Great classic game. Shows its age though.

Haunted House is an impressive piece of engineering and art. Other than having a lower playfield like Black Hole it is different from anything before or after. It is really nice to look at and admire, and even fun to play a game or two, but it is slow and there didn't seem like much to shoot for once I figured out what everything did. I'm not a hater. I owned one for a long time and would own it again. I didn't even miss speech or multiball. The sounds get a bad rap sometimes but I liked them. The lighting is great. I don't think you can compare it to Black Hole even though everyone wants to. The two games are completely different. If I had to though I would give the nod to Haunted House.

What an awesome game!! Tons of fun, lots of shots. Very interesting flow on main playfield. The whole them is soo cool. I'm very happy to have this game. Backglass is one of the best. Multiball would be cool but def doesn't make me feel like I'm missing it. Trying to get the specials is a challenge. Sound is good as well and if you don't like it you can stop the background music

My friend has HH at his house and it was the first game I went for. Remember playing it at the skating rink.

This is one of my favorite games from the 1980's. Its not the best player, but it has an incredible theme and art package. If it had multiball and speech, I would rate it higher. It took me a couple of years to find a nice one. It is not leaving.

Oh boy, it was a looomg way until I got this game working. Got is years ago for a handfull of EURO , worked on it for month. Great play, very nice atmosphere ... spooky .... Great ideas to play on 3 playfields. But ... like all Gottlieb Sys80 ... if yu have only space for 10 points .. there are other machines. But ... a beauty in its days !! Wonderfull artwork on playfield and backglas.

I still have a upper playfield for sale ;-)

Easily my favorite Gottlieb System 80 game out there. Very complex playfield design, and very nice flow. Appropriately gimmicky; there are 5 ways to jump from one playfield to another, so the multi-level mechanic is really well executed. A lot of people gripe about the lack of multi-ball, but the multiple playfields add a different sort of complexity.

My former roommate had this, and in a house with 6 or so pins, this one always drew the biggest crowd and got the most play. The backglass is pretty cool-looking, too!

Love the variation on this game...tons of flippers...different "rooms" in the haunted house. Thought they could have got more of the theme tied into the artwork on the playfield. Lighting could be a little bit more theme related too. Overall a very fun game to play. I would love to own some day.

The flow of this game is great. It's a three level playfield and your ball will travel through all levels of the playfield (the ball will never lock while you play a separate ball). The sounds get a bit old at times (it's a sys80 what do you want!?) but I feel that not adding speech to HH was definitely a bad decision from a design standpoint as it would have benefited greatly. The music is catchy and pretty well done for a game from this era. The big downside of this game is it's one ball only, it's a large wide body and you will never have more than one ball at a time. The rules are good, multiple shots to aim for, and a separate display counts a bonus from playing in the lower playfield. This game has lots of white in the lighting and would look great with a few tasteful LEDs here and there.

I just love it! the game play is varied because of the 3 play fields, you don't really miss multiball. I know there is a mod, but why? ball times are pretty short but it is so cool once you get used to the 2 sets of flipper buttons. This is a great old school pinball..game play and scoring is easy to figure out but hard to put into action. The play field and cabinet are beautiful, like a good pinball should be. don't let the horror stories of sys80 machines detour you from owning one because the parts for this machine aren't that hard to get. Do the ground mod if you want...but everyone should own one of these for a while, it reminds you of why you played them as a kid.

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this pin. It is one of the games that made me want to collect pinball machines.
It has a charm about it that I've never seen in any other pinball. The artwork is amazing and always reminds me of Scooby Doo :)
It achieves something that is rare in pinball machines and that is having the feel of something else. Where some machines try to have the feel of a city street, a scene in space, a rollercoaster, etc. . . . this game really does it. You really get the feel of the floors of a haunted house. Instead of telling people to do this or that to get to the upper playfield or lower playfield, I say "upstairs" and "downstairs".
An absolute classic!

Looks great. Theme well integrated. Music/sounds fit the theme. Gameplay is just not fun for me. I just don't like widebodies.

Haunted House is a game that blew me away when I first played it in 1982/1983. It is still a great playing table. It's a monster of a game in so many ways. This game and Black Hole are the best tables Gottleib produced during this era of production.

The Pros:
The total art package screams "County Fair scare ride" and the organ sounds are in line with the theme as well. Even the green score windows fit the bill perfectly. Controlling the ball on 3 levels is always a challenge.

The Cons:
Just think about this game with 3 balls on 3 playfields at once. It boggles the mind. You'd also better do all the mods and have extra parts lying about, this game needs it.

The Takeaway:
A damn fine game that will always hold a soft spot for me in my memories of growing up playing pinball. Unlike many other games of that era, it is still a great game and always a challenge to play. pinballnews.com has some information about a multiball modification to this game. The only thing this game has been missing is on the way!

Update:
I got a chance to play a really sweet copy recently and I have to admit, this game grows on me. It is not the challenge that Black Hole is (esp. coming out of the lower PF, but the strategies of staying on the upper and lower PF for game features, bonus and points is something that will always keep you occupied and playing on your toes. The shots on this table are varied and accurate shots to the center standup/downstairs are always risky, and worth it! Biggest points seem to be from working the drops downstairs while boosting your bonus multiplier. Multiball would have been BRILLIANT on this table. i'd love to try a modded out deck with this capabilities. There are so many things this deck gets right. The sound/music, the art pax, the crazy shots and the drop that takes the ball from the 3rd level PF and drops it into the inverted basement, and... 8 frikkin flippers! This game is a true player that cbe nastified to the point of being just brutal. Find one in tip-top condition if you can and play the heck out of it!

Supposedly someone has figured out how to put multiball and speech into this game. I'd love to see how it works!

Update v.2:
The miraculous has happened! I got the opportunity to play a copy of this game with multiball. It's not easy to do. Only two shots are needed, one downstairs in the saucer at the top of the inverted pf and THEN a shot to the extra ball kicker lane on the lower right hand side of the main PF. Balls being released on two levels simultaneously is always a hoot and takes the difficulty/skill level on this table up another notch. Maybe not as high as Black Hole 3 ball multiball, but it's great when it happens. Thanks to Steve Johnson for modding his table and letting me play it!

Update v.3:
I got the play the multiball modded version of this game at the VFW in Ann Arbor. This game will alphanumerically tell you how to lock the ball in the basement and then lock the ball in the extra ball "well" hole. Plunge the ball carefully, send it to the upper playfield and have 3 ball multiball on 3 levels!!! 40 years after this game was put on the street... the dream is REAL! If you have the technical skill (or can pay someone who does), DO THIS! I can't think of any other game with this capability. Thank you Shaggy!

This game is a not only a playable piece of art but an iconic pinball machine for its' theme, music, artwork, and feel. For me it's about the way pinballs make me feel when I see them, hear them and play them. Haunted House is one of those games I'd never forget.
The back glass is stunning with its creepy house and lightning flashes. The colors are very cool too with the eerie glowing green in the background. The playfield has a sort of old feel to it as a spooky haunted house would have in the vein of the Haunted Mansion at Disney World or some 70's carnival spook house. The playfield has been criticized for being somewhat barren but that's just the way it is when you have a lower cellar to play on and backwards at that.
It's just a really neat game with a unique niche feel you cannot describe unless you've played it.
A collector's piece second to none.

I love pins with a lower PF and that one is no exception. Nevertheless, at the blessed time when pins ruled the planet, I always chose Blackhole first, then Haunted House. HH is perhaps more a collector's item than a player's favorite? Nice art, music. A machine that will be remembered - but would you love it now?... After playing it several times during different Pin shows, my answer is NO.

This was my first pin. I don't have a huge bias against Gottlieb games, for instance, I love Black hole, but I was never a fan of Haunted House. The game has so much going on, but at the same time, I felt that I wasn't really doing anything. The lower play field is once again the main event, but I feel Black Hole did a better job with it.

Reliabilty is a major issue with this machine. But man, what a machine. Beautiful backglass art and music, great ambience while playing. And the three levels is nifty. A fragile classic, just like any great art. But if you are going to play it often, you have to take great care of it.

Three playfields, lightning in the backglass, whats not to like?! Oh and EIGHT flippers! Personally repaired this machine for a friend and while there are some neccessary ground mods and tweaks to be made to make the game reliable. This game stands the test of time. I would NOT call this a game of skill, but rather it gives you all the bells and whistles to be over the top and fun. There really isnt any skill shots, its simply just a huge widebody cramed with three playfields to go all out crazy on. Enjoy this game every time I play it!

This was the first table I fell in love with as a kid. I used to bike two miles just to play this. The three levels, creepy atmosphere, and back glass art really hooked me. I must have spent almost one whole summer playing this table. At the time this machine was really something. My friends and I loved it.

A very hard game to rate, such a milestone in pinball history and evolution!! They really thru the kitchen sink at this one, and for the most part succeeded admirably!! Unfortunately due to cost restraints they left out 2 major items, speech and multiball., otherwise HH would have it all. I've found that most players are so lost in the 3 playfields that they have no idea how to really play the game, or what the strategies are to get a good score. It also needs to be set up and tuned properly to be really appreciated.
