This is one tough game. So tough I know people who have not kept it in their collection very long. But for a experienced player, it can offer lots of challenge. For a novice player, it will just piss you off. Nice callouts, nice ramps and many toys add to the game.

Just the same average game as the original Iron Man

Good game, but number one, no way.

I own an IMVE and I am a huge fan of the 1st movie so this pin is a dream theme to me. I love the art (both backglass and side art) and think the music and call outs are really well done. Dots are a letdown but the color DMD upgrade really adds a more 'finished' feel to the game. With a shaker, sub and volume turned up, I scare the dogs and the neighbors. The game at times (many times) is brutal, fast and unforgiving but that also seems to make a good game all that more enjoyable. You can have 5 games in 10 minutes but the machine seems to call you back for just that chance to reach greatness. Addictive and fun.

Not a bad game for a quick play. But a lot of better machines out there I personally don't like the vault edition look as compared to the original cabinets and back boxes.

Iron Man is Dope on a rope. Finally got to play one, so this is a first impression review. But man, what an awesome, fun, and brutal game! I love brutal games like this, and if they're going to be fast & defensive, ultra deep rule sets aren't want you necessarily want to see. It is straight and to the point. I agree the rules are more akin to sys11 games from what I could tell, but that is my favorite era of games, so I am biased in that regard. You didn't have to play it a bazillion times to know what to do.

Game flows really well, and the layout is great, although not unique. The only thing that seems a little rinse-repeat is the bash toy. Not overly unique. But it makes sense to have it based on the theme and it was done well here.

I'm not sure I'd want to own one, given the current price of it. But I'll definitely play it if I see it. It reminded me a little of f-14 in its speed and defensiveness, only f-14 pisses me the hell off and doesn't make me want to keep playing it to come back and kick its ass.

I don't like this pin at all to say the least.

Besides the fact that I generally don't like the cheap DMD animations that are taken from movieclips, this game is too much of a drainer for me.

This game is fast and brutal. The toy in the middle that comes up that you should bash has a magnet, under the playfield. So when you hit it in 2/5 times it slings it back super hard right through the middles.
It is an important part of the action, so you need to hit it many times during your game.

For me, this makes the fun disappear within 2 minutes. My tactic is trying to hit it on the side a bit but is right in the middle and close to the flippers. This makes it very hard not to hit it in the middle.

Not my cup of tea. But if you like fast and short games this one it for you.

This is not my style of game. I prefer deep rulesets with varied shots and theme integration. I love a challenge, but I want to go on a journey when I play and be immersed, and instead this game is like walking across the street. It's is a product of the lean times at Stern. Stripped down to almost nothing and bare bones physically and rule wise. You can see the entire game in 5 minutes. Ball times are short so you find yourself repeating the same things over and over quickly game to game since there is so little variation. I would never want to own one due to price and repetitiveness and I find myself not really interested in playing it on route when there are other options. For what Stern charges for their games, I expected a lot more out of this game. Next to the Stern Indiana Jones, this is easily the most disappointing modern Stern game for me.

Iron Man is a challenging game that requires your attention and ability to control the ball at all times. This is not a game for the timid or the flailer.

The Pros: Standard issue fan layout and a few randomizers on the PF make this game look like it's going to be easy... Do not be fooled. This table will eat you up if you are not paying attention. Skill is required at all times as well as patience with your multiball technique. Do or Die lives up to it's name at the hardest shot on the table.

The Cons: Ball times can be incredibly short. I've seen kids run up to the machine and say "Cool, it's an Iron Man game!" They put in their quarters and their game is over in 45 seconds. After getting beat down a few times... they walk away dejected. The art on the BG is overly simple for my tastes. The rules are following the standard Stern ruleset pattern... Lyman... C'mon! Lane-change-anti-skill-shot is a letdown.

The Takeaway: A challenging game that needs to have a ball saver on location, not at tournaments. Some players that I respect LOVE this game. I'm watching them play this table and learning from them. I still don't "get it" yet and think that there are many other more creative and better playing games out there. Even from Stern... TSPP, LOTR, WPT, Spidey, Monopoly, RiBoN, WoF, Elvis, PotC... Or even better, grab a BSD or a Dr. Who to work your pin-fu. Am I making my point clear?

Game depth = System 11 (+1) era.

This game falls under the Fish Tales category of a great tourney game. It also is fantastic in a larger collection. I had the chance to trade for one and between this NIB game and TAF, I picked TAF. No regrets at all. Both games are great and still easy to find, but man... you really have to be in the right mood for dealing with this table. John Borg did a fantastic job with this deck design. While I am not so hot about the DemoMang-like BG, my eyes are usually on the PF. I also have to respect the shots on this table as missed shots are death. Fortunately, the kicker is not the BBH insta-death angle that we have seen from other designs, but still, stay on your toes. If the ball is ANYWHERE near the left outlane... bump it, nudge it, get it outta there! That side took great notes from ST:tnG/ DM and it will make you look silly on the regular. The rules on this game are not deep, and they do not need to be. Few games have the challenge/fun/frustration balance down like this game. Lastability is good, but you may also have to take a break from it before you throw it down the stairs out of sheer pin-fury. I like this game, but I don't love it. I hate this game, but I respect it. You'd better play well or Iron-mang is gonna play YOU!

I swear Iron Man and War Machine are mocking me behind the glass. The most brutal game I have ever played but it has made me better in every other pin I own. Nothing more satisfying getting Jericho or Do or Die.
My only complaint is with the back glass on the VE, the brushed aluminum side art looks fantastic, wish Stern would of done more with it

IMVE or IM . both are equally great. Great call by Stern to re-run these that were initially slow to catch sales.

Hated the game at first (IM and INVE) but the more I played the more I liked it. Game awards you for well placed shots and punishes for the bad ones. Big thing that needs to be changed are the requirements for Do or Die Multiball as it is unachievable by mere mortals.

Game could use a couple minor code tweaks and the dot matrix display can be almost unviewable without the color dmd upgrade.

Other than the above, this game kicks major butt. Really great playing machine that is fast and furious.

Had this game since it was re released and it never fails to deliver everything that I love about playing pinball.

I absolutely LOVE this machine. I've owned it for nearly two years and simply cannot stop playing it, partly due to it being so wickedly difficult. Games are very short; if you are expecting to go on an LOTR 45 minute quest, forget about it! It's fast, in your face, and incredibly fun; it's almost like a completely roided out System 11 in a lot of ways. Sounds are awesome, and the animations look absolutely phenomenal if you put in a ColorDMD (which you should). More than anything, though, it is just a blast to play - I'm surprised I've not worn the start button out. Simply tremendous.

Picked up a mint condition IMVE and I will probably update this over time (I do go back and update my reviews). Right now it's still fairly new but I've been playing it a ton and have a good feel for the rules and how it plays:

I've never played a game this intense. It truly does "fight back"! Make no mistake that this is probably the most difficult DMD game ever put out. BSD might come close but I find IM more difficult. If you like a serious challenge (just to keep the ball in play) and you like speed and a great light show and music then look no further. Pure adrenaline rush.

This game does require some tweaks to the settings to make it play at its least I think it does. Set Monger to "hard"! This actually makes the game a little easier since Monger tends to pop up too often otherwise and he really gets in the way of advancing the game. Set him to hard and you'll still see him plenty, but you'll also have a better chance of getting to the achievable wizard modes - DOD & Jericho! I also prefer (personal preference) to disable the back post. This makes the "skill shot" a real skill shot....very difficult. It also allows orbit shots to always come flying back at you....which I like. You still get into the "pops" on 1) the skill shot if you make it & 2) on any center spinner shot. So it's not like you don't still incorporate the pops into the game.

It's difficult but not in that frustrating just really makes you want to try again. You get soooo close only to have it all yanked away in a split second that you swear to yourself (and at the game) that you will get it next time! Good luck with that though ;).

On another note; it's a fantastic multiplayer game! No waiting for 20 minutes while someone plays their ball (cough, LOTR cough). IM is also a great "equalizer". Newer players have a real shot at beating more advanced players on any given game....and that's really fun for them.

Hard to master, fast games very rewarding shots. I love it!

Very fast game.
Brutal drains.
Tough to play.
A little repetitve in game play, but I like more of a quest based game.
It was fun for my first 20 games, but I moved on.

Fast, brutal, bright and intense, with a simple rule set that's hard to master.

Vault Edition looks stunning with all LED's.

One of Stern's best efforts, a classic for sure. Owned mine for nearly two years now.

This is such a tough game. You can play several games and not see much happen at all. On the other hand when it opens up you see the magic of Iron Man.

The rules are simple but difficult to pull off a lot like BSD. You will have lots of frustrating games but one awesome run mixed in here and there.

Killer game. Put in several games and then come back and let us know how awesome it is.

Tough pin with short ball times, but can be very rewarding. Game benefits from alternate sound code and better LED lighting with colors instead of bright white.

Classic and fun one of the best pinball out there. another hit and updated with all the goodies

I decided to add this game to my collection after playing about 2 dozen games on location. Like many have mentioned, this game can be very brutal. From the second the start button is pushed until the moment the final ball is drained, this game offers a very intense and heart pounding experience. It's one of the fastest games I've played and the ball times can be ridiculously short. The "just one more game" factor is higher on Iron Man than any other machine I've played.

The rules are easy to understand and relatively simple. While not extremely deep, the rules fit the fast nature of the game very well and there are enough strategies and ways to play this game to keep things interesting. The artwork on the cab and translite are great and hard to find any fault with, especially if you're a comic or Iron Man fan. The playfield artwork is decent, but it's the weakest part of the art package since it has that "photoshop" feel. The playfield layout is great and there are tons of satisfying and challenging shots to hit. The music is some of the best in pinball and it couldn't fit the action better. A handful of actors from the various movies do the call out's and all of them are pretty good. However, the ones done by Robert Downey Jr, are fantastic and it seems like I hear a new one almost every time I play.

All in all, this is one of the most intense and satisfying pinball machines out there. Due to the fast speeds, short ball times, and overall brutal nature of the game, it's not going to be for everybody. However, I've found that this machine is hard to beat for sheer intensity, challenge, and fun factor. I find myself playing 10 games in a row every time I turn on this machine, which usually doesn't take as much time as 2-3 games on most other machines. Iron Man a perfect compliment to my collection and it holds it's own against some of the more complex and longer playing pins.
