This game is actually a lot more fun than my numeric rating would seem to indicate. I had to rate a 1 out of 6 on playfield lighting since there is none, and 1 out of 6 on backglass since there is none. These old pure mechanical games are rarely going to hit the numbers that an EM or SS will. So why is it better than a 6.7? It's fun. It's simple fun that is even more so when playing with others. The 5 Star Final had attached legs. The 5 Star Final Jr, released in 1932, was the slightly smaller countertop edition. That's the one I have, but I put legs on it. Spindly legs that allow you to nudge away to your heart's content. There's no tilt mechanism, so why not? This is where it really gets interesting because of the figure eight ball trajectory and placement of trap holes. Try to turn 1000 into 2000 with a nudge? Go for it! But not too hard or it'll pop out completely and you'll lose the 1000 points too. I'm not going to lie. My buddy and I were playing for higher stakes than just bragging rights, and talk about loud raucous excitement when the machine ends up on two legs when someone is desperate for just a couple hundred more points to take the match! Sure this machine can be skill plunged, but only to a certain extent. It's well over 50% luck. I'd say closer to 80%. But that's part of the enjoyment. Did this game redefine PM's in some groundbreaking way? No. Is it fun? Yes. Do you want to keep putting in pennies to play again and again? Yes. And if you ask me, that's what's most important.
