I recently had the opportunity to play all five of the Gottlieb flipper series at one location. Flipper was the one I kept going back to over and over. And when one became available for purchase a couple weeks later, I jumped at it. It's a historically significant game, being the first add-a-ball, the first wedgehead, and the first game with metal side rails. It's also fun. More fun than I thought it would be. It has a unique playfield layout that is both clever and engaging. The object is to spot a card, and then to get that same card again (either by going through the lit rollover or by hitting the center target when the arrow points to the spotted card) in order to score a free ball. But the three bumpers at the very top of the playfield will deflect the ball making the rollover shots pretty difficult. There are no out lanes, which is a plus, but there are two gobble holes which can be as demonic as the rabbit on the backglass. Great sounds on this one, and a surprising amount of action. Fun and challenging.

Flipper was the first Add-A-Ball game made. Considering it's age and layout, it's an interesting table.

The Pros:
Lots of nudging at the top of the PF means that you have got to have solid plunging skills as well as a subtle hand on the game before you even touch the flippers. This game is surprisingly fast!

The Cons:
Gobble holes will gobble. Even with no outlanes, your ball times will be short. Does this game have a high tap? I remember this deck playing very slowly. There really isn't much to shoot for on this deck. Is it just me, or are the slings stronger than the flippers? The slings do a great job of putting the ball into the gobble holes. Relatively rare.

The Takeaway:
A great piece of pinball history that will be coveted by collectors. Go to the Pinball Hall of Fame and play this game. I'm going to have a few more plays before I pass final judgment, but so far, meh...
