other early Bally SS-games- leaves a lot to wish for in its gameplay. Still, it's a classic and sought after game. Why?

Playboy's strength is that it is a great looker. Bold. Pink. In your face. But stylish at the same time. A beautiful mirrored backglass, nice playfield and a nice cabinet. If unfaded, that is. Playboy is an example of a licensed theme done very well. Like many sex-related things in the 70's, it does breathe some kind of sleazy vibe...

...but isn't that what we love that decade for?

This game should have been cool and made the boys drool! Instead (and this was the anything goes 70's), the backglass was not that sexy and provacative. The game play wasn't that exciting and it was one of those horrible 70's games that added LED numbering and synthetic sound because everyone thought it looked cooler, but it really stripped away character (and that is with respect to a lot of those late 70's games.

This is a game I checked out because of the Playboy association, but it's rather boring to play.

This is a decent 70's game, good flow and an easy game for beginners to play.

Classic backglass and theme. The perfect mancave pinball if your a bachelor. There are some variety with the shots but it's a variation on other Bally's of the era.

The gameplay is very limited, but the artwork almost makes up for it ;-)

Great game, with a nice simplistic game play. Hard to compare it to the more modern 'Bells and whistles'

Well worth a look as a secondary machine. Although the price is high it's not likely to go down making it a good investment.
