I totally got this game for the artwork. Along with Paragon and Gorgar, I think this is one of the best fantasy themed pinball games ever made. I love the playfield and backglass. I think this game shoots well (it feels wide open) and has decent rules for a game of this era. Drop shots galore. I will admit that compared to another system 80 game like Black Hole, it does not hold up well in the gameplay department. I find this game quick to pick up and play but I can see what some might find it limited.

Plays pretty well for a widebody game, and with LED's it lights up very nicely. I really like the sexy fantasy art package, but as with all art it is subjective and relative to peronal preference. Fairly simple 1980 offering but after a year of ownership, it is still enjoyable to play. With serviced boards, the game is reliable. The backglasses are subject to deterioration in the reds, would be nice to see a prime vendor like CPR pick this up and add it to their reproduction offerings. Mechanical components and overall game build are high quality, carried over from Gottliebs EM era a few years earlier. Unless production figures are wrong, where have all of the Pantheras gone? Parted and disposed of? Also, finding one that is not in rough, beat down condition is not easy.

Pretty simple rules. Basic sounds, sexy theme, great game to learn shots.
Fun over all

Panthera is a great System 80 game, as well as one of the best Gottlieb Widebody’s in my eyes.

Pro’s:
Game fully utilizes it’s size, and features an incredibly unique shot layout.

Ruleset featuring colored shots, and how it relates to bonus is well done.

Utilization of alley passing without breaking the game is well done.

Art is well done (particularly on the playfield).

Con’s:
Sound is pretty terrible if I’ll be honest.

Overall, a really fun widebody System 80! Wish they made more, and I wish people appreciated this game to a similar extent as Gottlieb Spider-Man and Black Hole.

Just picked up Panthera a few days ago. I’m a fan of drop targets so this one gets a thumbs up. Really nice art package, spinner to rip, several ways to achieve an extra ball, and very well lit up Playfield. Not for everyone being a wide body. The slingshots really get the game playing quicker especially with the game raked up. So far I like what I see.

Given there were over 5000 made I'm not sure why this is so rare these days, but regardless, this sexy and silly pin is pretty middle of the road for the era. A big, bold widebody with hippy-fantasy cheesecake art and a beautiful glittery cabinet, unfortunately the playfield isn't nearly as interesting. A couple sets of drops, one spinner, rollovers -- a very standard layout, spiced up a little by the fact the drops and rollovers are linked by colors. Complete one color, increase your multiplier. Love the early digital sounds, that mock panther roar gets me smilin'.

Don't really understand the low ratings on this machine. I've had the opportunity to play it quuite a bit as a good friend owns it.

Decent rules, and really great shots make this stand out for me. Love the art.

Very challenging machine, and a blast for mini tournaments, as the bonus is where it is at; and you really do not see too many of these around.

Disclamer, as ALWAYS, set up sometimes makes all the difference.

Never judge a pinball by its art. It has a pretty playfield, cool looking backglass, nice bumper caps, but it is boring to play.

Lots of better games from this era but I got it cheap.

Played this at the Asheville, NC pinball museum and it was worth a few plays. Artwork is awesome. Game play was a bit on the slow side, but still enjoyable.

It is a drop target shooters game with memory drops to boot. Nice sexy art. Crappy background sounds but that was the early years, so anything was better than nothing i guess. Still fun but most are.

Panthera should have been a good game.

The Pros:
An ingenious color schemed scoring system in this game means that every shot to the top counts. The spinner is satisfying and there are drop targets all over this deck. Doug Watson did a great job with the BG and the PF, even the cabinet on this table is tip-top. This game sounds pretty good!

The Cons:
With all this deck has going for it... where is the game? Rules and scoring are out of whack with gameplay and considering what Bally and Williams were doing in 1980, unacceptable. Considering Gottlieb is the king of drops, this game should have shined.

The Takeaway:
This game is slow, and boring. Who is Allen Edwall? Master K where are you?!?

Panthera is quite the vixen!

I think the playfield art is beautiful. The art fills up the widebody very well. Unfortunately, the widebody is NOT filled up by many interesting things to shoot at.

The objective of the game is to put out all of the rollover colors. Once a rollover is hit, that same color lights up in front of each corresponding drop target. Hit the lit drop target for a bonus increase and points. Hit all three of that color and increase your multiplier. The best scores come when you've got all 4 rollover colors hit and you've hit each drop target.

The game remembers which colors you've hit and the colors don't reset until you've completed EACH set of drop targets, very very cool feature.

With a good game, it's easy to roll this game over (6 digit display). But she can be very frustrating!

It's a fun game to try and roll over, that goal is what gives her any sort of lasting appeal. Other than that, it's just an OK game.
